Why are guards needed for WMT services from Tyseley dpeot?

Please forgive me if this is an odd question, but why does West Midlands Trains require a conductor to be on their trains when they leave Tyseley depot? Why can’t the guard just board the train at the first stop on the route?

Because not all services start at a guards depot. For example, a few years back you'd have a driver and guard both book on at BSW, taxi down to Tyseley, get the unit off and the unit would go straight off to Dorridge to become the first 0540 off Dorridge. Same for the first Stratford upon Avon departure of the day.

Yep, it's just the services that start from Dorridge and Whitlocks End that leave Tyseley with a guard. Just easier to send the guard in the same taxi as the driver to pick the train up.
