I think there have been quite a few vehicles awaiting onward movement to the scrap yard in the past. I assume Derby Litchurch Lane has space at the moment.

In general, it seems to be that the last 458/5 to be stopped hangs around until just after the next 458/5 is stood down. I am guessing, but perhaps it is used a source of spare parts?

Class 458s are Porterbrook assets, not SWR. I was not aware that any Class 458/5s have been publicly designated for scrap.

It was reported back in January that a number of 455 units were still intact at Unimetals, Newport pending resolution of what was happening there: 5713 5735 5738 5864.
I wonder if they are still intact, can anyone say ?

The 458/5s are going to Long Marston not scrap. That also means the redelivery condition is a different standard. For the 455s there's no benefit to the ROSCO of SWR doing minor fixes just to go into the crusher. The prep is more limited; making safe for travel, removing SWR assets they want to keep and meeting the conditions set out. The ROSCO will be wanting to avoid assets they own not being returned rather than the unit being in tip top shape. The ROSCO will usually have the right to carry out inspections, they will be against that lower standard if they happen.

By contrast Porterbrook will hope to get some operator to take on the 458s at some point in future. The likelihood of that ambition being achieved is discussed on other threads. They will be in a materially worse position if units needs repair, even minor issues, before the next operator would put the unit into service. There's multiple ways it might be done, SWR might do their own inspection first or have it jointly with the fleet owner. At some point a Porterbrook rep will inspect the unit and come up with any issues needing remediation. SWR will then need to fix those or agree the cost of those dilapidations. All that stuff will take far more time and be more regimented than for a fleet going to scrap.

I think that depends on whether any more 701s debut imminently. I gather one, perhaps two, may take a bow next week; in which case case the 455s will finally be done.

I wonder if there are maybe staff at Wimbledon who have something of an affection for their last pair? They're distinguished visually by the flowers on 32 and the railtour decals on 12, which might explain why they've survived until last, and whenever I've seen them they've been very clean and shiny, so someone's been looking after them.

I think that their departure will mark the very end for PEP-based stock, since I think their 508 trailers are the only derivatives left in use anywhere?
