Hi all

Please help me with this prosecution letter

Me and my sister was planned to go London on Nov 2025 but suddenly our car wasn’t working so we decided to book train and put railcard thinking that they won’t ask as mine was expired and my sister didn’t have one.

However we have used our friends railcard and got caught with the revenue member.

We didn’t accept st first then accepted our mistake. We have correct address and names and got this letter

I’m very scared as this is my first time so unsure how to write and what to write

Me and my sister won’t go in train often so we didn’t know the consequences

We are scared that this will go to court

Firstly, please redact your name from the document (as much as I love the ironic surname!).

Secondly, you have a very good chance of receiving an out of court settlement - you need to write back to them:

- Honestly owning up to what you did and that you apologise for and regret your actions
- What you’ve learned from the experience (I.e. you will ensure you always have a valid ticket for your entire journey in future)
- Kindly requesting that they consider settling the matter out of court

Seems like it’s GTR and they’re known for being reasonable and will almost certainly settle with you given it’s your first offence.

You'll be okay. GTR generally only take people to court when they don't engage with the process. You're just going to have to pay some money to resolve this - somewhere between £50 and £200. Write a draft based on the advice above and we'll help you improve it.

The forum moderators will deal with it for you now it’s been reported - this is usually quite quick.

However, if you ‘edit’ your post by pressing the three little dots at the bottom of the post, you should be able to delete the image and replace it with one where you’ve edited the photo and blacked out the name.

There are lots of good examples around the disputes and prosecutions section of this forum for how to reply to these letters - here are some good ones from recently - but don’t copy them, it needs to be original and from you. Also, don’t use an LLM to help you write it.

There are plenty of similar cases to take inspiration from, but you basically need to to apologise for what you did, make it clear that you will not do it again, and ask (or almost beg) to settle out of court, offering to pay the fare due and their administrative costs. It’s best if you can draft something and post it here for us to review because this should be written by you and in your words as far as possible.

It’s best if you attach a printed letter as it’s easier to read. Just write something like “see attached” in the space provided. Or you could stick or staple your printed response into the box if you prefer.

Making sure every single page has your reference number and ideally name and address on it in case anything gets separated in their office.
