Yellow painted footways at Truro

Noticed these yellow painted footways round a siding at Truro and wondered what was the significance of these.

They are designated walking routes for train crew or other authorised staff. Essentially safer than trudging through the ballast.

As above, they are made from GRP (and likely to be from Dura Composites). Eg, see the below link for more info.

I've noticed these appear in a few places on the Cross-City North, usually the walkways just lead to relay cabinets!

Chester Middle Yard has recently had similar furniture installed, with incredibly bright led strips down the walkway sides for good measure.

Excellent graphic. Fatalities were on their way down before the 1974 report, but I'm impressed by the continued decline as my view is each extra bit of decline is harder to achieve.

Every worker deserves and has the legal right to a safe workplace. I’m aware the Victorians didn’t follow this philosophy whilst building our network and lost hundreds of workers through accidents and negligence along the way.

I don’t think this an unreasonable cost!

Very small cost relatively, and we know depots historically were very dangerous places, still are (see Tysley incident).

Avoiding a few serious muscular skeletal injuries alone will pay it back.

I've noticed these appear in a few places on the Cross-City North, usually the walkways just lead to relay cabinets!

I suspect that they are used as covers for the troughs leading to the locs.
The drivers walkway on the east end of Bristol Temple Meads leading up to the train care depot at Barton Hill are used in that way. Trough lids are notorious in icy weather.

And I find them to be much better for walking on in slippery conditions than the more traditional materials.

If there isn't an adequate walking route in terms of surface and lighting the drivers H&S rep will be involved. This can and does lead to the routes being blacklisted if they are unsafe or not fixed in a reasonable amount of time.
It's not great walking on uneven and slippery ballast .

If this walking route is fairly new, is this associated with overnight stabling of GWR trains being introduced at Truro?

This is a short sdg used occasionally for stabling ‘on track’ machines, eg a Tamper.

Just wait til the dreaded ‘NR preferred’ buddleia bushes etc start growing through and in this walkway !

Reading TCD has recently had all its ‘old’* wooden walkways and crossing boards replaced with these new GRP walkways. As mentioned above it’s supposed to have a lot more ‘grip’ than the traditional materials.
