2x class 20s Crewe-Kingswear.

Departs 06:15, arrives back 02:20.

Is that the latest scheduled time a day trip has returned? The reason for the late return is to give normals sufficient time in Kingswear / Dartmouth to see the Red Arrows display, leaving there at 19:15

I can't think of any day trip booked to return that late (the actual booked time is 02.18 - Pathfinder always round it to the nearest 5 mins on their website). I'm not even sure I've ever got back so late off a tour, even one that has been running exceedingly late. I just hope that Travelodge haven't 'overbooked' the place that night.

I think the latest I've ever done is 2330, at Crewe if my memory serves me correctly, there are quite a few tours over the course of a year booked back around then.

Having said that, I did the Alloa 'Alloer in August 2008, about 1930 from Bristol Parkway, into Glasgow Central (via Crewe, York and Dunfermline) at roughly 1030 the following morning.

I surely can't be the only one to think that 20 hours on a railtour is a bit too much, even for the most hardcore 20 enthusiast?

There tour is less than 15 hours - you do get a 5+ hour break at the destination!

I meant as a day. Each to their own though I suppose, some would be willing to do it just for the 20s (and some for the special planes that leave coloured vapour trails...). I would do it if a serious line bash was a possibility! ;)

Do you not require the connection between NR and the Paignton & Dartmouth Railway?

Yes, but I'm more focused on crossovers and the like: it is easy enough to take out a crossover overnight (they did it at Hoghton around here and I didn't know until I read it in Modern Railways!), whereas connections, such as at Paignton and Attleborough, almost certainly will be around for quite a few years yet. A simple matter of priority.
