5712+5732 now Running 5M64 VSTP ECS to London Waterloo
And back in service to Guildford. Bizarre. I wonder why they didn’t just run it in service, express from Chessington North, rather than spend 5 mins or so turfing everybody off?

Likely a fault that required the train to be taken out of service, but was then able subsequently to be rectified by fitters at Waterloo. Generally on SWR the priority is clearing the line, which may mean isolating safety systems requiring the train to come out of service, then moving it somewhere more convenient for the fault to be rectified.

According to someone on the ever reliable Facebook, some kids busted the doors on the Chessington run, but not so badly it couldn’t run to Guildford and back

Managed to get my final 455 run on the 22:45 Guildford to Leatherhead. Surprisingly there didn't appear to be anyone taking photo's at Guildford

A bit of a shuffle since before lunch with the 455s replacing 450035 + 450026 that had been allocated 2F91. Those 450s are now allocated to 2V51 replacing 458533 which itself was replacing a pair of 458/4. 458533 now has no allocation. As usual, the root cause looks to be the low 458/4 availability, with currently only 15 458/4s allocated to this evenings peak (22 diagrams).

The 455s are having a trip to Weybridge this morning vice 2*458/4

Last Updated:17/03/2026 04:54

The number of 458/4s in use has increased from 15 yesterday evening to 17 this morning for 22 diagrams.

5712 + 5732 this morning on - 2S07 & 2S16! Wonder if both units will come back out later on 2F91 17.02 Waterloo to Guildford or something like 2S45 Waterloo to Weybridge?

Two units left and still they are running them on one of the two diagrams across the network where they have to cancel stops. There must be a better way!

A bit limited as they're standing in for 458/4s which are highly restricted as to where they can operate.

But it will no longer matter in a few days time!

Is there an expected plan for ‘in a few days time’ once there are no 455s available to cover the diagrams which they currently seem to be covering most days?!

Two 450s are being released by a new 701 diagram next week (see the 701 introduction thread), so at a guess those two units can fill the shortfall that the 455s have been covering this week.

Why couldn’t 701 be allocated to some of the routes that are diagrammed for 458/4? Are there any restrictions for 701 to run on those lines? I just don’t see why 450s are given the priority to vice those 458/4 diagrams…

Because 450s are a nuisance on the reading and weybridge line, and the units can be used to strengthen other services

There are not enough 701s tested and ready yet. Upthread it seems there should have been enough 701s to see off the last of the 455s BUT the 458s are suffering poor availability.

So the last pair of 455s has to cover (via an allocation shuffle I believe).

On both Monday and Tuesday the 455 units got 'tagged' by graffiti artists vandals whilst at Chessington South. On both nights Wimbledon removed the grafitti. Presumably BTP were waiting at Chessington South last night for them.

I do hope so, that’s excellent work if so :)

Hopefully with the graffiti removed. This is the eighth consecutive weekday that this turn has produced 455s. Slightly bizarre that it didn't produce once between December 23rd and Tuesday last week, then it became the favourite turn.

I see. The same thing happened last night (on 5712). I didn’t realise until I saw the graffiti after getting off the train at Waterloo. I didn’t notice BTP presence at Chessington South, although I was at the other end of the platform.

5712 & 5732 missed their early morning return trip to Weybridge this morning, but at least people could get on and off the UP service at Virginia Water today, which they weren't able to do on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It really is poor that they chose those services, let alone two days in a row. Surely there would be a way to put the 455s on a different morning only diagram.

With the ongoing changes moving so fast it is not always possible to come to the 'best optimum' decision at short notice. It's not just about 455's as units, but also other types in the associated mix (458/450), and crew availability (ie: those crews who still retain 455 traction knowledge), and any stock diagrams that (now) start and finish at Wimbledon depot (from the 455 angle).

There will be other diagrams that run all day that start and finish at Wimbledon depot, but most such stock diagrams will involve crews from other depots at some point during any given day, most of which will now have lost 455 knowledge, and there is just not the time to start re arranging crew diagrams at such short notice, so the planners/controllers will have limited options! That's the reality of such stock transitions.

I understand that, but it’s surely not beyond controllers ability to do a set swap with another type of stock. There will be plenty of services at Waterloo at around 0900 which is when the diagram heads back to Wimbledon. As long as the 455 is initially put on a diagram which is at Waterloo around that time it can then be switched to become 5Y82 to Wimbledon, with the other stock then continuing on whatever diagram the 455 had initially been put on.
