In the near future I'm having a trip out on a Saturday from Grange Over Sands to Portsmouth Harbour with my 4 year old daughter.

On the North to South portion, I've got an Advance ticket which gives me specific trains and reservations as far as Euston, and an Underground journey. But the section from London to PMH doesn't provide me with a designated train or reservations, it is simply described as 'and connections'.
Time isn't a great issue to me on this trip -- which would be the 'nicer' route ?
Waterloo to PMH (journey time 90 odd minutes) or Victoria to PMH (journey time 2 hours).
Always assuming that I'm free to make the choice

On the way back, again on an advance, all trains are designated/seats reserved.

I would think that you would have to take the train that's detailed on the iteniary, i.e Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, although i could be wrong.

If the 'Route' also states
'and Connections' travel is
allowed on appropriate
connecting trains where shown
on the ticket(s) or other
valid travel itinerary.

Hello Sonic

looking at the tickets, its Advance Single GOS-PMH. Route +VWC & Connections. Validity as Advertised & there is no routing/itinerary from London to PMH.

infact on second thoughts. I would say it's valid via any route (although i will be corrected) from London - PMH as ive just looked at advance singles for a random date, and specified to travel via Three Bridges. And it gave me itinerary for GOS-PMH via Three Bridges with advance tickets.

We leave the glorious delights of Grange at 05.03 on the Saturday and whilst my online booking says Waterloo - PMH, my tickets make no mention.

Sooooooo, which is the more interesting route, if I have a choice.?

Well on the Southern Service you will pass Gatwick Airport, and run through the Arun Valley line, and along the coast at Chichester, personally if it was me i would take the Guildford Direct Route via Haselemere to PMH. :)

It is generally accepted that there is no restriction on which train(s) you can get for the connecting leg, especially given that you do not have a reservation. Note that break of journey is not permitted, though there is no restriction on how long it could take you to walk Euston-Waterloo, and nothing to stop you having a meal on the concourse. Debates regarding the restrictions on '& Connections' tickets have been covered extensively on this forum in recent months, a search may reveal some interesting topics if you'd like to learn more.
