Had a great trip last night on the 1653 ex-Cardiff Central to Manchester Piccadilly, on my way back from Ireland on a Sail Rail via Fishguard. Catering staff boarded at Newport and quickly began the service. Three courses with the pork belly starter, flat iron steak main, and sticky toffee pudding dessert. Definitely the best food I've had on a train and restaurant quality. Chef seemed to get off, with his trolley, at Shrewsbury but the service staff continued to Piccadilly so I could finish off the meal with a miniature of Penderyn single malt. Highly recommended. Purchased a guaranteed Seatfrog upgrade to sit in first class. Really comfortable ride in the Mark 4.

Was checking RTT on the train from Fishguard in case of any set swapping in which case I would have glumly stayed aboard the Class 197 all the way up to Piccadilly instead!

Powerfully evocative words

Glad you enjoyed. I had the steak main on Monday and didn't get the best cut, but the rest of the meal was good. Lemon cheesecake better than I was expecting!

I was under the impression that the 16xx from CDF had limited catering.

Presumably, there is an update from the website. Be a bit awkward ordering at Crewe to find the chef got off in Shrewsbury?

I assume the Crewe mention is actually for all catering. The tables on the 14:53 (which forms the 18:30 southbound) are never showing signs of food being served on arrival at Piccadilly and it is only 40 minutes from Crewe.

I can see HD07 has been allocated to 1W11 tomorrow morning. Issues in the feed? Normally, the Canton allocations are very late appearing. I have even set off to catch the train before it was allocated in the past.

Certainly Unusual for a Canton start to show so early but HD07 is in the plan for the 1W11 start tomorrow so it is correct.

It’s worried me the past but I’ve eaten on that train at least 5 times and will again this week (I hope). I wonder if it’s chef-staffed if possible rather than always as with others? Like GWR’s travelling chef? Although I’m fairly sure they need a chef to do the sandwiches etc.
The timetable booklet has 1653 as buffet only

Would be good to have that updated if it's not the case

A very busy 1W11 this morning. Glad to have the 5 carriages instead of the 3-car 197 that is covering 1W13.

Not sure what happened with first though. The leading standard carriage had a broken toilet so I walked through first near Whitchurch. No one seemed to have a coffee cup on their table. I am sure I had the last two weeks (I book first if I am able to commit to advances).

I think it was only the Swansea-Cardiff part of 1W13 that was a unit because of overnight engineering works meaning the ECS has to go via the Vale of Glamorgan.

There does however appear to be a few units covering full diagrams today including the 0853 Cardiff-Manchester so not quite sure whats going. The MK4 had such a good run for many weeks without hardly any substitutions.

Ah yes. Was very early when I checked.

08:53 and 16:53 were 3-car.

14:53 was 4-car

So a bad day for Mk4.

Thats good news. As I said above they have had an excellent reliable rate in recent months with only really the last week seeing quite a few services operated by units.

The fleet has definitely climbed its way up the reliability charts, that's for sure. A few slip ups here and there but overall going strong. I haven't seen a proper failure requiring a thunderbirds assistance in a while!

That is really good to hear.

I see today we have a 3 car 197 covering 1 diagram according to real time trains.
