Buying railcard off website advice

I want to buy a two together railcard.
Trainpal and trip.com have 10% off at present.

However when you buy the railcard from either you can only access via their app and not via usual railcard app.

Does this also mean I can never buy any train tickets from elsewhere and have to buy from trainpal or trip.com in view of railcard being stored on their app only?

No, definitely not! A railcard is a railcard. Once bought from one retailer, it's valid to use with Railcard discounted tickets from any retailer/ticket office/TVM.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the likes of TrainPal and Trip.com have some special offers which force you to make one purchase from them before the Railcard that you have already paid for is "activated".

I don't think they should be permitted to do this, but you can buy a cheap ticket from e.g. Lichfield City to Lichfield Trent Valley to work around it.

You are able to buy tickets with a two together railcard discount from any retailer and your railcard in the Trip.com / Trainpal app will be accepted when your ticket is inspected by a member of railway staff.

But you may have to buy one ticket from Trip.com / Trainpal initially to "activate" your railcard, which is a bit annoying. Others will know more.

Especially as the Railcard app might be a bit buggy when it comes to opening it up in areas of poor signal, but is a lot easier to find and display the railcard when you are asked for it by a member of staff

Open your railcard in the app before you leave the house. It will then stay visible all day whether you have signal or not.

That is far too sensible for some, when they open the app and look in horror when they see the railcard has expired when on the train

Despite the fact I should know better, I've obstinately persisted with buying my Railcard from Trip.com for the past I think three years - I allow myself to get sucked in by the discounted price, then later gently (or not so gently) chastise myself for having done so when trying to open up and navigate to display the Railcard through the myriad of nonsense the app jangles in front of you!

So with that experience I can say that I wouldn't recommend it, well in fact I'll just straight up say I don't recommend it - and TrainPal is a sister company of Trip.com and their app is similarly cr@p. All I can say in my defence is that I've never bought anything else from Trip.com (apart from an ultra-cheap train ticket so as to 'activate' the discounted Railcard purchase - said ticket being pettily fulfilled by and collected by TOD so as to inflict maximum financial detriment to them!).

The 'official', standalone Railcard app has had it's issues over the years (though nothing of late I don't think?). I don't recall coming across any reports of trouble with Digital Railcards purchased from and displayed within the Trainline app, ditto the TrainSplit app (the latter being the one I should really be using for my Railcard!).

Alas the Network Railcard is not part of the Clubcard offer.

I've got my family Railcard with Trip.com and have no problems. I'm a Diamond Member with them in terms of usage for trains, airline tickets & hotels.

There was a discount code floating about recently for half-price Railcards on the Ticketyboo app, not sure if it has expired yet.

I only had 5 weeks left on my Network Railcard and £17.50 is cheap enough to justify snapping another one up now.

I can confirm the Rail50 code on TicketyBoo app is still working as of 10 minutes ago.

Buy a plastic Two Together Railcard.
Put it in your wallet.
Use it to buy tickets for a year.
Show it when asked.

Honestly, it’s worth the extra cost to get away from the rubbish with “apps” and the like.

That’s what I do, for sure. It’s never invalid, it does not depend on an Internet connection, it’s incontrovertable and can’t be challenged. Worth £5 or whatever to me.

Not that anyone has ever asked for it ……

Absolutely - though as a precaution, taking a screenshot of the Railcard isn't a bad idea just in case one is struggling to get the app (whichever one it might be) to display said Railcard.

Although assuming the code can be made large enough to get scanned by the member of staff so the details can be checked it shouldn't matter (as the code will soon flag up if the railcard screenshot has been doctored with the date etc)

Yes, but I have never had a problem with internet signal.

I am sure if there was a signal problem, eventually it would get sorted. surely a guard wouldn't punish you if there was no wifi signal and being inside a metal container, it's possible mobile data wouldn't work .. but as I said, I've never had such a problem

From an IT / software architecture standpoint (though I claim no great expertise!), I think I'd trust the Trainline and Trainsplit apps more than the others - including, alas, the 'official', standalone Railcard app which has had its issues more than once (which have been well publicised on here). I've no experience of the Ticketyboo app though.

Under zero-pressure test conditions, I can retrieve my digital Railcard on the Tickityboo app while in Aeroplane Mode. (In fact it's easier to see where to go when in Aeroplane Mode, because you open the app and the option to view Railcard is the only thing that loads).
