Hi all, recently i got caught by a revenue block and i didnt have my railcard with me, just a picture of it which i showed the inspector but it was obviously rejected. I thought i left my wallet at home so i didnt check my bag, sadly it was actually there …

It has been rejected and the reason given is i had the same issue less than 12 months ago. But i am allowed to reappeal.

Is there a chance of re-appealing successfully?

Only if there's some other technicality to make the PF invalid. The forgotten railcard procedure is limited to once per year

Was this actually a Penalty Fare?

Can you share copies of any paperwork you were given or subsequently been sent. Remove any personal information and ref numbers.

I see thanks. I have attached it now. I believe its a PF.

I’m going to read the railcard T&Cs as well as the “Railways (Penalty Fares) (Amendment) Regulations 2022” to see if anything can be appealed.

I see the point made in post 2 is specifically referenced in the appeal decision letter.
You should always have your railcard ready to show. It’s a shame staff don’t ask for them more often as if they did people would be more in the habit of expecting that I think. It used to be standard practice to always be asked. This has reduced since the digital switchover’ of tickets in general I tend to think.

Exactly what i mentioned. Even today when again, i didnt check my bag properly and found my wallet somewhere else inside  the inspector let me off and just told me to have it on me. Every other time, past the first penalty fare, the inspector let me present a picture of the physical railcard. I know revenue protection officers etc cant be as generous but it’s frustrating knowing that my railcard is valid and a simple headshot or cctv would’ve proven it was me travelling. I’ll pay it though, at least it supports the railway.

You were brave to keep showing a photo of the railcard after the first PF and a successful appeal!

Yep and too confident and lax to check my bag! I’m kicking myself for not even checking. Lesson learned. The railcard is ESSENTIAL and to take things more seriously.

I’m glad it’s expiring soon so i can get a digital one

Edit: i wrote that wrong, most times i presented the physical one but the times i showed the picture it was accepted.

The penalty fare looks technically correct to me and as others have said the forgotten railcard policy can only be used once a year. Lesson learned though, and at least it was on a fairly cheap journey!
