I quite fancy a day out to Eastleigh sometime in the next couple of weeks. I suppose the easiest way would be to get advance tickets, but I don't know which days I have off from work yet so that idea goes out the window.

So it's day trip, I don't mind changing trains at weird and wonderful places, not bothered about the route, the longer the better. But want a few hours in Eastleigh.

So what's the best way of splitting, don't mind using rovers either.

Slight change of plan.

I want to go down to Eastleigh then come back via Exeter letting me have a trip out to Barnstaple so I can complete all the track I need in Devon.

A rough plan gives me :

Wrexham General - Birmingham = 13.55 RTN
Hereford - Bristol = 14.65 RTN
Bristol - Eastleigh Single = 17.80
Eastleigh - Axminister = 19.10 Single
Devon Day Ranger = 6.60 (Covers me from Axminister, does the Barnstaple branch ect)
Tiverton Parkway - Bristol = 12.85

Grand total = 84.55 Can we get it any lower than that?

What about a 3 in 7 Freedom of Severn & Solent -£40 (£26.40) (you can not go to Devon but plenty of other trips available.)

Wrexham - Shrewsbury ...£9.00 (£5.95)
Shrewsbury - Hereford ....£18-40 (£12.15)
Hereford - Newport ...£17-00 (£11.20)
All above are SDR fares CDR fares are available in travelling later

Total £40 (£26.40) + £44-40 (£29.30) = £84-40 (£55.70)

Peter

(Prices after railcard discount in brackets.)

Thanks for that Peter I never knew that ranger existed , certainly sounds like better value for money.

I think he has a railcard so all prices are discounted by 34%. I've added those discounted prices to your post.

To the OP: Which railcard do you have?

Only had a brief look but savings can be made for the tickets after Bristol by doing this (all prices include railcard discount):

Bristol Temple Meads - Taunton
£7.25 CDR (Valid after 0930, valid via Westbury or direct)

Westbury - Eastleigh
£14.50 SVR (Valid on or after the 0850 departure from Westbury)

Taunton - Barnstaple
£9.70 CDR (Valid after 0900)

You cannot go via the West of England Mainline via Axminster between Eastleigh and Exeter. You need to go via Westbury and Taunton.)

Alternatively if you want to use the Devon Day Ranger then you can also do this:

Bristol Temple Meads - Taunton
£7.25 CDR (Valid after 0930, valid via Westbury or direct)

Westbury - Eastleigh
£14.50 SVR (Valid on or after the 0850 departure from Westbury)

Taunton - Tiverton Parkway
£5.70 CDR (Valid after 0900)

Devon Day Ranger
£6.60 (Valid after 0900, valid from Tiverton Parkway)

However this means that the train must stop at Tiverton Parkway.

If you have a 16-25 railcard, then beware that travelling before 1000 will incur a minimum fare of £12 per ticket after August. Otherwise the discount might vary.

It's a 16 -25 railcard that I have and it should be in August to avoid the minimum cost.

I've changed my plan a little bit after realizing that you can't really get down to Eastleigh, get to Exeter do the Barnstaple line and get back to Wrexham in a day.

So my plan is to get :

Wrexham - Hereford Ticket £17.70
Hereford - Newport £10.70
Freedom of Solvent and Severn 3 in 7 £26.40
Devon Day Ranger £6.60

Do the Line between Axeminister and Exeter, after going to Eastleigh, have a quick jaunt down the sea wall then head home to Wrexham.

Any ways of getting that cheaper than my above?

Which sea wall do you want? The one at Exmouth, or the one at Dawlish?

You could this for the part of your Journey from Wrexham to Newport (South Wales)

Wrexham General - Shrewsbury Anytime Day Return Route : Any Permitted £5.95

Wellington (Salop) - Abergavenny Off Peak Return Route : Shrewsbury, this fare is set by London Midland so take advantage of their 50% Sale up until 4th Sept this fare is £8.20. Valid after 0900 and also fine to start short at Shrewsbury

Abergavenny - Newport South Wales Anytime Day Return £5.70

total cost : £19.85 : a £7.85 saving of doing Wrexham - Hereford and Hereford - Newport

All Fares above quoted with 16-25 Railcard
