A lot will depend on availability of access / egress to the station too. If the Gordon St and Union St accesses are unavailable then I don't see how the station could safely operate. Hopefully a quick clear up operation, demolition of unsafe buildings and some hoarding will go up but I can't see the station opening fully on Monday.

I hate to be negative but look how long Sauchiehall St has been in a mess following the fires there.
Would they really keep Glasgow Central closed for a long period of time given it's a major station?

I imagine Vape shops are going to be under a lot of scrutiny because of this.

They'll need to find a way to get Central open but getting the remains of the buildings safe will be the priority.

Union St is also a major bus route.

to be fair that’s more easily mitigated with diversions than the station being out of order

Sadly the chippy is in that building, no more smokie (!) and chips while waiting for your train... :(

There is still The Blue Lagoon under Hielanman's Umbrella by the low level entrance. I wonder if that might be the only way in/out of the station for a while.

Hope St entrance too. But those 2 exits alone aren't safe to operate at full capacity.

It was only last week that the low level station was flooded.

They will need to inspect the entire glass roof, I can see it being closed all week really.
How can you non-destructively inspect a heat stressed glass roof? It isn't going to show any signs of stress until it fails. Seems to me that any panes which may have been affected are going to have to come out and be replaced

Latest update from bbc

We understand that the flames have not yet breached the Glasgow Central Station building as the walls are keeping the fire at bay.

We're also hearing there is no visible damage to the station, but we'll keep you posted.

Well yes, compared to the collapsed building that's burning and is burnt inside out, I'd say that the station is fine based on that photo even with some flames on the outside.

The fire appears to be calming down a little now though, based on the live streams, but everyone thought that when it started, hopefully they it sorted soon
Where can we access the live streams?

Pretty bad, how can it spread so much given the Fire Service were there quite quickly

given we are aware of there being batteries present, presubably in large numbers, its possible they had a series of explosions / ignitions which will have sent up the shop. Its also a historic building so possibly large amounts of wood present.

Fire service would also no doubt have had a priority on keeping it away from the public ect rather than saving the building itself.

I’ve seen 2 or 3 different ones on TikTok earlier, unsure if they’re still live but didn’t take long for them to come up in the live feed as they all had a lot of viewers.
Can you provide the URL?

I am due to travel from Edinburgh tomorrow seemingly will be alot of cancellations according to bbc

TransPennine Express said all services between Glasgow Central and Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street would not run on Monday.

Delays and cancellations are also expected on the operator's routes between Edinburgh and Manchester Airport and Edinburgh and Newcastle due to staff being displaced.

Affected passengers can use their tickets for travel on Sunday or Monday if services resume by Tuesday or Wednesday.

JourneyCheck has everything as cancelled tomorrow in and out of Central High Level except:

Glasgow Central to Edinburgh via Shotts stoppers, being started from/terminated at Holytown

Glasgow Central to Lanark, being started from/terminated at Motherwell

In theory you should not be affected. However, AFAIAA, the Scottish based crews for these services book on at Glasgow Central - so it's not a certainty.

That said I would expect alternative book on arrangements to be made to ensure service provision.

Taking a look at NRE over on the Paisley side of things, Ayr services seem to be getting terminated at Paisley Gilmour Street, with the Largs services meeting them and terminating at Kilwinning while Ardrossan Harbour is cancelled. Gourock also terminating at Paisley, Wemyss Bay doesn't seem to have updated yet as they're still showing the normal timetable.

Yes, I think they've begun making alterations since I looked some time ago.

I did hope they'd make some effort to run routes from the nearest suitable station to Central, so the likes of Paisley Gilmour Street for Inverclyde/Ayrshire; Motherwell for Lanark/Edinburgh via Carstairs; perhaps even run Cathcart/Newton/Neilston to/from the Pollokshields stations and bus acceptance on train tickets from there.

Surely ticket acceptance with LNER/XC?

I don't believe either of the Pollokshields have the appropriate infrastructure to allow turnbacks without significant wrong road running?

Perusal of Realtime Trains suggests that Avanti services to Glasgow Central on Sunday evening have generally terminated short at Preston/Carlisle or have diverted at Carstairs to Edinburgh.

TPE similarly but just to add to the general woes, the last northbound TPE passenger service of the day (1S88 2109 Preston/Edinburgh) was detained at Lockerbie with the Daventry/Coatbridge 4S45 DRS freight ahead apparently having failed at Beattock, eventually getting on the move just under 3 hrs late. The TPE service reached Edinburgh about 160 minutes late.

Behind it was Avanti's 1S98 1925 Euston to Glasgow Central. This disappeared from Realtime Trains at Carstairs S, about 150 mins late at this stage.

One presumes no connection between this disruption and the Glasgow fire.

Operational convenience rather than that of the public. Can’t they terminate at Whifflet, where passengers could at least pick up a Dalmuir service?
