Although they work crossings they have been to signal school unlike grade 1 and some grade 2 and aren't classed as crossing keepers

Hi folks, any idea when they may be taking on Signallers south scotland, Carlisle area?

Had interview last year but couldn’t go due to being on holiday so missed out, not seen any advertised since.

Hi all, hoping some of you can help with something.
Has anyone here had their box/panel upgraded recently?
We are going through the process at mine currently and I’m trying to gather information regarding any back pay arrangements that have been offered.

When I've had an upgrade, back pay has applied from the date of submission for the regrade.

Recently went through a successful upgrade, backpay applicable from the date of first submission.

Thank you, we think they are going to try to get out of paying backpay because it’s been two years since it was originally applied for (NWR caused the delays) and it’s a substantial sum that would be owed!

Unfortunately for south of Scotland there potentially won't be any advertised until maybe the end of the year. However that would be dependent on people moving area or leaving.

We are currently hiring but it's from the existing pool of signallers from the last round of interviews.

I've had at least 18 months back pay from a regrade at one point so it is possible and does happen.

So after giving up hope of ever getting a call during my 12 month talent bank, today it happened, I got the call offering me G9 for Edinburgh, with IST sometime next summer.

Absolutely over the moon, anyone in talent banks, dont give up hope.
How long were you sat in the talent pool for? I’ve just made it into the Basingstoke ROC pool, but although it’s an efficient way to recruit with having number of people ready for potential upcoming vacancies, I was wondering how realistic it is to ever expect that call.

How do they choose who to contact from the talent pool, especially if six or seven have gone into it on exactly the same date? Is it almost like picking a name from the hat?

I realise a few will move on in life if they don’t hear within a few months.

Just for all those in the telnet pool don’t ever give up hope. I interviewed last may, passed everything, placed in the talent pool in June. 8 months passed and almost forgot about it and gave up hope, accepting it’ll never happen, the ship has sailed. Much to my surprise I received a call this morning out the blue offering me a position starting 27th April. It does happen !!

Congratulations on having had that call, and getting a start date. Do you know yet where your IST will be held?

Out of interest, anyone know why the place in the talent pool is only for 12 months duration?

Thank you, I honestly had given up hope and wasn’t at all expecting the call after so long! My IST is held in York. As for the 12 month duration I’m not entirely sure.

I interviewed in March 2025
placed in talent pool 1 week later, got the call mid December informing me of conditional offer.
Had medical on January, now waiting for start date (mines was supposed to be April time, but i have a family holiday pre-booked, so moving start date to August 2026, or sooner if places available).
My IST will be Shettleston, Glasgow. Unless i happen to get a place else where within the UK for a sooner course.

Congratulations to you as well!

I wonder if there are some who never get a call and fall off the talent pool conveyer belt, which would be mightily disappointing.

Hi. Getting mixed answers depending on who I ask. If you are going from resident to relief, is there a definitive answer to when you should start getting your flexi premium? Some have said right away, others have had to pass out multiple locations. Is there a document that sets this out? I’ve had no luck searching on Connect
Thanks

I think for a relief you have to have passed out minimum of 2 of the boxes/panels/workstations that you will be covering but I'm not 100% sure.

You would have to pass out in a minimum of two locations. Transferring from resident to relief means you already have one location under your belt. Therefore passing out in a second location should ensure FP is paid. If not take the matter up with management.

There seems to be an indifferent approach from some resources managers about the correct application of this.

There was a reference in the Ops Deal 2023 pages on MyConnect that refers to keeping people "off the base roster until full required competency is achieved". However, that is talking more from the point of view of a new starter after completing IST.

Doesn't the Green Book say "Old rate of pay plus old Flex premium" or "Old rate of pay plus new flex premium" - whichever is higher....??? Most adverts until very recently would quote this.

So, if you are going Grade 5 resident (with no FP) to say Grade 6 relief with FP: You would stay at Grade 5 but get the flexibility premium - unless of course you have already passed out in one of the Grade 6 boxes/panels in which case as some have suggested you would go straight to Grade 6 plus the FP...

Unless somewhere the Green Book has been superseded?

(Presumably the rationale being that you are now training at a new box/panel but are already qualified at another location - hence you are already flexible as you can go between two locations from day 1. And when you then also pass out on the higher grade location you should be fully remunerated.)

Yes, it does. I don’t have a copy to hand though. I believe it was also referenced in the various restructuring agreements for signallers (the Green Book incorporates those agreements). That still doesn't stop some managers from 'trying it on'.

Sorry, poorly phrased in my original post - I've taken that wording directly from the copy I have

Hi,

I'm a relief signaller and didn't get my fp until passed out of my second box. I've not seen any documents about it.
Cheers

Odd question but I can’t find much info about it anywhere including the NRP , but if I’m currently a relief and have requested to go onto a resident link when one permanently comes up am I the next person in line Aslong as I’ve requested this before anyone else?

Would you not have to interview for the position? I think there is a view that to just slot you into the role denies someone else an opportunity??
