London North Eastern Railway (LNER) First Class service

New timetable for me: we have a 1930 and a 2003 from London to Edinburgh. First, is this true (I’m thrilled if it is) and second, I believe the offering is the Dish, but are the trains busy? I need to book a trip in March.

Background - I’ve always thought that an 8 pm ex London to Ed was a sleeper-killer, which it probably is for me (at least to Ed, I am sometimes on the Highlander too) - just wanted to check it’s real!
Trains 1900 and later are Dish.

No Signature available on KGX-LDS 0910 today. "No chef available"... was looking forward to a cooked breakfast. Bit annoying on top of the lounge closed for refurb.

The staff are enjoying a nice big scrambled egg and bacon and avocado plate though which is nice for them... :s

Bacon roll was decent though. Staff incredibly efficient as usual. Served most people coffee/water/bacon in under 10 minutes of departure time!

edit: also a gaggle of staff in the through-galley were loudly nattering away almost the entire trip. Last time I select a seat there again...

Edit2: sat in the lounge in Leeds and again have to listen to staff moaning about their employer and job...

Can't believe Kings Cross is getting *another* refurb whilst they still can't sort out the WiFi at Leeds

Did a Kings Cross-Edinburgh First class return on Monday 26th Jan, out on the 09.30 KingsCross-Edinburgh(Signature), then the 18.00 Edinburgh-KingsCross(Dish). The outbound LNER Full English was really nice and tasty, with several rounds of drinks, then on the return 18.00 Edinburgh-KingsCross, as was pretty quiet, managed to bag 2 meals, the Tangine and Croque Monsieur, which were both very tasty, and copious rounds of drinks etc. Look forward to trying both again on next trip.

So, my first trip on LNER for some months; I chose trains with Signature service - they both happened to be Mk4s too :)

0717 Friday 30th Jan Shipley-KGX was uneventful, though I was startled to find breakfast served immediately rather than after Wakefield (not complaining, just unexpected). Breakfast itself was as advertised, refills of coffee were offered 3x, arrival at KGX just early by the public timetable.

1739 Tuesday 3rd Feb:
I chose the mushroom pie which was nice, but the portion of champ mash was disproportionately minuscule, and the treacle sponge and custard was good; thr whole was nicely satisfying and service was friendly and efficient.
Sadly the preceding GC service encountered a member of the public north of Retford with, I presume, tragic results and it took a full 3hr to move the set. Our crew were excellent in offering information, snacks and drinks (I thought it wise to turn down the 4th glass of red); a RRB from Peterborough took a few of us forward to Newark - arriving just in time to record the 1739 :) - but I think about half the passengers had baled at Grantham and made other arrangements.
Arrival at Leeds in the end was +220, nearly a record for me, but connections were held and the TM had been promising taxis to those who needed them. Even the automated Delay Repay worked.
So not the most delightful trip but every credit to the crew. Must offer proper feedback.....now done.

I also had to suffer watching rail staff enjoy catering that they told me was unavailable on XC last week (I was told I couldn't have tea or biscuits in case I burned myself or choked and held the TOC responsible!)... I've made a thread to discuss that in more detail.

I'd definitely complain if this genuinely happened. Sounds very unprofessional to me.

Are LNER staff allowed to help themselves to the First Class food? Maybe they'd been given specific permission to do so because of the lack of Chef so it wasn't wasted? (Although having said that if they were helping themselves to Bacon, they could have offered you extra Bacon/ a second Bacon Roll to compensate for the lack of full cooked Breakfast.)

It absolutely did happen and I did submit a complaint but like every organisation in the UK these days complaining changes absolutely nothing

Edit:

It was on a 225 with that through galley and I was sat right next to it. I could see what they were eating (and hear everything from their Christmas party plans to beauty tips)

And nope no extra bacon offered. Even asking for biscuits got a bit of an eye roll

Must have been a London crew. In my experience, the Leeds crews always go above and beyond to the best of their ability.

Anyone else want to cross
-examine what happened to check I didn't make it up? LOL
I put it to you @Angmering1974, that it was not, in fact, the LNER staff that ate all the breakfasts but it was in realty you! You ate the breakfasts! And then not content with that you attempted to slander innocent third parties! ;)

In your defence, I am a bit of a porker :D

(Lost 12kg though in no small part thanks to LNER and TPE first class ;)

I was very pleased with the service received travelling from York to Newcastle yesterday morning.
Although the booked journey time was 65 minutes, as I travelled on a Newcastle terminating service I was expecting the full menu offering to not be available as they will be packing everything up before terminating.
However, I was able to get the Full LNER which was served promptly along with 2 full drinks trolly offerings passing through within 40 minutes.
They also served another passenger joining late in the journey a hot drink in a takeaway cup with biscuits after the proper service had finished.

I’m booked on the 10.03 from Kings Cross (as far as York) tomorrow. Final day of All Line Rover. This is shown as signature menu. Does anyone know if they’ll be serving the full breakfast or is the menu only lunch?

That one is signature breakfast as far as Edinburgh and then changes to Dish PM north of Edinburgh so you’ll be grand. Subject to all the usual caveats etc

...and we're back to the old problem of the reality differing from what's advertised. A quick check for a first class ticket on that train from Edinburgh to Dundee shows the signature menu being offered.

On weekdays it's signature menu with an Edinburgh crew to Newcastle then a Newcastle crew thereafter.

Nice full breakfast which got offered as soon as boarded at Alnmouth, asked for no beans but served with it and he couldnt have been more apologetic, lovely service with the person doing the drinks to
BUT
on comes a new crew at Newcastle and being served with drinks with someone who has is going round very brusque and has a face like a slapped arse, never seen someone in such a foul mood

I had the same experience recently.

Absolutely fantastic Edinburgh based staff (and I passed that on via social media) but not particularly nice Newcastle based staff unfortunately

I enjoyed an excellent breakfast on the 10.03 from Kings Cross to York yesterday. Good to have a full breakfast service at this time going north. Still available after Newcastle too.

Was Edinburgh (South Sub) but more Strathspey now.
Decent food and service on the 1330 ex EDB on Wednesday and the 2003 back from KGX the following evening. Chicken tagine looks small but is great with a decent quantity of meat. The croque (which I tried on another occasion) is also generously sized.

The FC lounge at both stations was closed, I assume temporarily.

I do like having a train as late as 2003 back North. I see there is a Lumo even later, though it’s not an alternative to FC, of course.

With the much-more-comfortable standard-class seats, decent legroom and small number of stops, it covers off a lot of my reasons for getting LNER first class. Pop me in a window seat with a Waitrose meal deal and a 4-pack and I'm fine. Much cheaper and avoids any anxiety over whether the staff can be bothered or not.

Edinburgh First Class Lounge is temporarily closed due to unforeseen maintenance - https://www.lner.co.uk/first-class-travel/lounges/edinburgh-waverley/

London Kings Cross First Class Lounge is closed for refurbishment until Spring 2026 - https://www.lner.co.uk/first-class-travel/lounges/london-kings-cross/

Not great that the lounges at both ends of their flagship route have ended up closed at the same time tbh
