Have just stumbled across a kind-of goldmine on the internet through randomly doing a search on 4VEG units.
On the Southern Electric Group website there appear to be a number of old editions of their magazine "Live Rail", mostly from the 70s but a few from the 80s and 90s, for download.
Some, from the 80s and 90s, are explicitly linked: see https://www.southernelectric.org.uk/previous-live-rail//
However some others, from the 70s, are not linked but can still be accessed. See for example https://www.southernelectric.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/LR_42.pdf for May 1978; other editions can be accessed by changing the '42' to something else.
There are really some quite detailed insights into the railways of the time from these: for example the above edition has a full rundown of the May 1978 pattern on the Central Division which is interesting.
