Cheapest weekly Bangor to London commute

Hi all,

I’m starting a new role in London and need to commute weekly from Bangor (North Wales) to London Euston/Kings Cross for about 3 months:

• Must arrive before 9am on Mondays.
• Must leave London after 5pm on Wednesdays.
• Currently seeing return fares around £120+ even when booking ahead.
• Happy to travel very early / late.

• Open to split tickets, route changes (Chester / Crewe etc), booking well in advance.

• Could also drive to a closer station if it reduces cost

• No railcard yet (not sure i qualify for any, i'm 33y.o)

What’s a realistic lowest return fare I should be aiming for, and are there any reliable strategies regular commuters use on this route?

I've been aiming to get there on Monday morning. The earlist train leaves Bangor: 05:15 and arrived at Eusten: 08:30.

However, open to grtting there late on Sunday evening too. Accomodation is cheaper than the train ticket.

The forum's ticketing site can get you there on the 0513 direct train and back on the 1702 direct train for £117.95 (checked 13/4->15/4). Considering that an open anytime return is £366 that doesn't seem too bad. There is a cheaper option for the return not leaving Euston until 1840 and requiring a change at Crewe.

Theoretically, you could use Avanti's Superfares to get Chester-Euston for about £19 on Sunday evening, then another Superfare from Euston-Chester. Combine that with an Off-Peak Return (restriction SVR meaning AWC only) for £29.90, and you would be able to do your commute for about £70, although that also requires staying a night in London. Assuming you can get somewhere relatively cheap for the night in London, or you place high value on not having to wake up at crazy-in-the-morning, this could be a viable option.

For the record, all AWC services leaving Euston for Chester (except the 1802 departure) will go on to Holyhead.

I would also recommend the Superfare option, provided you are able to leave work for a train potentially leaving Euston at 5pm.

If not, you could always get the Superfare out on Sunday, and then buy an advance to Chester (potentially with splits) on the return, plus the Bangor - Chester return ticket. You could also experiment to see if advances Bangor-Chester, Euston-Bangor are feasible alongside Superfare (Avanti have some of these, I believe).
