EMR Class 222’s - declining reliability

Not sure if this means there is one less 222 on the MML now, or whether EMR managed to sort themselves out, but it would appear so far that they’ve reshuffled a lot of the moves out of Cricklewood to try and limit the damage - so far not found a flow completely cancelled as a cause of these failures though.
Short form on 1735 now, that was showing as fully formed this morning.

Alongside this 222017 had an issue at Kentish Town on 5B40, however this was resolved at Kentish and the train returned immediately back to service, where it covered for 222020 on 1F42.
Nothing was wrong with 017!

Well, it was on 5B40 after coming off 1B40 from STP to Cricklewood, where it was terminated at Kentish after an unscheduled stop, they got it fixed and back out in an instant though.

Nothing was wrong with it. The intention was to shunt it to Kentish Town and back to replatform the set. The headcode 5B40 was just used for that. It's one of the much better sets too

Huh, and so of all the cancellation codes they could’ve used they decided MD - train defective. Couldn’t they have used PL - Planned not to run or something instead to avoid confusion…

To be fair the last thing control offices are thinking about are enthusiast interpretations of cancellation codes for empty stock workings, they're quite often wrong.

It wasn't that the unit on 1B40 was defective, it was to cover for the failure of the unit on 1B34

Well, not sure if the cancellation code we see on websites like RTT is also somewhat what’s put up in departure boards/station announcements, or what drivers and station staff see
It's an empty stock move so none of the general public will see the information unless they are actively looking for said move

Yeah I suppose

Also, another thing, noticed 222006 arrived into Nottingham on 1D46, but the following 1B98 was canned for MD (again), however I cannot find any ECS moves out of Nottingham at all, did the unit run anywhere without an allocated headcode/allocations to a passenger service, and if so, where to?

006 and 020 were the only IC units to be pulled from service today (supposing 006 returned to Derby off-timetable and nothing else happens in the last few hours of the day), not even by 810s were pulled.

222006 in coach D has its engine stuck in idle mode whilst on the move. Not sure how many of the other engines are operating normally.

Looks like 19 of 22 sets in service today. Long term 007 still out of service along with 013 and 102.
I noted 007 parked out in the open at Derby Etches park on Weds. Do we know if this unit will ever come back into service or do we take it that it requires too many repairs and will be one of the first 5-car units to now go off lease?

022 and 104 came from the depot almost 70 minutes late causing that delay, I wonder what the issue was
Coupling issue at Etches Park

007 was seen yesterday undergoing some extensive repairs to the first class driving vehicle. I can't see it back in service anytime soon

It is normal practice for trains leased from Roscos to be have "dilapidation repairs" undertaken, and handed back offlease in serviceable condition. Examples are TPE Mk5 set 1 which spent time at Wolverton. before being taken to Longsight as a class 7, then taken to Long Marston also as class 7 or class 8 (low speed). Numerous visits to various locations like Landore and Central Rivers by class 175s before they were dumped at Ely. So my guess is 222007 will be restored to working order at Etches Park prior to normal service, or Rosco handback.

Looks like 222022 had issues this morning but apart from a brief exit from service at Derby has stayed out the rest of the day.

222101 looks like it has developed a fault this evening and was taken out of service at Nottingham. Looks like it won't be fulfilling the rest of its diagram.

I was on 222101 from Kettering to Leicester and noticed it only had three engines running departing Leicester. Didn't seem to make much difference as we had arrived there three mins early.

I may have asked this question before, but I don't see any advantage in waiting until handover to make repairs but rather carry them out when the trains are still in service.

I don't know what's involved in the 222 'dilapidation repairs' but inoperative (one of) tap water/soap dispenser/hand-dryer in the toilets seems to be common. Toilets looked out of use for unspecified reason. There was a high incidence of the vestibule door push buttons not working ('use the floor stud') but to be fair this seems less common. I travelled on one today with window glazing obscured by condensation.

If these have to be repaired before handover, why wait until then? Or does 'dilapidation' have a specific meaning in train leasing contracts?

Of course, it's possible that these defects are being remedied currently but they rapidly re-occur.

Looks like 222009 failed yesterday. This was one of the slower units consistently producing slow acceleration from stations. Only 18 units out today out of 20 required.

Engines are fine on that unit. It was cancelled because of damage sustained to the unit

What sort of damage? If the engines are fine, it seems to have some traction fault? It was consistently slower than other units.

Have to admit I don't follow the twists and turns of how individual units are running, but when I want a quick "how things are going", I look at the evening departures from St Pancras between 1600 and 2010

On a good day, the 1602, 1735, 1835 and 1902 seem to be planned to be 10 cars, with everything else as 5.
Today, only the 1602 and 1902 are currently expected to be 10 cars.
So this is consistent with being a couple of units down as another poster has noted

You get an earlier indication of how many 222s are out by looking to see if the 06.09 Kettering - Nottingham is cancelled.

222006 terminated at Kettering platform 4. Currently still sat there (my house backs onto the station.) Reason unknown.
