Really suprised that FWOE has an average of 9 years old for it's fleet given all the B9TL's still knocking about!

Bath bus company is the scheduled services in Bath and to north Somerset, west Wiltshire and Bristol. It has a depot on Weston island between river Avon and canal
This is not correct, as that comes under First West of England. BBC was the A4 and tootbus only.

Wondering on the distinction between Bath Bus Company and Tootbus (both ex-RATP). Aren't the Toot vehicles Bath Bus Co?
First have acquired both 'Bath Bus Company Ltd' (i.e. the Keynsham operation, providing the A4 service and the sightseeing tours - branded as Tootbus) and 'The Original London Sightseeing Tour Ltd' (i.e. the Wandsworth depot, who provide sightseeing operations in London - also under the brand name 'Tootbus'); Tootbus is really just a shared brand that the two companies use - and I expect it will disappear entirely post integration.

The majority of First's Bath operations come under the First West of England banner. Their average age is brought down by the influx of new electric vehicles in Hengrove and Weston, whilst the Bath and Wells depots especially have a much older fleet. To answer @nick291, the 100 old B9TLs are effectively balanced out by the 100 virtually brand new Yutongs.

The BBC is the former RATP Bath operations and would imagine that the age profile is adversely impacted by the relatively young Air Decker fleet (about 7-8 years old on average) being balanced out by older open toppers trundling around Bath.

In case I’ve caused confusion by using a mix of legal names and public facing names - What is shown as ‘Bath Bus Company’ is the Bath TootBus and Air Decker operation. ‘Toot Bus’ is the London operation.

Surly the avg fleet age for First is lower than 9 since some of the operations are mainly coach/tour/school work?

A really interesting list

Obviously some of the operating areas hide a great local variation (e.g. Leeds vs rest of West Yorkshire), but that's the way that First are set up, same with places that include a lot of school work

Glasgow really doesn't look as bad as the locals believe

If the Cornish operation had closed say fifteen years ago, I might have joked about the danger of their ancient cast offs being dumped on the relatively young urban operations here in South Yorkshire

Instead, Kernow has a lot of relatively young fleet, whilst the glut of 07/08/58 plated stuff is still on daily service round here, so I'd actively welcome any second hand stuff!

That said, maybe we'll see a version of this list in say 2030 and we'll see whether York/ Leicester etc have continued to see regular investment or if they have retained the bulk of the current fleet which is now slowly ageing
What will be interesting to see if in years to come the age of a bus will really matter?

With the race to electric will we see the likes of the Leicester/Norwich fleets cascaded away in 10 years time? Or will it simply be refurbishments and continue. Likewise the newpower streetdecks will already be 10 years old this year.

Usually the concern over a vehicles age is mainly down to the emissions… when that isn’t a thing anymore what are we expecting the average life cycle of a bus to be?

All the new electrics will have brought the average age down (and i don't think the gas buses are that old yet either - maybe 6?).

The ex-HCT ones (393xx) are on 68 plates. The native First ones (39402+) are on 69 & 20.

In York First haven't done a huge amount of refurbs in the 18 years I've been here - just run buses into the ground until replacements (normally cascades to normal service off P&R after contract renewal). This only changed with the gov funded electrics a year or two ago.

I'm doubtful that will change especially with the contempt they have for the normal services compared to the P&R + Uni contracts.

Bradford hasn't had much for many years. It was probably because a) Bradford isn't the strong territory it used to be, b) First had commitments to Leeds in terms of new buses as part of the partnership agreement that was a factor in c) the aborted clean air zone.

To be fair Huddersfield has done quite well for newer buses lately with loads of streetlites brought in including some that were only a few years old from Solent

York seems to be feast or famine. In about 2000, First York had a complete fleet replacement, every single bus they had – from the nearly new SPD Darts to the much more numerous elderly Leylands – was either scrapped or redeployed, and a brand new fleet introduced. That was fine for a while and then as the fleet needs changed over time and eventually those buses reached end of life, they muddled along with second-hand buses being brought in from elsewhere, and only the P&R getting any new buses, and the rest of the fleet getting older and older, until a couple of years ago when they got rid of all the diesel buses and replaced them with brand new electrics.

Just a hunch, but I suspect that there will be no urgency to order new vehicles for the two Yorkshire areas as they’re heading towards franchising.

Glasgow really doesn't look as bad as the locals believe
Perhaps it’s a perception that FGlasgow is one of the cash cows of the overall group, and “high” fares which are in part subsidising other companies within the group? Against the background of possible future franchising, there’s also amplified focus on eg pulling the X1? Hamilton express, yet JMB can make it work. Generates negative press for First and criticisms they are slightly “remote” in their management.

Add to that McGills have invested very heavily in new buses, highly visible in the city centre and elsewhere although that will even itself out in terms of vehicle age in the coming years. And as ever with the owners (Easdales) you’re never quite sure what’s real and what’s not, they like to see themselves as “billionaires” yet there’s never any facts to back that up. They’ve also donated money to Labour in Scotland, which is curious given labours support for franchising yet the Easdales public hatred of the very idea. Curious.

But I’m drifting off topic…

Indeed. And relevant to that as part of "Project Reset" (yet another reorg) it was announced internally yesterday that West and South Yorkshire, together with GM, South Wales and Midlands are to form a new Franchised Operations business unit.

They say perception is truth (but it's never quite and perception from whom) and it is clearly one of the cash cow operations. However, it (average age) is significantly lower than many other ops and that's because they have put a lot of new vehicles into Glasgow between 2019 and 2023 - probably more than anywhere else?

Some of the results on the list are skewed with smaller opcos getting a disproportionate level of investment off the back of ZEBRA funding (e.g. Leicester, Somerset), or in the case of Kernow, having such a fleet reduction that most of the old fleet was either disposed of or sent for schools work in some coach ops.

Perhaps if they have donated, they might believe that they have some influence... just a thought!

Another reorg - doesn't seem that long (checked - it was April) that they created the B2G business unit, along with B2B for non-franchised ops and B2C for contracts (e.g. Flixbus, coaching).

Is London in the Franchised Ops BU? Mention of Midlands is a little odd as Worcester and Leicester are not in scope for franchising... Assume this mention relates more to any potential West Midlands work that they may gain in due course, but then why not Liverpool?

Ah well, it is First...

Without knowing anything about First's structures, or what was announced recently, the "Franchised Operations" business unit sounds exactly like the B2G ("Business to Government") as mentioned on Roger French's blog last year - the details of which were:

In plain English these are Business to Business (ie coaching and contract operations) headed by Andrew Jarvis; Business to Customer headed by Colin Brown and Business to Government (ie franchised areas) headed by Gary Hitchmough (who’s the current lead on bidding and development). All First’s local commercial teams based in regional bus companies are being made redundant with all commercial decision making now centralised at First Bus head office. Regional companies will be allocated to Andrew (Aircoach, Ensign, coach businesses and First Travel Solutions); Colin (South, East and West and Wales and eventually Scotland) and Gary taking those areas for franchising (Manchester, Midlands and the Yorkshires). Regional bus companies will just be delivery units with no commercial decision making.

The one difference is Wales being in Franchise, but hey, it should be expected that areas will move between the teams as situations change.

Given the blog stated were making redundancies, there would have been all the statutory consultation periods and things like that, notice periods to be worked out and all that other stuff. So was anything new announced this week, or simply that they've moved into implementation of a previously announced new structure?

They said at the half year results that they had done better profits than expected due to passenger numbers tailing off, one of the two things mentioned as being the cause was a management restructuring.

The annoying thing is I saw the list and now can't find it. However, what I can say for definite is that Wales was on it but Liverpool wasn't. Maybe they haven't actually bid for anything there! I'm not surprised London isn't part of it - groups who have tried to run their London operations on a remote corporate basis have never done well as a result.

No, this a completely new structure under "Project Reset" only announced yesterday. No MDs - instead three Regional Directors with Service Delivery Directors reporting to them. For example, Doug Claringbold is to be the Regional Director South and West, looking after the "markets" of Bristol, Bath & N Somerset, Somerset, Dorset, Portsmouth and Bershire. In other words the current First Bus South plus First Bus West of England. There are two Service Delivery Directors under him, one for West of England and the other for "South".

The current MD of First Bus South, Simon Goff, is a casualty among others and apparently leaves shortly.

Sorry, can't post any actual info. It all came my way in fuzzy screenshots.

After yesterday’s failed coup to depose of Starmer, which probably seals Labour’s fate in Scotland come May, they might be asking for their money back :D

With First Kernow finishing up at the end of the week, do we have any indication as to where the fleet is being redeployed to?

With the very E400MMC heavy fleet I’d expect a number of these to head to Essex. Perhaps the 12 plate Volvos to Eastern Counties to replace a lot of the 58 plate stock on the coastal routes.

There was talk that a few of the Kernow mmcs may head there to replace the elderly B9s. Apart from that, it will have to make do with cascades.

It's been mentioned elsewhere that the mmc and Solo fleet is most likely to head to Glasgow.

West of England is still struggling by with over 100 B9s in the 2007-9 bracket but think new vehicles are destined to purge many of those.

To quote Dilbert. Whoa, I'll go get my re-org boots.

Deckchairs on the Titanic?

British Bus did a constant shuffling of things, making it difficult to properly compare things year on year to see how the business was actually performing.
