Amending advance to super off-peak

Hello,

I have an advance from Dewsbury to Euston for later today, but now need to come back earlier. I booked with Trainsplit originally. Is it possible to excess this at a ticket office to a super-off peak, or is it best to rebook and refund on Trainsplit please?

You can excess that at a ticket office but it's possible you might have some difficulty with the idea that a Super Off Peak is valid to Euston, because of the higher 'route Manchester' Off Peak Single.

There will be an admin fee (technically should be called a change of journey fee).

I was under the impression that you couldn't excess a TOC specific ticket to an Any Permitted or Route Specific (basically any none TOC specific ticket). Or am I taking rubbish?

E.g. TPE only Advance ticket to TPE only Anytime ticket would be ok because it's the same route restriction on the ticket but TPE only to Any Permitted or say route via Stockport wouldn't be ok.

You can excess tto change the ticket type but you retain the TOC restriction of the original Advance ticket. There are differing views of this on the forum but this is the view of the train operators.

If done at a ticket office, as this was, the technicalities of processing should be invisible to the customer anyway. If they just pay the difference then it will look like an "excess" to them.

Original advance was £38.95 (Dewsbury to London Terminals with 16-25 railcard). The excess was £11.85 (issued as a X/S Super Off Peak (Single), and only valid with the original advance) and a £10 admin fee (which has its own ticket). Those tickets are attached below:

You can do the excess but the combined ticket (original + excess) retain the TOC restriction of the original if it had one. Though if the Advance was routed "AP <place>" as some are there is no TOC restriction so in that case the Any Permitted would act as normal.

Retailers like Trainsplit who do refund and replace offer a nice way around this issue, because you can swap between TOCs when changing Advances as a byproduct of that even though it's not strictly meant to be possible (primarily for accounting reasons - refund and reissue gets around that too).
