I've got split tickets for a return trip to Portsmouth this week.
Booked to Portsmouth & Southsea, but been advised I'm better off using Fratton
Will the tickets allow me to enter/exit at Fratton?
Relevant tickets are
1) Evening out single from Southampton Central - Portsmouth & S or harbour (GWR)
2) Advance single from Portsmouth & Southsea - Basingstoke (SW trains)

thanks

Fratton is 30-40 minutes walk to Gunwharf and / or Southsea Promenade) area; similar to Southsea Albert Road, where the majority of independent shops, cafes and bars are.
I personally would not use Fratton; that area is not the nicest; at times it can feel rather intimidating to some people.

The Evening Out Single has no break of journey restriction, so using Fratton will be fine.
An advance ticket needs to be used as described, on a specific train between specific points. However it’s likely that you’ll be able to use it from Fratton, the guidance is to allow this when there is no intent to save money on fares, and it’s unlikely that an advance from Fratton would cost more.

Couldn't the OP simply use the Evening Out Single to travel the final leg from Fratton onward to Portsmouth and Southsea to legitimately start the Advance Single to Basingstoke from there?

Out and back are different days so that won't work in this case

from what you all say it looks like I'll be OK getting off at Fratton, but may have a problem getting back on there

I have been permitted to board at Fratton with a Portsmouth & Southsea to London advance ticket in the past. I didn't try the gates, I asked the staff for permission. I did state my (genuine) reason which was that the separately ticketed hovercraft from Ryde was late and the only way that I could catch my booked train was a quick taxi ride to Fratton. Whether they did me a favour or there was an acceptance policy, I don't know.
