No details about how this rail link would like. With this announcement, you'd almost thing there was an upcoming election.

Scottish Labour would build a rail link with Glasgow Airport if it wins the next election, the party’s leader announced on Monday.

The project was considered in the early years of the SNP administration, but scrapped in 2009 – by then finance secretary John Swinney – as a result of pressures caused by the financial crash.

In the years since, the plans featured in designs for the Clyde Metro – an expansive transport project covering Glasgow and surrounding areas – which is at an early phase.

Scottish Labour said on Monday the creation of the link would be a “national priority”.

This is coming from the party that was silent on reinstating HS2 phase 2a when it was easy to do so. It's definitely a last-ditch attempt at trying to improve support for 'Scottish' Labour.

It’s so built up I don’t know how you’d do it, even without the capacity issues at Central. A tram shuttle up the old Deanside branch via Braehead with a connection at Cardonald might be just about feasible?

Realistically I think it’s all as likely as digging out the White Cart to put on a riverboat to the airport.

From memory there was to be a branch from Paisley St James eastwards into the airport. I thought it was a well advanced proposal when the plug was pulled

Surely the capacity issues were addressed with the two extra platforms at Central and the third line between Shields Jc and Paisley - The then-proposed Airport link being the reason these were provided!

I believe this capacity has now been taken up by more trains to Ayrshire, which would be politically difficult to take away again.

The extra Ayrshire services no longer operate now.

The problem with the spur from St James, it was going to need the fuel farm moved which was going at a huge cost.

Oh dear, I genuinely thought we'd killed this idea off. The sheer economics of building the line and serving 2tph basically all shacks from Central will kill any business case.

It was always a white elephant, and even back in the day the sums were questionable to say the least

I suggest a 1.5 mile people mover shuttle system from Paisley Gilmour St station to the airport terminal, like the Luton DART. Then every fast Ayrshire train is an airport express.
Gilmour St, being in the town centre with all its bus connections, makes it a great local connector too, for airport employees and nearby flyers etc.

A better link between Paisley and the Airport would definitely be good, way better than the current 757 bus, which uses a different stop in Paisley from every other bus service (albeit handy for Gilmour Street station) and trundles round the northern suburbs of Paisley en route. Whether a fixed link of any kind can be justified is another matter! IMHO the original rail link plan should have gone ahead but that chance has I think gone.

The issue is it is 9 minutes from Glasgow Central to Gilmour St, plus 5 mins to change, then another 5 mins on a shuttle. First 500 is timed for 12-14 minutes from the airport terminal to stops nearest Central. This increases to 20-25 minute in peak times. Even the original rail proposal for branch after St James would struggle to meet the off-peak timings with stops at Gilmour St and St James. Sure there is the group that will never use the bus, but does that market justify the new rail link. Or you could spend significantly less on a hard shoulder bus lane on the M8, cut the congestion penalty on the airport bus, and cut journey times on other bus routes as well.

The problem with a rail link from Glasgow Central to the airport is that not everybody is going to Glasgow city centre and there would be no easy connection to places north of Glasgow. How useful would Manchester Airport station be if trains only ran to the city centre? There's also the fact that traffic at Glasgow Airport has been stagnant for decades, 7 million per year in 2000, 8 million in 2024 (meanwhile Edinburgh Airport has gone from 5.5 million in 2000 to 15.7 million in 2024).

Fair points, but a rail link from Central would provide simple, comfortable connections with the multiplicity of other train services there, both High and Low Levels, whereas the bus means leaving the station, finding the right stop and waiting outside until the bus turns up. Although I still believe a rail link to the Airport is unlikely!

Using valuable paths, rolling stock and crew for dedicated expresses, and the high costs of the new infrastructure make it unlikely, I agree, especially considering the airport's lack of growth compared to Edinburgh. An APM to the airport would connect well with the whole Ayrshire network at Paisley. Operating costs for a DART-style link would be low and fixed, little more than an elevator, so frequent service can be maintained around the clock more affordably. Any extra expresses introduced to meet airport demand would go on to other destinations, providing more benefits. I'd suggest branding the APM terminal at Gilmour St as part of the airport, with a big Welcome to Glasgow Airport sign. The aim would be to convince the traveller they're already entering the airport when they leave the train.

How would you get an APM from Gilmour Street to the airport without using the railway between Gilmour Street and St James?

Probably roughly follow the east bank of the White Cart or perhaps elevated over Abercorn Street then onto the old railway. Swing left across the river after passing under the M8.

Yes, as above in post #13

I've refined the terminal location in Paisley. It's now shown in the car park and Openreach yard behind the telephone exchange, with an elevated walkway at railway platform level punched through part of the old exchange building, across Old Sneddon St and straight into Gilmour Street station onto platform #1. Existing vertical circulation within the station, improved as necessary, would be used to access other platforms.

The councils had developed plans to build a £150 million people mover using City Deal funding. However, when Clyde Metro became a thing it was decided that a people mover wasn’t the best option and the funding was reallocated to other City Deal projects.

SPT is currently working on the Clyde Metro Case For Investment and we should find out this year what the plan is for an airport link.

Gondola would be cheapest option by far and would work well. However I think the best option would be to extend the subway via Queen Elizabeth university hospital, Braehead, and Renfrew to the airport, though this would likely be far too expensive.
Far too expensive, and far too slow. Far too small, too.

I think that any proposal to travel to Paisley (by whatever means) and then change into a train to Glasgow is doomed. Why would you bother? The airport bus does the whole journey to Glasgow in 25 minutes (less at quiet times). Changing at Paisley is likely to end up with a similar overall journey time. No advantage at all, and inconvenient if you have luggage, mobility issues or it’s raining.

I’ve grown old listening to proposals whereby the Subway would have an ‘infinity’ (figure of eight) loop redressing the balance of a largely western bias. Your suggestion just exacerbates the western bias, of a system that is limited in so many other ways, (start with the tunnel diameter). The airport is held as some holy grail but the management here would have a major disincentive (they charge for ongoing access) something that a link will seriously diminish this cash cow.

Fat better to start afresh - why not heavy rail loop the covers Paisley, the Airport, Yoker & Scotstoun?

In my opinion, if the subway were to have a second line, it should be of entirely new and different technology. Maybe something like a VAL or the DLR, short train lengths, high frequencies. It wouldn’t be good for an airport link, but for linking residential areas closer to the city centre not already linked to the subway or heavy rail. Perhaps an Argyle Line extension southwest to the Airport, diverging from an enlarged Partick station would be more beneficial in providing better regional connectivity to the airport.
