According to the list on the first page, there’s some more 701/5 stored at Darby Litchurch Lane and Old Dalby, unsure when’ll be those move south
Yes there a a few odds and sods at Derby Litchurch Lane - 5 off them :-
701003
701501
701502
701508
701524
I suspect these are not yet accepted by SWR. They may never have left the East Midlands (Derby, Old Dalby test track or Worksop). Except 701508 which came back from SWR on 20/08/2025. The other four have been in the East Midlands since December 2024 / January 2025.

Did anyone else notice that the pair of 701/5 that came back from Long Marson on 16.2.26 was in a different pairing to when the sets went ?
When they went the pairing was 701509+519 (sent 30.04.25) and 701512+517 (sent 19.05.25), but the pair that came back was 701509+517. Obviously they have done some shuffling for some reason, always assuming of course that the reports were correct !.
My bold - It was 701509 and 701512 that were delivered last Monday (not 517) ?.

But Yes. I wondered if it the change of order was part of the broken "bridge" problem, a result of shuffling over the months or a choice of least festered (701509 and 701512 will be of a more similar age than one of 701517 and 701519).

Regarding those at Derby:
701003, 701508/524 have all been on the Southern and have gone back to Derby:
701003 arrived Eastleigh 07.02.24, 701508 Eastleigh 15.06.23 and 701524 Eastleigh 24.11.24:
701501/502 have girated between Derby and Worksop but have never been delivered to SWR - 701501 was reported on the Derby Test Track 09.10.19 (as long ago as that !!) and it went to Velim for testing 10.02.20. I guess these two are probably non-standard and need a lot of sorting out to make them standard.
[Sorry for my error in quoting 701509/517 as returning to SWR it was indeed 701509/512 - but my comment about different pairing is still valid].

Yes the different pairing you refer to is intriguing.

Your dates go further back than mine. There has been an eye watering amount of to-ing and fro-ing over the years !.
The fact 701501 must have been built over six years ago is a sobering thought !.

Hopefully they manage to get a ten car out next week
Does it matter what unit comes out next? The early part of the 701/0 pipeline doesn't seem to be the issue. Hopefully some more enter service soon to allow more diagrams to run.
Is there enough depot space on the SWR network to stable these new units without sending off others? I was under the impression that the 458/4s would have to start being sent away before all the 701s could be accommodated
At one point the plan was to have the 701s, the 458/4s and 450s/444s so theoretically there will be space. It might not be particularly comfortable operationally though.

Treating a 10-car 701 as two units for ease of comparison there are 35 "units" to be delivered. 9 units aren't staying long term (6 455s mentioned above and 3 458/5s). 6 450s are redeployed in the diagrams for this timetable period once more 701s roll out. There's another 22 450s doing diagrams to be worked by 701, if they could lengthen other services or be stabled elsewhere that's everything covered.

That relies on enough 701s being out in service both to lengthen and efficiently stable the remainder of the other fleets. Feltham has 5 roads with 8-car formations leaving 10 cars unoccupied. Staines is used by a single 5-car which would create space for another unit. Similarly places where 701s are stabled often aren't efficiently using space. Wimbledon has several shorter sidings available which 10-car 701s can't use. Farnham has 5 701s currently (1 in service, 4 not) with 3 10-car roads and the rest 12. Which means the same Farnham sidings with stock swapped around could hold another 2 450 units. That will make the rehome requirement smaller than the number above as well.

SWR wouldn't be in a position to receive the 26 extra "units" tomorrow. They may also decide to move the 458s out for operational convenience or come to some arrangement with the fleet owner. Short term the constraint will be the number of not in passenger service 701s and to a lesser extent the stock coming off lease soon.

701501 and 701502 of what i've seen is that these two units have no numbers, and were not even swr vinyl applied, nor seats installed, so totally far away from the standard

Usual with the first sets of a train. Those would have been testing/ prototype units that need all the final tweaks and changes added

Given that 701509 and 701512 arrived at Long Marston on different dates why is that pairing any more likely than 701509 paired with 701517 ?
As previously stated 701509 and 701519 arrived as a pair on 30/04/25 and 701512 and 701517 arrived as a pair on 19/05/25.

I think you missed the point. I was correcting a typo that said 517 came back with 509 when in fact it was 512 came back with 509.

I think all three of us (@Peter Sarf, @wickham and @Bobcp) agree it was odd that 509 got separated from the one it arrived at Long Marston with - ie 519

I notice that today 701005 is working a 35th diagram commencing 2G08 0537 Guildford to London Waterloo which had been 2*450. This diagram is one of the five extra diagrams shown to be 701 in the February 9th LTP diagrams. Is this a coincidence, or is this diagram now booked 701?

That’s good news if it is indeed a new 701 diagram. It would be the first since late December.

If SWR is to meet its stated target of 45 diagrams by the end of the summer it needs to be introducing two diagrams per month from now on.

I thought it was 50 (from what the press release said) but either way you are of course correct: they need to get a shake on.

There seem to have been slightly different versions of their statement! Maybe it's 45 diagrams utilising 50 units. That would make sense.

Is there a source stating 45? This press release says:
SWR plans to reach 50 Arterio diagrams in service by the end of Summer 2026 as set out by the Department for Transport on Tuesday 9 December: GBR: improvements train operators in public ownership are making for customers - Case study - GOV.UK
That's stated as an in service target rather than number of units. It also roughly adds up that 50% to 75% would require a near 50% increase in diagrams. The only wiggle room in the stated target is that each 701/5 could reasonably count as an Arterio diagram.

It is indeed booked 701 now.

Thank you for confirming this. It looks like the displaced 450s have been used to strengthen 2L14 0550 Basingstoke to London Waterloo from 4-car to 8-car and 1T26 0755 Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo from 8-car to 12-car if this mornings allocations are anything to go by. I appreciate that a Monday morning following a weekend of significant engineering work alterations may not be a reliable guide, but these formations also align with those in the LTP diagrams.

For those interested, I have started a separate thread on the cascade of 450s back to main line services and the resulting strengthening plans.

I would’ve thought that the 458/5 diagrams would’ve been replaced first before doing the 450s. Anyone know how much longer the 458/5s have left and when they are due to be replaced by the 701?

Indeed. Replacement of the single unit that works the 0809 Reading to Waterloo can't come soon enough, unless SWR think it's acceptable to leave passengers behind from Feltham onwards.

They are running in booked formations this morning so have been strengthened. As you say though, that could just be this morning and I'm not able to check the rest of the week yet.
The diagram starting with 2G08 is definitely booked 701 all week though. There should be diagrams regularly going over to 701 again now.

It's still booked 5-458 LTP at the moment, and that's with an extra 4 701 diagrams in compared to this week so I don't expect it will change imminently. It does seem odd though.

SWR seems to have separated 701509 again from the rest, this time it's been moved over to Strawberry Hill CSD, under 5Q02 from Wimbledon Park earlier today, and is currently in one of the sheds.

That is very interesting - at least a 5 car will fit in the shed (the roards are pretty short) but I wonder why it has gone there, just to put it out of the way or for training.

Perhaps SETG are going to preserve it
