SWR 455 twilight diagrams/workings

Are the 455s still able to run down as far as Guildford? I'm sure they did on the tour (and I was on it!) but don't know if they can now

They have been to Guildford many times this year. Mainly via Cobham but also via Bookham. I'm not aware of any runs from Woking to Guildford this year.

Reports of eight unavailable 458/4s today, so being covered by this pair, plus 3 x 701s.

Reports of eight unavailable 458/4s today, so being covered by this pair, plus 3 x 701s.

Eight down with only 16 458/4 in service looks to be correct, but I think only one 701 is vice 2*458/4 (701020 on 2R90). The old 458/5 diagram (2C09) which went over to 2*458/4 yesterday is back to 458533 today. There are two single 450s covering for the other two pairs of 458/4, 450023(2S07) and 450066(2U09). 5712 + 5732 are vice 2*450 which has released a pair of 450 to cover for a 701(2M03) which I assume is how 701020 was available. Plus only 35 701s in service this morning, so one diagram was cancelled(2D03) until being replaced by a pair of 450s off a peak working.

I think 455717 and 455727 have been stood down.

That leaves just one pair left ready and available - 455712 & 455732.

But given the number of short formed 458/4s services over the past week I think SWR must be determined to manage without the 455s.

Plus, as of next week, the two 458/5 will be spare or in reserve, so I think it far more likely that both will be used 5-car vice 8-car 458/4 than the 455s being used. In the past when 701s were in short supply, a pair of 455s would work vice a pair of 450s (2J08 diagram) and the pair of 450s work vice 701. That same arrangement could have applied for the 450s to deputise for 458/4s but has rarely happened which I presume is due to the decreasing train crew knowledge of 455s.

I am a bit puzzled it was not a pair.

After thought. It occurs to me that the last pair of 455s might not be allowed out if there is not a rescue pair of 455s available should anything go wrong. OR would one half of the pair running suffice for rescue purposes ?.

One 701 is away in Bournemouth receiving its advertising livery (060), one is covering for absentee 458s (018) and one has been out of passenger use for a couple of weeks (058). That leaves 39 units for 37 diagrams so it does not take many to be stopped for other reasons for the fleet to come up short. There has also been a pair of 450s out all day vice 701 instead of a pair of 450s working the 2F91 diagram as booked.

701 availability seems to have been fine recently, the shortages and swapping has been as a result of 458/4 shortages. The 455s are on a 450 diagram this evening, a pair of 450s are on a 701 diageam, and a 701 on a 458/4 diagram.

Yes okay, but what I mean is, on that diagram with a 455 today, would there really be no way of getting a 450 or 701 out on it without causing a short formation elsewhere? Aka - are things that tight that the 455 is the only option, or would it have been possible to send a 450 or 701 out instead? Because in a few weeks, they won't have that 455 to use if this happens again, which it will.
