Hi,

During a browsing of NRE, I looked up Hazel Grove station, in Greater Manchester between Stockport and Buxton. The Stations Made Easy guide for the station showed that it had some pretty awesome retro ticket gates, the likes of which I have never seen before, and are almost totally different to what we have now:

Further research told me that they also exist at Brinnington and somewhere else that I have since forgotten. I noted though that all of the stations involved had relatively new buildings, 1970s at the earliest.

Anyway, questions:
1) Are they in use (obviously they don't look it)? Maybe they are used in the peaks only?
2) Were they ever installed elsewhere?
3) Were they a part of a larger project?

Cheers

Bredbury was the other station I found them at.

I've a vague recollection that similar barriers were in place at some stations on the North London Line (although out of use for ages - the immense growth in traffic on the line by the 1990s, even before London Overground made it a half-pleasant travelling experience - would have made them utterly impractical in recent times. Hampstead Heath (the booking office of which is a squat 1970s building of some hideousness) is the first one that springs to my mind, the West Hampstead station on that line too. Possibly at South Hampstead (another 1970s monstrosity) and at other stations on the Watford DC lines subsequently subsumed into London Overground (and much improved by them) too. Can't find any photos that confirm this though!

These are retro! I'm no design expert so how come these turnstiles are worse then gates?

Silver Street had one while the Ticket Office was in a Portakabin-like structure after the fire in the early 80s. If memory serves, the theory went that you handed your ticket in before going through same to exit the station...promptly walking into the person who'd just bought their ticket from the window on the other side of the turnstile!

Cheers,

Many manned stations across the Strathclyde PTE area also had these installed

These were very basic and operated by the station staff
They would remain in the locked position in one direction (towards trains)
Once the ticket had been sold the staff member would press the open button to allow the passenger(s) to pass through
In the other direction the gate would operate normally but it also had an override (reverse) button to place it into the locked position
One member of staff at Barrhead used to do this, as he liked to make sure everyone getting off the train had a ticket, and you could tell when he was working as the queue stretched all the way to the platform at the top of the stairs!

Im not that large but turnstyles of this kind smack me on the bum as im pushing through with the waist as the distance between the bars isnt very generous.

The 20p "pay" toilets at Bury Interchange have full-height type of turnstiles installed which looked very new and these toilets looked like they had been refurbished recently.

Amusing those, theyve put the exit stickers on the wrong side, you enter on the left and leave on the right but the stickers which say push are on the left side.

The toilets themselves are a vast improvement though, very impressive and clean, I think the refurbishment paid for by the installation of the turnstyles has been for the better (though Piccadilly still really annoys me as theirs no real security/upkeep justification for them there).

They've got ones like that at Nelson, quite heavy to push though and a pain if you have luggage.

Know what you mean. Buchanan Street SPT Subway ones are like that! It's awkward too when you have to walk sideways (due to build) with things like phone/iPod/camera etc in trousers!
