Farnworth tunnel had a big advantage in that the adjacent bore (that was abandoned) could be used to maintain a restricted level of service while the tunnel was re-bored.Farnworth Tunnel type solution?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/kaskaandjim/10166126524/ this image suggests Kinghorn sits on carboniferous limestone. No idea if that is good or bad to tunnel through.Possibly, though it depends on the geological conditions.
Worth also noting there's houses directly on top of the tunnel, so any attempt to re-bore the tunnel would need to consider the risk of damage from ground movement.
