As per the title, what are the busiest stations where, either terminating or in each direction, an off peak service is no more than 1tph? The busiest I've found so far is Canterbury East, which had 1.1m passengers in the last report (it does well in the peaks, but all day Saturday and Sunday are no more than hourly each way). Other high ones include Stroud, with 0.655m, while nearby Kemble managed 0.445m, then there's Bridgwater just ahead with 0.487m.

While not as busy as those examples, the Marlow branch does fairly well with 360k users at Marlow, 250k at Bourne End and 100k+ at the other stops. Admittedly most of those passengers travel at peak times when it's half-hourly - Bourne End station has 126,000 interchanges which gives an idea of how many passengers to Marlow travel at peak times.

Newquay had 125k annual users with a 2-hourly service, and once the service increases to hourly usage will increase further.

Windermere has an annual patronage of ~400,000 per annum, and a broadly 1 train per hour frequency to/from this terminus.

1tph NR in each direction from Amersham, with 1.766m. However it does get many more LU Services which muddies the water. Otherwise I agree, Canterbury East is the busiest.

Skegness is another station with an annual patronage of 400,000 per annum or thereabouts, but only a 1 train per hour frequency.

Farnborough North had 483,000 entries/exits in 2024/25.

The adjacent stations, Blackwater and North Camp, both have 2tph off peak yet have fewer passengers.

The popularity of Farnborough North is due to two large colleges nearby so there is a definite college "rush hour" effect on the numbers. It's fairly quiet at other times

It's unlikely to get 2tph off peak as it has very poor road access and virtually no parking, whereas Blackwater and North Camp both have excellent road access and sizeable car parks.

It was half hourly until 2020. Various iterations. Sometimes the fast trains from Victoria would alternate between Dover and Ramsgate. The stoppers would do the same offering cross platform connections in both directions at Faversham. Some years, the fasts would split at Faversham to serve both Dover and Ramsgate, with the stoppers terminating there. In 2020, what is now the xx42 Victoria to Gillingham stopper used to run through to Dover.

Yes I certainly think Canterbury East deserves more services again, including fast ones, but it is true to say right now it's only 1tph each way off peak.

Barrow in Furness with 590k would fit and is an isolated example being quite far from large population centres.

It additionally has some nearby small places that have quite good numbers for the population of town/village.

Ulverston 290k for 12k population.
Millom 187k for 8k population.
Grange 155k for 4.3k population.
Arnside 120k for 2.3k population.

I’d suggest that for places without barriers, limited revenue protection relying on guards having time to check everyone and trains usually 2/3cars these are good numbers.

These are not very spectacular when compared with, for example, Sheringham and Cromer, which have usage at 268k and 249k respectively and populations at 7-8k.

Although I wouldn't trust those usage figures due to station grouping with tickets being sold to Farnborough North or Main.

If you multiply up Arnside and grange they are spectacular, their numbers are boosted by it bieng 1 mile by train between the two and approx. twenty by road.

Looking at the origin destination matrix about 27k are between one and the other.

I do wonder whether the "headline" figure for Canterbury East is affected by this. It includes about 150k estimated journeys to and from St Pancras, even though there are no direct trains.

Technically one would only need to change at Faversham to get to St Pancras from Canterbury East, however this would be stupid given the direct and faster service from West, so I do think that station grouping theory is possible. Even without this though, the station still has ~1m passengers, where many of them appear to be from other parts of Kent travelling to the city (Faversham is the top flow, while Sittingbourne, Dover Priory and the Medway Towns all have distinct flows).

Barnstaple (609,000)
North Berwick (566,000)
Rye (480,000)

I think Corby had 300,000 in the year before it went to 2 electric tph, and Covid would have heavily affected that year.

I’d say they’re both great examples of rural railways not, as many believe, simply carrying fresh air.

Cromer/Sheringham is the sort of branch that had it closed following Beeching - many would have said it was crazy to reopen as they do on many similar lines that failed to be saved.

Okehampton (7.9k) recorded 347,920 entries and exits, a daily average of 953.21 passengers.

In 2024/2025, Okehampton had 347,920 entries and exits, making it the 1,078th most used, out of 2,586 stations in Great Britain.

1078/2586.
It ranked 824th busiest (out of 961), with 206 scheduled services per week.

824/961
That's a daily average of 953.21 passengers starting or ending their journey here and 32.48 passengers per service, giving it the 329th (out of 1,772) passenger to service ratio.

I imagine that before HS1 opened that usage of the 2 Canterbury routes and stations was fairly even. I don't remember one station being the "main one" whereas now with HS1, West has become the dominant route to London.

Busiest station is St Annes at 148,000, followed by Lytham at 128,000, so fairly well down the list.
