701010 seems to be a bit of a rogue unit. Only eleven days in service since its first one a month ago. Three others have entered service more recentkly and racjked up twice as many days in service.
Came out today for the 0550 to Reading but failed at Staines. Does that count as a day in service?

Exactly so. The one fly in the (all suburban trains) 701 thinking that has crossed my mind, is the need for main line diversionary route knowledge for weekend engineering work, primarily via Chertsey. Basing depot has always played a large part in this, as the likes of Woking/Waterloo etc would not be able to cover everything on top of their own work.
Thus far a couple of Weybridge return trips have been covered by 450's worked by Basing for this very purpose.

To my mind it's completely unpracticable to train xx bodies at Basing on 701's (this is when someone with closer hands on tells me they are.. !) both in cost terms and in traction knowledge retention, unless there is a plan to 'pass' crews between, Basing and (eg) Woking to give them a greater degree of 701 work.

Otherwise with 450's still visiting Clapham Yard between the peaks (off main line work) it may be that some of these be used for a couple of return trips to Weybridge via Chertsey, for the benefit of Basing depot's retention of route knowledge?
Basingstoke will no longer sign Weybridge, having lost booked work on the route in December, with the plan soon being no 450s on the route.
They still sign the Byfleet Curve with the ECS runs mentioned above serving as route retention diagrams for Basingstoke crew.
Basingstoke did sign 455s up until I think 2019, so it's feasible that they could have signed 701s too, but there's no plan for it now.

I would imagine the outer area depots who will sign 701's will be Woking, Guildford, and (one link?) at Farnham?
All crew at all three of those depots are currently in the process of being trained. I believe Woking is quite a bit ahead of the other two in terms of drivers though, but Woking drivers no longer sign 455s unlike the other two depots.

There are four 450 empty workings for this purpose that run weekdays (from splits at London Waterloo)

Good point. They were introduced after my time, so easy to forget how things have moved on!

Makes sense. It was always the plan under SWT to remove all 450's from the suburban routes, but that never quite panned out.

All crew at all three of those depots are currently in the process of being trained.
Bit of a senior moment afraid ref my Farnham comment. Was thinking only of the peak hour Farnham/Aldershot-Waterloo's via Ascot (as was), forgetting that FN did/(do?) have a percentage of work on the 2C's throughout the day.

Only if it ran in passenger service, however briefly.
5Cxx doesn't count in my book.

RTT for Thursday shows 5C07 0550 Waterloo to Staines - unit not identified, and a separate 2C07 from Staines to Reading operated by 701026. The same unit ran ECS from Wimbledon CS to Waterloo as 5C07 (the usual ECS to operate the 0550) so i'm not sure where 701010 fits in to the picture.

I think it was Monday that 701010 failed at Staines on 2C07, not Thursday. On Thursday 2C07 was shown on journeycheck to start Staines due to a shortage of train crew off a VSTP 5C07 from Waterloo which in effect was 5C07 from Wimbledon extended to Staines. I presume this was due to no guard and was 701026.

Farnham do indeed still have a number of 2Cs, but also a few more 2F and 2G suburban services than they’ve had in years gone by as well. You can be easily forgiven though as previously they had two links where only Link 1 signed the Windsor side, but as the depot and its amount of work has expanded over the last 10 years or so, everyone now signs everything as there’s enough to go around.

Good to hear. Also gives Control a greater amount of flexibility on occasions when the s*** hits the fan. That's good news.

My apologies, I misread what it said on Live Rail Record. The failure at Staines was on Monday and it hasn't been seen since. However, 701039 is now allocated back out this afternoon.

Apologies if already mentioned somewhere but I've just seen 701042 back in service today following it's shoe gear incident at Queenstown Road.

Clapham Yard at 1100 today (Mon 26.01.26):
701528 + 701529 in their usual spot beside the cleaning shed.
701505 + 701504 now apparently coupled in the middle of the yard.
Elsewhere in the yard: 701024 701015 701038 701022
Training on 49 Road: 701002 - this returned to the main yard and went into the cleaning shed at about 1200, 701015 replacing it on the training on 49 road:
701001 and 701028 both appeared on 5Qxx ECS runs on the Windsor side, apparently testing rather than training going by the lack of staff on the train.
701006 (recent returnee to SWR) noted in the "New Sidings" at East Wimbledon at about 1330:
But the bigest surprise, 701056 in the up yard electrified sidings at WOKING. It was there all day, not clear if it is simply berthed between duties but it is unusual to see one there - or is it simply stabled out of the way, or failed ! (It is a service unit).

I suspect 701056 is the unit that should have worked the cancelled 2F82 which stables overnight in Woking Up Sidings

It seems there is a new 701 diagram today, on the Kingston Roundabout . 5K05 - 2K05 - 2O13 - 2K17 - 2O25 - 2K29 - 2O37 - 2K41 - 2O49 - 2K53 - 2O61 - 2K65 - 2O73 - 2K77

I think that means the entire roundabout service is now 701 operated, as well as the Shepperton route

Could this be the GBRF light loco for the next delivery from Long Marston.

https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:R30669/2026-01-27/detailed ?.

It is not a light loco from anywhere usual but from Bescot on Tuesday 27/01/2026.
Bit early but has no onward movements - yet.
It looks like the usual set of paths on Wednesday starting from Leicester:

Though as always probably worth looking at what is activated and allocated on the day.

That's an existing diagram (WM733) which looks a bit different today due to the cancellation of 5F82 - 2F82 at the start as above. You are correct the Kingston rounders on paper are all 701s during the week now along with Shepperton. Think it's been the case since the standard timetable started again after the engineering timetables stopped. Have been a few substitutes in that time so far.

Crew issues meant it has remained birthed. (lack of)

Good progress, each week taking one 701/0 back out from Long Marston, would be completed by mid February

It certainly was not all 701s in the build that started off with a smaller cab. If I remember correctly the need to change the design came about part way through the build of the 701/0s. At a very rough guess within twenty of the first 701/0s built. I am fairly certain the alteration was to move the cab bulkhead back into the coach. That is the wall separating the cab from the passenger compartment. Might sound fairly simple but I expect all sorts of electrical equipment would have also needed moving and that would have resulted in wiring looms not fitting and so needing altering.

I wonder if there are any drivers who can drive 455s that are not yet qualified to drive 701s ?.
(I assume none).

I also wonder if there are any drivers who can drive 450s/458s that are not yet qualified to drive 701s ?.
(I assume drivers based a long way out of London or who only work those longer routes will never need to learn 701s).
(I am thinking about the proportion of outer suburban drivers not yet qualified on 701s).

It is obvious from further up thread that nigh on 100% availability is required out of the 701s currently.

My take on comments above is that over the next month or so enough 701s will be accepted to allow 455s to no longer be needed as cover.
Then, beyond that, as more 701s get accepted training might well become the bottleneck. I remember back last year there was a point where a whole days diagram could not be crewed reliably so the number of 701s accepted rose faster than the number of 701s in use. I suppose we might soon be seeing the same issue effect another group of routes (outer suburban).
The cab size has not changed or been moved. There was a redesign of the cab desk, that’s all.

So not involving major work then ?.

Apologies, I have amended my post - I think its becoming an urban myth, it is stuck in my head.

The allocations for two of the test runs around the Hounslow loop today (28/01/2026) is interesting.

701504 is on:
5Q02 0928 Clapham Yard Sidings to London Waterloo
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:L77990/2026-01-28/detailed#allox_id=0

701503 is on:
5Q10 0936 Clapham Yard Sidings to London Waterloo
https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:Q74056/2026-01-28/detailed#allox_id=0

On Monday (26/01/2026) 701028 was on 5Q02, but 5Q10 didn't run. On Tuesday (27/01/2026), neither ran.

Does that mean that the 701/5 are going to be running in service soon, or are these two trips just a way of getting 701503 and 701504 to turn their wheels a bit more than just doing the attachment training in Clapham Yard?

It looks like the two 701/5 units then join together in platform 18 at Waterloo and then depart as the:
5Q45 1207 London Waterloo to Clapham Yard Sidings

Today’s Drag from LM has been activated
A good sign is the drag appears to have been manually activated judging by the time.
But I will wait and see how well the unit talks with 57306 and they get beyond Worcester before believing it is arriving today !.

Does anyone know which 701 (I assume one of 023, 045 or 049) ?.

could be 023 as the previous drags they tend to take the smaller number of units
