Spt recruiting for 10 drivers. Fixed term.

Anyone understand the logic for this?

About SPT
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is the largest of Scotland’s seven regional transport partnerships. We run the Glasgow Subway, a host of specialist bus services and are responsible for delivering better public transport for all.
SPT is the proud custodian of the Glasgow Subway. Our services call at 15 stations, stretching across the West End and City Centre of Glasgow.

Over the next few years we will be making history with huge investments that will affect all areas of operations, from new trains to stations upgrades and local community support.

About the Role
As a member of the Subway Operations team, following successful completion of your training, you will be responsible for driving trains to schedule and in accordance with the Subway Rules. A key aspect of the role will be to ensure that Customer Service Standards are met at all times, ensuring the safety of the travelling public by observing all applicable signals, in particular the Automatic Train Operating equipment, taking the appropriate actions when failures or emergencies occur.
Please note, this position falls into the high risk category under the Alcohol and Drugs policy and therefore is subject to random & for-cause testing procedures.

No doubt because they're planning on going driverless and drivers have started leaving beforehand, hence these jobs being fixed term.

I think there's probably some doubt about that. Unless you have a source to confirm?

Go on then, give a plausible other reason for hiring 10 temporary drivers and put some doubt to it.

For one, maternity leave? Secondments to management positions?

Yes driverless is probably likely to be a key part of it, considering it is due to occur 2026/2027 and this is likely to be a buffer of some sort in event of delay and natural wastage that wasn't previous filled.

Having seen a rota from a few years ago, which was 33 lines long, I think 10 of the drivers requiring maternity leave at once, unlikely.

Haha I would agree. But also filling around a 1/3 of drivers all at once, seems unable to be explained fully by a transition to driverless in the coming years. So I imagine there's a few factors, including potentially not keeping an eye on the ball for workforce planning.
