I have recorded two journeys in late 1975 and early 1976 on an 08.48 St.Pancras to Sheffield train that called at Wellingborough. There is no such train in the GBTT for May 1975 to May 1976 but there is a service shown in the following GBTT, commencing in May 1976. I presume that this service was introduced during the currency of the May 1975 timetable - is anybody able to confirm this, please?

Thank you.

I only have extracts from the 1975 Working TT to hand but there was 1E41, passing St Albans at 9:24am, which was an express to Sheffield, picking up only from Luton. Start time from St Pancras isn't in my extracts, but possibly circa 8:58 departure from there?

1E40 07:50 Saint Pancras to Sheffield pass 08/45.5 D315
1S68 08:00 Saint Pancras to Glasgow Central pass 08/52 D315
1P08 08:19 Saint Pancras to Derby arrives Wellingborough 09:29.5 D315
1E41 08:52 Saint Pancras to Sheffield pass 09/47.5

3/5/76 to 1/5/77
1E41 08:48 Saint Pancras to Sheffield arrives Wellingborough 09:45 D315

Doesn’t mean that 1E41 wasn’t altered during the 75-76 timetable, of course.

If I recall correctly there was a major revision of the MML timetable in October 1975.

The May 75 timetable had hourly fast trains from St Pancras to Sheffield alternating between the Derby and Nottingham (reverse) routes and running non stop to Leicester.

There was also an hourly semi fast service from St Pancras to either Nottingham or Derby. The two trains inter connected ar Leicester to provide hourly journey opportunities.
However as a cost saving measure the service was substantially revised.
Mostly the semi fast service was discontinued with a dmu running from Leicester to Nottingham or Derby.
The fast Sheffield trains had additional stops inserted at places like Wellingborough and Kettering.
It is possible you caught one of these trains

I can't give any details, but yes this fits exactly with my memory in general terms. Some 'fast' Sheffields also had Luton or Bedford stops inserted, I believe. This was the time of serious economic slow down under the Callaghan govt, and that October the MML lost its wonderful integrated service that had existed for 9 years (with tweaks) after the WCML electrification had taken all the Manchester fasts off the Midland.

Sadly, the semi-fasts outside the peak times were often only 30% full, IMX, especially the 4 (or 5?) per day Manchesters north of Derby. So the cuts were hard to criticise. I think things were only really restored when Midland Main Line introduced the 170s c 1997 (?) or so.

Thanks for the replies. I probably had the supplements to the 1975/76 GBTT 50 years ago but, like so much else, it has long since withered. Such is life.

Some of the semi-fasts ran on Sats. only to Leicester with the ECS then going empty to Derby. But with the DMU still running to Derby!
