Hiya, I have just boarded 397002 and realised that they have changed the announcer to be a Scottish man, however on the Nova 1s (cl802) they still have the old(?) announcer. Does anyone know why this change took place and if it’s going to become permenant?

It was supposed to happen twelve months ago in Spring 2025 but it kept delayed. This is from an internal TPE staff newsletter over a year ago.

New Voices of TPE announced.

We're delighted to share that Conductors Daniel Burn and Grant Rodden have been chosen as the new voices of TransPennine Express.

You may remember that last year, we were on the hunt for a new 'voice' on board our services. Well, judges were so impressed by the enteries that it was impossible to choose just one winner. Dan, who is based in York will be the voice for the North, South and some of the Anglo-Scottish services, and Grant, based in Glasgow will be making the announcements on the Anglo-Scottish route.

You can expect to hear their on board announcements from Spring 2025. Look out for more information and an interview with the pair in our next colleague magazine, which will be sent to home addresses mid-April.

Congratulations Daniel and Grant!

The new voices are Daniel Burn who is a York based guard and and Grant Rodden who is a Glasgow based guard. So i presume that Grant Rodden is the Scottish voice that you heard.

The article says Daniel Burn will be used in the North and South and some Anglo Scottish services while Grant Rodden will be used on most Anglo Scottish services. So i presume this means that Daniel Burn is being rolled out on the 185 and 802 stock and Grant Rodden is being rolled out on the 397 stock.

The current voices used for the last six or seven years since 2019 are Neil Rudd (main announcements) and Caroline Josephs (safety announcements) but it looks like TPE are changing these. Up until 2019 they also used Kath Donald (onboard main announcements) and Angie Hunte (onboard safety announcements and station safety announcements) and Rob Radnall (station main announcements) who were also staff members.

That would explain a lot. I think I prefer the previous announcements. Caroline Joseph’s was quite good in particular. Out of all the North WCML operators I still think avanti with Emma Lintern is the best!

The new voices are being rolled out to a few units as a test phase at the moment, with full deployment following once any niggles are smoothed out

I cant stand Caroline Josephs's and Emma Lintern's announcements but each to their own. Caroline Josephs has a really flat miserable sounding voice. Emma Lintern talks in a ridiculous way like she is voicing a radio advert selling you the latest cleaning product or a cheap holiday or some other product. I am sure they are lovely people but i am not a fan of their announcement voices.

I liked the old 390 unknown female voice (she is still used on the XC 220/221 units). Justine Harris is also very good (used on LNER 800/801 units). Julie Berry is probably the best onboard voice. I wish TPE would just use Julie Berrry as her voice is widely used and she has a perfect pleasant and relaxing sounding RP voice. I also really like Ruth Michell (the old ATW/TFW onboard announcer who is sadly being phased out) and i think she is by far the best staff member voice.

I look forward to hearing what these new Daniel Burn and Grant Rodden announcements sound like. I have yet to hear them myself. Hopefully they sound good.

Heard them on 397009 a few weeks back. Only one I've heard them on so far, and I've used a fair few 397s since.

Surprised they didn't give that guy who does the Northern Class 170 announcements a gig on TPE. Sure it would sound great

The current voice on Northern 170s and all other Northern trains (David Curtis) sounds dreadful. They are extremely amateur sounding announcements. The previous voice (Peter Corley) was slightly better. But the best voice of them all was Trisha Jarman who was used from 2015 to 2023 on Northern trains. She was fantastic. She had a Northern accent and was very clear and professional sounding. She was basically the Northern accent equivalent to an RP voice. I would love to see TPE use Trisha Jarman on their trains.

Fair enough! I think Emma Lintern just sounds happy!

Without sounding negative, it wasn’t very good.

There is a new video on youtube now of the Grant Rodden announcements on the class 397 trains:

I think it just sounds a bit amateur. I am not sure why TPE keep using staff members instead of hiring a professional voiceover artists. You can tell that he is not a professional voiceover. Although at least he is better sounding than the Matt Streeton or David Curtis announcements.

Maybe because professional voice over artists dont actually work the line everyday? Plus isnt it professional if a professional in the nature of the actual day in job is doing announcements they'd probably do already?

The problem with these announcements is the way they've been done - stringing together individual words/phrases rather than recording hundreds of announcements for every stopping pattern possible etc. The cadence of the announcement is completely off and sounds so robotic.

Obviously is it realistic to ask 2/3 conductors to record every single possible stopping pattern? Not really. But you can definitely do a better job in the audio software of making it not so obviously stitched together

Well, they're not exactly going for an Oscar. They're probably doing it for local pride and to make the TPE brand feel more 'home grown'. Also probably because it's cheaper. Being real, from what it sounds like in the video, the issue isn't the person but their direction - they would need a good voice director for their lines to come across well and consistently. That sort of sounds like they threw him in a booth with a list of lines and went 'go on then'. And for what it's worth, I think Matt does a very good job.

Cost. A professional voice over will cost significantly more, both for their time and potential expenses incurred. I’d be willing to bet a staff member will be doing it in their paid time, maybe with some lunch thrown in.

Probably so. But it sounds rubbish, the old Northern voice was very Victoria Wood esque and was an excellent audio brand. Yes, audio brand, not just a voice, a whole look and feel. Most companies have one now and you would be surprised how many little jingles you remember.

Mind you if you consider how little effort has gone into GBR's look and feel so far... :(

There are many attributes that make a good 'voice artist' (professional or not) such as intonation, inflection, style (i.e. informative, authoritative), pace but often what sounds good is subjective.

I'd argue it is more likely that a trained voice artist considers and delivers to an approporiate specification for the application. Virtually all the Worldline voices (Anne, Matt, Rob etc) do not deliver these as they are not trained to do so - Matt's railway announcements (as an observation, not a criticism) are an example where you can tell he hasn't been trained as his intonation and inflections are off and he is very nasal in his delivery, regardless how much somebody likes the tone of his voice. Compare that to somebody like Phil Sayer where the intonation and inflections are nearly always spot on.

Personally, I find a trained voiceover artist usually sounds more professional, but sometimes a staff member who has had some announcing experience can be a happy medium if can keep costs down, so it's a weigh up - GWR Rodger and Wessex Trains Ruth both had some announcing experience prior to being 'computerised' which is why their style, inflection and intonation sounded OK in their original recordings, but the longer term continuity is likely to be poor when updates are needed as they may not be looking after their voices as well as a trained professional, who relies on it for an income.

These ones by Grant sound OK and of a similar quality to most non-trained Worldline voices. I think I preferred Neil's personally although they were a bit shouty. I do appreciate when TOCs make an effort in using a professional voice over artist however - e.g. I think Julie Berry or Janine Cooper-Marshall or Trisha Jarman can deliver more warmth or invoke more 'trust' or comfort in their announcements when it is needed (i.e. when things go wrong) than others who just get told to read a script in a studio without any resonance or empathy to their audience.

Maybe its me but I doubt the average commuter will care about the fine details of the onboard announcement as long as they can hear and understand it. Must be somewhat the case if its made the final cut and is onboard the trains.

Commuters won't care (commuters generally dislike the railway whatever) but the "soft product" does matter to occasional and leisure passengers.

what is the point of these changes?
They just simply look like some managers vanity project
*Managing Directors vanity project.

And the roll out has been full of issues because Directors didnt listen to people who knew better.

They should of just left the announcements alone as they were fine before and in my opinion sound a lot better.

In my opinion Dan (on the North line) speaks too fast and isn’t an improvement on the people before. Also, the way he says “Cram-ling-ton” is like he’s been told it for the first time and is trying it out.
