I am considering booking a few days in Belfast but see the hotel at Bangor is much cheaper.

As a child, I visited Bangor, Holywood & Belfast at least twice a year with my parents, as that was where we originally came from, so I know it isn't too far from Belfast. It's quite a nice ride too

It may be more economical, just to stay there and visit Belfast during the day.

My wife and I are both 60+

Bangor to Belfast ticket prices for the train are currently as follows:

£6.90 - Single
£8.30 - Off Peak Return (after 09:30)
£11.00 - Anytime Return (before 09:30)

There is also a £27.50 three day season ticket but this is only worth buying if you are travelling before 09:30 in the morning on all three days. Otherwise just buy an off peak return every day. There are no evening peak restrictions.

Just buy your ticket on the day at the station. There is no discount for buying online or in advance. Ticketing in NI is very simple and cheap compared to ours.

Free travel and discounts for 60+ are only available for NI residents. You can not get any discount if you are GB based. But the fares are still very cheap.

There is also a Bangor to Belfast bus (routes 1 and 2 are the numbers) which is slightly cheaper:

£4.50 - Single
£7.20 - Return

It is slower than the train (about 50-60 minutes on the bus compared to 20-30 minutes on the train) but saves a bit of money.

As you say, it's a lovely train ride.

I really like Bangor. I have family out there.

You can also use the return leg of an Ulsterbus return ticket on the train (and vice versa), without payment of any difference in fare, after 6:30pm every day.

Hi,
The simplest option is to get a Zone2 iLink card:
https://www.translink.co.uk/tickets/travelcards/ilink

These are £11 per day per person and it covers you for all the trains & buses in Bangor and Belfast. You can use it for a simple return journey or for many trips during the day.
I use this each day I travel into Belfast on the train and across Belfast on the bus.

If you are considering the Premier Inn in Bangor it's probably a decent option. It's very close to Bangor railway and bus station and easy to get to and from.

You may even see me on the trian!
Cheers,
Mr Toad

Brilliant 'Bangor-toad' thank you very much

Regarding the Premier Inn at Bangor .. are you reading my mind .. you are spot on.

As I said in my previous posting, I used to visit Bangor at last twice a year for many many years, as my granny lived there .. near Ward Park. is the big gun still there ? I often stayed though with my uncle in Holywood, as he lived opposite the pier .. it seemed more fun for a wee boy. I would even be able to take a dinghy out, as my uncle (and dad previously_ were keen members of the yacht club.

Sadly, my last trip to Bangor was for my Gran's funeral, but she did make it to 102, so not too bad really.

Gun was there when I was last there a couple of years ago. Still extant according to Google. :)
