Without going into too much detail would you be able to give us a bit of a clue as what the nature of the fault had been and an indication of the remedy for 002 to return to depot?
I heard it was one of the safety critical systems that malfunctioned and kept making the TMS apply the emergency brakes. GWR techs are not overly experienced with 175s just yet, but once the Alstom Techs arrived and managed to find and isolate the dodgy part, they could gain brake release and take the unit to Laira for repairs.

I hope Laira keeps in touch with the Alstom team, as it looks as if they might be needed quite often....

Thanks for the information.

What do you mean? It's still showing as entirely cancelled with no time reports.
If you click on link in post 2404 it originally showed 175011+175007. Then corrected to just showing 175007 which is now in the dock platform at Plymouth because it's 30 mins late and never took up 5Z13 to Penzance. Yesterday Trasky did not agree with open trains especially over positions when trying to watch saltash cams..

Odder and odder

I suspect this will change to 175001

Just in time to catch this at Saltash and it was 175011. I may have captured an image.

Let's clear things up....

175007 failed this morning with power issues on 5Z12

175011 came out to do an additional training run after being fixed (was due to be on 5Z12 with 175007 this morning). This then subsequently failed on 2C26

175001 was having issue at the same time as 175011 at Plymouth hence 001 didnt work 2C26

Bit of a nightmare day with these things... scored a hatrick with unit issues.!

Not a great day so far for the 175 at all.

What were 007`s power issues, was it lack of engine power, transmission unable to take power or electrical power problems ?

001 and 011 not having good days either then.

Lack of power in general. Was trying to mimic an IET by only managing 20mph up Dainton bank. Same unit has had the same issue before

It's not a good look is these "new" 175s for GWR and they keep breaking down. At least when they were with TFW they actually worked.

Regarding 007`s lack of power up Dainton bank and assumption is dangerous but here goes. I`m going to assume the following that other 2 car units have no problem going up it and that 007 has no known faults, has both engines running and each cars transmission is taking power along with no engine yellow faults which will then derate the engine to between 1400 + 1600 RPM down from its full chat of 2000 RPM the lower engine RPM in turn then affects the turbo boost pressure, also that each of the transmissions oil temperature is within normal parameters and not over heating which would then "revert to idle" that cars engine until the transmission oil is then cooled back to normal working range and that non of the charge air pressure ( turbo boost ) flexible hoses are not leaking.
If all of the above is hunky dory charge air pressure is regularly lost due to cracks in the welds of charge air radiators which has been a pain over the years reducing engine power.

I do seam to remember loads of problems with the 175s when they were working in Wales, sort of the reason loco hauled diagrams kept coming back after the farewell run

All the Coradia fleets (175, 180, 334, 458, 460) have been flaky over the years but have generally managed to get by.

They worked in Wales and England. Also a noticeable decline when ATW went to TfW and the maintenance regime changed hands.

I remember the 175s being fairly unreliable in their early days (though not as bad as their half sisters the 180s). But once train crews and fitters got used to them, they improved quite a lot, until their last days at TfW when the maintenance regime changed. GWR may well get them working properly again.

They had their issues, but their reliability as a long distance fleet was generally quite good and availability was also quite good. The issues, as already mentioned, were when the maintenance regime slipped, which is a whole different topic.
Get train crew and maintenance staff used to them, look after them properly, and they'll be good units.

Another significant negative factor impacting these units are the problems sourcing spare parts. While these units were in cold storage, the supply chain collapsed as no-one was buying bits of Class 175s. This is in turning making it much harder to resolve the poor mechanical and electrical condition of the 175s. These units are over a quarter of a century old, so not it's not exactly current generation.

Well if these don’t work, there are a few spare voyagers knocking around!

Be quick, there’s rumoured interest from XC.

I think "when they were working in Wales" meant "working in Wales in addition to England", rather than "working only in Wales".

I don`t think there was a noticeable decline between ATW and TfW but I concede that there may have been a dip with the maintenance contractor change

It is possible that certain products of the supply chain were ramped down in particular engine raft and cooler group raft overhauls which at the time of withdrawal were supplied by LH Plant but there will still be the large float somewhere in the system and the same probably applies to final drives/wheelsets too. Hvacs were repaired in house at Longsight so again the float is there somewhere. A large proportion of electrical/electronic equipment was repaired in house and is similar across Coradia fleets albeit with differing software levels so should be available. Most safety critical equipment was repaired/supplied by the manufacturer. Battery chargers may present an issue as they were repaired in house at Chester but then were outsourced to TPS when Chester`s repair bay facility was wound down.
There was an absolute huge amount of 175 spares held at Chester and when they were removed I think they were taken to Wincanton to join the remainder of the slower moving 175 spares that were held there.

Would I be correct in thinking that Wincanton is a typo for Canton? ;)

Either Canton or if the word starts with a W, perhaps Wolverton? Wincanton hasn't had a railway since 1966
