So are the current numbers for drivers generally fine, and the drive was purely to accommodate this Sunday change proposal?

Rumours around my depot are that it is off the table.
Government don't have the cash to pay any uplift in annual wages to compensate for it. I can see this part being true. As they have managed to double the spending for ScotRail since bringing it back into public ownership. Compared to what First and Abellio cost to run the franchise.

The vast majority of drivers have been sceptical about the chances of Sundays inside the working week since the original communications in 2022. Very few people thought that Scotrail would offer a financial incentive high enough to have any chance of being acceptable to drivers.
With most depots now heading towards being above compliment, with regards to running the current service, I’m expecting a slowdown in recruitment until there’s a definitive decision made on the Sunday issue. This is probably why they’ve put everyone in the talent pool. There’ll be enough candidates ready to start at a moments notice if required, not ideal for anyone but this was always a possibility when there wasn’t a deal already agreed.
If this is the case then it should have been clearly stated on the application or even more so during the assessment process , i was told in December that a medical would follow fairly soon after passing all stages and a start date for the middle of the year was likely. Sounds like this whole process has been a waste of time & inaccurate information has been given out to candidates. If an agreement wasn't made on the sunday issue what was the rush for trainee drivers.

Seems like all we can do at the moment is sit tight. Hopefully there's some movement and good news (soon) for all that passed the assessment process and waiting for medicals.
Welcome to the public sector.
The blame lies at the door of ScotGov and Transport Scotland.
For putting the wheels in motion and then either stalling or renaging on deals/finances.

The baffling thing is they’ve just opened another recruitment process. Make it make sense!
None of it really makes any sense tbh but as the fella above says hopefully something positive comes soon. Difficult to do given the severe lack of communication & clarity .

Scotrail take a share of the blame surely for jumping the gun ? if this whole recruitment drive in hanging on the “sunday rota issue” then why not wait till an agreement is reached ? it was hardly going to be implemented overnight , an agreement then a recruitment window to allow scotrail to get drivers trained would have been the norm?

You need to remember there are over 300 drivers who can and will retire in the near future. The driver population is rapidly ageing. The problem is Scotrail don't know when these people will go so want people ready to replace them. 4 people have gone at my depot this month alone and will need replaced asap. I suspect this is why people are in the talent pool as well as the Sunday thing.
I heard a stat from a director at Scotrail that they are shedding 200 drivers a year approximately at moment due to retirement and ill health etc
LNER at some depots had until recently 40% of their drivers could have legged it next day if they wanted to
On a side note whatever amount of drivers they think they need for Sundays inside keep adding more because it won’t be enough

It was a perfectly valid point. Scotrail made a commitment in May 2022 to have Sundays as part of the working week by the December 2027 timetable change.
At this point, there has been no offer put to drivers to enable this change to be implemented and the only body capable of making that offer is the Scottish government.
Who else can be held responsible?

To make a significant change within Scotrail there are 3 "bodies" which have to authorise it. Scottish Rail Holdings, Transport Scotland and finally the Scottish Government. In he case of Sunday as part of the working week it has been passed by the first 2 and it's now down to the government to make a acceptable offer. So yes, it is entirely the government who will dictate whether it happens or not depending if they're offer is acceptable.
