Hourly on North TPE was what I expected. It's what ATN used to do on strike days. People using them will have to hope they all run as 6 car.

I'm actually a bit surprised about the others though. I would have thought they should have gone for 2 hourly Manchester Airport - Blackpool and 2 hourly Manchester Airport - Windermere (as no-one else serves Windermere and the strikes are just before a Bank Holiday weekend.)

I'm a bit surprised that they're cutting off Scarborough from York, I would have thought they would have tried to at least get one service each way on the strike days. Similarly a bit surprised that there is nothing between Hull and Leeds as it's a pain to get to Leeds without using TPE, but I guess it's not as important a market for TPE as York - Leeds is. Otherwise North TPE is as I would expect.

No one else does York - Scarborough either.
Coastliner's buses will be busy!
Why do north of Preston and Leeds - York which have plenty of alternatives and abandon Scarborough & Windermere which don't?

Probably about money. They'll make more on those services. They don't care about running a service, hence why they stuck buses on instead of running night trains for 12 months, even though the line was open.

Although they have no legal obligation to put buses on to Scarbro and Windermere because it is strike action, you think they would just from a customer service point of view. It could be possiable that the drivers/managers they have remaining dont sign those routes but to leave passengers with no other TOC alternative is a bit s**t.

Interested to see that TPE seem happy to sell me a Scarborough - York ticket from the web site for the 08:48 on Wednesday morning...

I think Preston-Bolton-Manchester needs TPE services more than Manchester-Stockport-Sheffield. EMT and Northern services certainly wouldn't be comfortable if they abandoned the latter but they'd cope better.

Manchester-Huddersfield-Leeds should be their main priority - which it is from the timetables. However, Scottish services shouldn't be a priority as there's plenty of alternative options. Maybe it's because they sell a lot of Advance tickets for Scottish services which have to be used on TPE services, so they're running the service to avoid issuing a large number of refunds.

And a fair amount of the scottish ones use freightliner drivers IIRC?

Since the're not going to be touching the airport would 9 or 12 car formations with SDO not be a possibily?

I have still been proved right by cancelling our proposed visit to Thirsk (Middlesbrough line) on Wednesday, 24th August, as no trains are running past York on either of the two strike days and the meeting has now been rescheduled to late-September.

We will most probably have a far more enjoyable day in Hereford, which we have rescheduled in its place as a social day, with lunch at The Green Dragon hotel, then sightseeing. As I said in my original posting, strike days can have their benefits to some passengers.

Incidentally, the Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service in the link shows four journeys in both directions, but Glasgow itself only has a 1911 from Carlisle service and nothing in the reverse direction.

Forgot they ran the Barton on Humber line for Northern..at least they get buses unlike everyone else. Surely cancelling Sheff to Manc and deploying that unit/crew to Scarborough-York or Leeds-Hull would make more sense.

Manchester-Thirsk is still possible on strike days by changing at York to Grand Central but only a few journey options exist in each direction.

Exactly so and you have cited the reasons that I had already checked. We just wanted to make the journey from Manchester Airport to Thirsk which you normally do without the need for a change by using the Manchester Airport to Middlesbrough service. On the strike days, it would require changing at both Manchester Piccadilly and at York. It is far more acceptable to have rescheduled the meeting as we have done and to travel first class from Manchester Airport to Thirsk without the annoyance of having to make two changes.

And they dont have SDO on the 185s, just a system which locks whole units out which works fine if you need to lock out one out of two units but not sure if you can lock out 2 of 3 etc

The trains between Leeds and Manc are the busiest corridoors for Ftpe.

Scarborough/York aren't going to see as large a passenger use as there are other trains from York, and buses to Scarborough.

The days chosen by staff to strike land on Leeds Fest, so First (as the 'official transport provider') will be wanting to get as many people as they can through on the Manchester - Leeds route.

Look at posting # 9 by jcollins who confirms that the Manchester Airport services are running to Edinburgh. There are four trains in both directions.

Some EMT drivers could possibly sign Sheffield to Scarborough via Doncaster, Leeds, York and Malton. Didn't they do this service last summer?

They do a summer only service on weekends (it might just be Saturdays) with one train each way between St Pancras and Scarborough via Sheffield and then onto the ECML at Doncaster. The rest of the year that service is capped at York. They've done that service for years however I'm not sure of what relevance that is to the TPE strike as EMT don't sign 185s and the EMT service only runs on a weekend.

Could EMT put on a temporary York to Scarborough shuttle during the strikes? Perhaps operating out of the rarely used York Platform 2 - there's normally a few spare EMT units sitting about in Derby. Even just 1 crewed Meridian could provide a once every 2hrs-ish service pattern.

What has that got to do with SDO? They aren't going to use all 4 trains in one consist

Agreed. I suspect they want the ORCATS money for York-Leeds.

Northern run 3-car trains that are not very busy (except at peak times) between York and Leeds, and XC also operate between York and Leeds.

The trains between Leeds and Manc are the busiest corridoors for Ftpe.
In general, yes, but it does really depend on the times though.

Scarborough/York aren't going to see as large a passenger use as there are other trains from York, and buses to Scarborough.
York-Scarborough can be really busy at certain times, the last time I got a train from York-Manchester (1040 I think) the number of people who alighted at York (from Scarborough/Seamer/Malton) was huge, and I would estimate to be about 10 times the number who boarded. The train would have been wedged into York, but I got a table to myself between Leeds & Manchester. So, it really does depend.

But there's a huge number of passengers they are leaving with no alternative, and that surprises me. But I think 185 has the answer as to why they have done that.

The days chosen by staff to strike land on Leeds Fest, so First (as the 'official transport provider') will be wanting to get as many people as they can through on the Manchester - Leeds route.
That may well be a good point.

I don't know what times will be busy as a result of the festival, but the 1725 and 1754 from Leeds are going to be horrendous. There area huge number of commuters from Leeds-Dewsbury/Huddersfield in addition to the usual TPE users around that time. They'd better be 6-car or there will be major problems and not everyone will be able to board!

They could.... But this is the privatised railway in the 21st century, so it won't happen. We've had too much "progress" for common sense to be applied.

Bit of a devil for places like Cleethorpes which will get NO rail service whatsoever and Grimsby which gets the limited and irregular Lincoln service to get to anywhere else. Glad I am not going home those days!

Shame EMT and NR couldnt rustle up a service to Cleethorpes and Sheffield via Gainsborough really. But never mind.

That's not an emergency timetable that's TPE's Dream Network, cutting out all the bits they don't want...

I doubt any ASLEF member would agree to that though.

Who are going to be driving these trains?
What would their regular jobs be?
Who is covering their regular duties?
If the answer to the last question is nobody then are all of those people really needed?

I'm guessing that they're now assuming that because more drivers turned on for work today than they expected the same will happen on Friday, so adding in some of the extra services now rather than waiting until Friday morning when the drivers actually turn up.

I will update this post to say that our replacement day in Hereford was really enjoyable and far better than being stuck in a meeting in Thirsk, as would have been the case today, only for the strike to change our schedule.

I will say it again.....strike days can have unforseen benefits.
