Priv on Caledonian Sleeper with a normal price passenger in same berth

Is the titled possible? I tried a sample booking on the RSTL site and it came up as more than booking 1x Priv and 1x Undiscounted Solo berth separately, is there a way to book with someone who doesn't have an RSTL leisure card into the same berth or will it always kick the discount out?

I was contemplating calling Caledonian Sleeper but I wanted to ask in case someone on here knows and has experienced the same scenario!

I don't think it's something you can get online.

What you can do is to buy a seated ticket for the non-Priv passenger online, and then to upgrade to dual occupancy of a room on the train. The upgrade fees were recently released in an FoI request (PDF attached). I believe the appropriate fee would be either £90 or £100.

Thank you, seems like a bizarre situation! If the seated ticket is more than £50/£60 then it would be cheaper for them to just get their own berth for around £150 instead of paying this upgrade fee plus seated ticket price!! The other bed in my PRIV cabin is there anyway so it's a shame Caledonian make it so difficult to book with someone without PRIV!

I may give them a call tomorrow and see what they say, if I can do the booking over the phone or the PRIV one on the RSTL site and then they can book the other person into my cabin over the phone maybe!

True, just mindful of the quota on the PRIV sleeper tickets so I want to get it quick when it's released, which is easiest online, but yes I could buy mine and then go to a ticket office with the berth details and see if they can add someone into the same one. If it's a booking system limitation that you can't mix PRIV with non discounted they still might not be able to do it though, even at Euston where I expect they'd know how to!

I once tried doing this on Star when I worked in a booking office, my mate wanted to come, the system was having none of it, once I'd reserved the berth as a Solo, it goes down as booked, CS will probably be able to over-ride it though

Are you sure the non-priv passenger needs a seated ticket? I understood the £90 fee to be all you need.

Indeed I once joined someone who’d booked solo occupancy of a berth (at public rate), and paid a similar fee - though I recall it being closer to £50 (this was 2023) - having previously held no ticket at all.

That's a fair point, the PDF doesn't really clarify. If it including an underlying A to B ticket then it's not so bad.

Due to the pricing structure, it's not possible for a Priv holder and a non-Priv holder to book a shared cabin on the Caledonian Sleeper. This was documented on Knowledgebase but seems to have disappeared in a recent update.

You either need to book two Solo cabins or an undiscounted Twin Cabin.

I believe there's a restriction on Priv holders using the seated portion of the Caledonian Sleepers. Check the 'Where Can I Go' document on the RSTL website.

You'd need to buy at a Ticket Office, as RST Online won't let you book for two Priv holders at the same time.

Though as @Haywain notes, you can't book the Seated coach on the Caledonian Sleepers with a Priv discount.

It looks like what you can book on RST Online may depend on whether you're Safeguarded (i.e. joined prior to 1st April 1996) or not.

As Non-Safeguarded staff, it will only allow me to book for one person, and if I try to add another Priv as a second Railcard it gives a "Priv Discount card can be selected only once." message.

It lets you select two adults against the one card, but then doesn't let you select the relevant fare. So, I can get the same as displayed in the screenshot in post #14 but no further. As you say, it won't allow two adults with 'separate' Priv cards. Therefore I agree with you that @NoFaultFound needs to book in person at a station.

I managed to get 2 x non-safeguarded Privs in a shared cabin on the Caledonian Sleeper last year. I couldn't do it online but the ticket office managed it for easily. Luckily the clerk had booked sleepers before and knew what he was doing.
