It is ridiculous to have 197’s stored because Machynlleth is not up and running to deal with them. So, the obvious thing to do would be to get Machynlleth up and running for the 197’s and move 158’s south to Canton for use on the Maesteg to Ebbw Vale run and the Cheltenham’s until such time that the FLIRTS can take over. This therefore frees up more 197’s for the mainline duties across the network.
Should the 158’s take over the Cheltenham’s, I really wonder if they could be extended to run Cheltenham to Bridgend via the Vale of Glam Coast Line? If that were possible, it would overcome the problem of terminating at Cardiff Central and help boost Cardiff Airport by having direct services to Rhoose from Cheltenham and Gloucester. (Such a direct service would also be popular in summer by encouraging people from Cheltenham & Gloucester to visit Barry Island via a change at Barry town station).
If enough FLIRTS were available, then surely one could operate Rhymney to Bridgend via the VOG coast line and therefore create the promised half hourly service which is desperately needed. This would also help with connectivity for services to / from west Wales via a change at Bridgend.
