(17:53): The fault appears to have transferred to the rescue unit. Fitters on site are working on it.

Must be bad if Traction Interlock and Emergency Bypass switches wouldn’t release the brakes! Sprinters have a retractable electrical coupling to prevent transference, do 175s?

Years ago the underground used presspans whatever that is to prevent electrics transferring between tube trains.

Units are still at Liskeard. Current plan is to shunt them onto the Looe branch cord to get the Down Main clear which has been blocked for 6 hours now, with the Up Main also blocked for a lot of that time as well.

Im starting to think my sarcastic comment about the 08 coming out to play may have more truth in it than i thought...

Maybe Cornwall needs more Thunderbird locos available for events like this, something that presumably was a thing back when there was more china clay freight.

is a cl 175 the only thing in the South West that can attach to/ rescue another cl 175 unit ?

Yes. However I have met many drivers who don't know how to do it. It's not something I've ever been taught how to do and I worked out how to do it myself.

I've never worked with a coupler that does not have this ability.

Unable to release brakes this time apparently.

Door interlock issues again which 002 appears to have suffered recently? without the full circumstances it is just a stab in the dark to come up with a possible reason and could be no brake release on just 1 particular bogie, 1 car or the whole unit and each fault would be a different scenario in the reason for the issue.
I assume that unit does not reverse at Liskeard as a change of direction fault will also cause no brake release.

175`s do have various isolation switches available in the cab on the isolation panel but depending on the root cause of the issue they may not be effective e.g if a BCU - Brake Control Unit, which there a 4 of across a 2 car, or its wiring has failed then the forced brake release command will never work.
Also we don`t know if it has no brake release at all or a partial brake release ?

175`s are only able to couple to a 180 or a adapted loco or or something similar.

There is a coupling adapter that enables them to couple to any locomotive. I've driven a couple of types of train that carry one as part of the on-train equipment.

175`s electrical head is air operated and can be isolated using an isolation cock near to the coupler to prevent it engaging with the rescue unit when coupling to prevent transfer of any faults but then the rescue unit has no control over the failed unit with the failed units brakes then having to be isolated on each brake frame and the parking brake emergency brake release levers pulled for the units then to move.
Problem then arises that 002 is now a "swinger" and 011 would then not have the braking capacity for both units, cant remember the calculation for swingers and rescue unit brake force.
Whether the rule book allows this type of move to happen in an emergency at very low speed and a very short distance I wouldn`t know.

Been shunted into the start of the Looe branch, 175011 was the rescue unit. Both have seemingly been parked up for the night. Apparently 002's brakes are still very much applied!

002`s brakes must have been isolated to carry out the move as 011 would not have been able to drag 002 with its brakes applied.

175`s carry, in the cabs 2nd mans side cupboard, air supply hoses for locomotive connection.
There is also a switch on the cab isolation panel "Rescue by Loco" for this scenario.

1 swinger for every 4 braked vehicles and the train can proceed at 10mph below line speed. (Known as the 1 in 5 rule).

If the train doesn't meet this then it can proceed at what the staff on site seem a safe speed, generally just to get it off the mainline

There must either be an adapter on the train or at strategic locations around the network then!

At one of my previous TOCs they took them off the trains and started keeping them in depots and large stations. The reason for this is as they are only certified for a single use, and are expensive to replace!

Thanks for the swinger clarification.

There are no coupling adapters carried on 175`s only the loco adapter air hoses.
I have never seen a coupler adapter at Chester depot either.

I did wonder about it when making my post - I'm more familiar with a 175s bigger brother where there is more space for these things.

Operationally it seems bizarre that they've got a small fleet running around that can only couple to itself and no adapters... But not surprised.

180`s, the bigger brother, are not my thing :)

Couple to itself and 180`s but they will never be close enough or available to be used in such circumstances.

It is extremely rare that a 175 cannot be rescued by another 175.

There are many surprises that 175`s can conjure up, especially if not familiar with the unit and that includes train crew and maintenance staff but they will get to grips with them for sure. I think that they just need a little guidance to get going

About 15 years ago I came across a very secretive oddball tasked by ATOC to produce a national ETCS plan for rolling stock He advocated doing Devon & Cornwall last, filling it with never-fitted units as a ‘nature reserve’. I wonder……

There’s a coupler adaptor at Laira they fit to an 08 to drag 175’s around the depot.

The older trains were so much simpler, even the HST's. Software that allows one faulty door to mess up all the rest and affect another unit as well, is just plain daft and incompetence by the designers.

How were universal couplings allowed to be ditched as well, no integration in privatisation. Ridiculous way to run a railway.
