Engineering Works at Sheffield - Needless reversal?

This week's (2nd to 6th Feb 2026) engineering work north of Sheffield is causing the Cross-Country services to be diverted. Southbound, they go via Rotherham Central, Tinsley South Junction, and a reversal at Woodburn Junction, then Woodhouse and Beighton junctions.

However, the line from Masborough Junction to Beighton Junction is still open to traffic. Why are Cross-Country trains taking the convoluted route (with a reversal) rather than a more direct route?
