On a recent thread discussing DB Cargo 66s, I posted a complete list of the liveries carried currently by 66001-66250. I figured I'd expand this list further to cover all the other 59s and 66s, and, well, got carried away a bit and decided to include various other aspects of the two classes, covering all locomotives that have been based in the UK. I have split this up into several sections, these being:

• Operators
• Naming
• Plaques
• Renumberings
• Liveries
• Imports & Exports
• Scrapped Locomotives

And hopefully you'll somehow find my endless ramblings useful :)

Operators
This section details the current operator of each Class 59 and 66. To keep the list simple and avoid any confusion over locomotives carrying the same number, the most recent/current UK number is used in preference to the numbers carried by some of these locomotives abroad.

Naming
This list covers all of the names, past and present, carried by a Class 59 or 66. The name here will be paired with the number the locomotive carried at the time, for instance both 66058 and 66783 are listed here with two different names, but both are the same locomotive. In cases where a locomotive has carried one (or more) names whilst carrying the same number, the first name will be listed first. The same number will appear again directly below with the next name, and same and same again.

*Denotes a locomotive carrying a different name on each side. These names will be shown as such: Name 1 / Name 2.

Plaques
Some locomotives, around their nameplates, carry plaques. These are generally an explanation of the name, or sometimes just a logo, or commemorative, and each of these plaques is written out in full below. Numbering system used is the same as the 'Naming' section above, just the number used when the plaque was attached to the locomotive, and the plaque's location is also shown.

Renumberings
This section covers all of the renumberings of Class 59s and 66s, including those both exported and imported to and from the UK, but not including those that have never been based in the UK. The locomotives listed here have their first number on the left, followed by the next number they carried, and so on so forth. Furthermore, the number 66734 was used twice in the UK, the first locomotive was scrapped in 2012, and a 'new' 66734 was created several years later. I have differentiated these two, with the first locomotive having (I) after the number, and the second having (II).

*Denotes a number not used in the UK, but one used abroad.

Liveries
This list details each livery carried by a Class 66, again including ones that have been exported or imported, but not including those never based in the UK. For simplicity, the numbering here uses the last/most recent UK number, so for instance 66008 is not shown, but is actually 66780 instead, whilst 66582 is shown, though it is presently carrying the number 66009 abroad.

Exports: 66014, 66022, 66029, 66033, 66036, 66038, 66042, 66045, 66049, 66052, 66062, 66064, 66071-66072, 66123, 66146, 66153, 66157, 66159, 66163, 66166, 66173, 66178, 66180, 66189, 66191, 66193, 66195-66196, 66201-66204, 66208-66220, 66222-66223, 66225-66229, 66231-66237, 66239-66243, 66245-66249, 66411-66412, 66417, 66526-66527, 66529-66530, 66535, 66582-66584, 66586, 66595, 66599, 66608-66609, 66611-66612, 66624-66625, & 66954-66956

Some locomotives arrived new in the UK, before being exported to Europe, and then later returned. These locomotives are: 66010, 66026, 66028, 66032, 66073, 66179, 66190, 66205, 66224, & 66244

Scrapped Locomotives
Hundreds of Class 66s continue to operate across the UK. However, some have also been scrapped, so far just due to accident damage.

2001 - 66521
2012 - 66734 (I)

Your next challenge is to split the “Freightliner” fleet out as Heavy Haul and Intermodal are separated ahead of Intermodal’s sale to CMA CGM.

That’s a very useful list, thanks for the work you’ve put into compiling this.

A couple of typos- 66755 Tont change to Tony

66798 is named Justine not 66797

In addition to the plaques, is there another challenge to list the non-standard nameplates? For example all the football club ones have curved nameplates with a football and a splash of the club colours underneath

Very interesting and clearly a labour of love - so hopefully suggesting some more labour is a good thing?!

Do the 66s have builder’s plates anywhere onboard? I’ve asked this question of both crew and maintainers but no-one knew.

Most of them were delivered with builders plates; later ones had a sticker instead. Many have been lost over the years, though.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know where these builder’s plates and stickers were attached?

Noting that 66602 has been sighted at Leeds Midland Road with white "Heavy Haul Rail" bodyside stickers on its debranded Freightliner green and yellow livery.
Updated :)

Labour of love and class 66 were 2 phrases I had never anticipated hearing together !! But an interesting compilation nonetheless.

Awesome list, thank you.

In terms of plaques, 66310’s nameplate also carries the crest for the SCOTTISH RAILWAY PRESERVATION SOCIETY.

cheers

Most Class 66s have lost their builders plates, they were attached to one cab side, one per side. Most of the alloy ones were stolen (in fact I beleive that ALL of the EWS ones were stolen and they sometimes come up on auction sites), Freightliner ones also probably stolen although their operating bases were more secure. EMD changed over to stickers at some stage, some of these were pulled off, often being broken in the process, leaving just part of the thing attached to the loco, while others have been painted or vinaled over. However, they do ALL have the makers number stamped on the underframe at one end on each side below the cab - right down on the bottom bar. Some of these are not stamped well and are difficult to read, some have been painted over and one or two have been covered in filler ! BUT, they are still there in most cases and can usulally be made out - it is North American law that all main line locomotives must be permanantly marked in this way, in order to trace their provinence. In addition to all this, those locomotives that have been imported from mainland Europe and are registered in Germany also carry a brass EBA plate, giving the German EBA registtation number. These seem to have been retained on all the imported locos that I have checked, presumably because they are still valid in case the loco ever goes back. The three from Norway/Sweden of course do NOT have these plates as they were never registered in Germany.

Thank-you for that comprehensive answer.

The move to builders stickers (with lots more information) was effectively a requirement US EPA emission control legalisation. Hence all ~2000 onwards US made/used locos have stickers like this (image grabbed from wikipedia as the first correct search result):

The loco serial numbers are in the format:
YYOOOO-xxx pre 2000
or
YYYYOOOO-xxx 2000 and afterwards

YY = year
YYYY = Year
OOOO = Order number - e.g. 1 batch of locomotives has 1 order number
xxx - the nth item in that order

e.g. EWS ordered 66s are 968702-1 to 968702-250
1996, order number 8702, item number in that order 1-250

The US example in the image below is 20046610-088 which is UP 8396

Thanks for the explanation regarding the format to look for.

Was there not another batch of imported 66s for GBRF which became 66747-66751 ? I seem to remember them running around in grey at first.

There were two batches. 66747-749 were imported in 2012 from Netherlands where they had never been used since delivery. 66750/751 were Beacon Rail locos imported from Germany separately in 2013.

As an aside, what's the story behind this, please? If a company is prepared to pay big money for assets like these (and proven reliable ones), why not use them?
