I recently had a seven-minute connection at Wigan North Western for a journey to Edinburgh from Liverpool. I think this is perfectly quick and reasonable when heading north because the platforms are right next to each other, and when heading south you just need to travel through an underpass. This is assuming things go smoothly.
But on the way back the train at Preston incurred a four-minute delay which meant I now had a three-minute connection to get off the train, run through the underpass and up the platform. Thankfully the train was held for a bit, most likely to accommodate connecting passengers. But it showed me just how quickly things could fall apart if even one train is delayed.
