West Midlands Police have released a press statement. Site may take a while to load due to heavy traffic.

West Midlands Police have been dealing with disorder in Birmingham city centre, Wolverhampton city centre and West Bromwich town centre.
The disorder has been on a smaller scale today than was seen on Monday evening in Birmingham, and police have been working throughout the afternoon and evening to calm the situation and target the offenders in all three areas.
Police in Birmingham have been managing groups of people causing disorder in several areas within the city centre during the afternoon and the evening.
There have been some shops attacked, and there has also been a car set alight on Moor Street.
Police continue to tackle two groups in the city causing some issues. One of these has been moved out of the centre, the other are fragmenting. Officers are still on the ground tackling these offenders.
Contrary to rumours there have been no incidents at Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Numbers of people involved are estimated to be less than on Monday evening.
There was also some disorder in Kings Heath earlier this afternoon, with a group ending at the police station but this group dispersed. There was minor damage to one police vehicle.
In West Bromwich there were reports of a large group of people in the town centre this afternoon, who were dispersed. There is currently another large group in the town centre being managed by officers.
Earlier in the evening police in Wolverhampton responded to reports of a large group of people in the city centre.
The group caused some criminal damage to shops in the city centre, but these groups have now dispersed.
There are still pockets of disorder at St. Johns Retail Park which are being dealt with by local officers.
National Express are also stopping bus services in the West Midlands this evening from 9.30pm.
Police arrested 142 people on Monday evening. Several of these have been charged and detained to appear before the court tomorrow, with the majority remaining in custody pending decisions on charges.
These are broken down into violent disorder, burglaries, criminal damage and theft from stores, with isolated incidents of robberies and theft of motor vehicles.
Officers also executed 29 warrants during the day which resulted in seven arrests and a substantial amount of property stolen from last night being recovered.
In total we have arrested 43 people today in connection with the disorder.
The Casualty Reduction Bureau has also dealt with 224 calls from the public providing information about the disorder. A team of detectives are now reviewing the information provided with a view to identifying further offenders and bringing them to justice.
Police are also asking anybody with images or videos of the disorder taken on mobile phones or cameras to email them to officers. People can email directly to tellus@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk.

Their funding is cut so they can't stay in education and jobs are being cut (or at least youth unemployment is high) so they can't go to work. I've been lucky in that I've been able to work once, on a temporary contract for 18 months, otherwise I've not been given a job opportunity - employers prefer those older, who got the experience when times were good. Perhaps they shouldn't take up arms but it's just as naive to blame it on young people.

Most employers seem to prefer Eastern Europeans who work long hours for the minimum wage. Labour's uncontrolled immigration policy has a lot to answer for in this regard

Just heard on BBC News that someone in Manchester (I think) has 4 huge dogs, and if the rioters come to his shop, he'll let them loose. I wonder if anyone is thinking what I am thinking?...

Probably get put before the bench for assault knowing this crazy, broken country

I heard about that to. And I state that the reason this guy has the dogs is because he was left devastated when his shop was attacked the first time round, as yobs walked off into the night with his television and recording sets. The brain power of many of these rioters is doubtlessly very low, but if the site of a barking dog deters them (which is a reason why the Police also have them) then I fully endorse his actions. Perhaps if the dogs do catch a rioter they might just scare some sense into them.

I hope the Police have a safe night and hit these idiots good and proper.

The whole thing is an extreme example of what I always maintain. Too many people know their rights, not their responsibilities. And a whole industry has grown up, funded ultimately by the taxpayer, to re-enforce their views.

Just listening to some woman from the Odu Dua Housing association giving her tact approval for the behaviour of these ferral scum on BBC news tonight was an eye-opener in how these people manage to keep their sense of grievance and entitlement going, whilst ignoring their responsibilities.

Nothing that is done will ever be good enough, as there is a permanent industry in creating the feeling of victimisation.

Anything bad happens - it's always someone else's fault.

The one thing that a lot of commentators have got right (but not in the way they think) is that this is society reaping what it has sown.

But not in terms of oppressing anyone (which is what the usual suspects maintain), but in terms of allowing ANYBODY to try to market themselves as a special interest group and entitled to special consideration.

To tie it back to the trains, it is obvious when walking through doing tickets. At least two or three times a day (probably in numbers the same proportion of the general population that is looting), my colleagues and I have to deal with somebody who is in clear breach of the T&C, and who's basic argument is "The rules couldn't possibly apply to ME, I'm special". The tantrums and bluster that then takes place is a microcosm of how these people view their place in society and their responsibilities as a whole. When it occurs with a family, I sometimes just think "In ten years time, I'll be having the same argument with that kid", as it is obvious that the parent will not be bringing them up with any sense of right and wrong, or civic responsibility - and class has very little to do with it.

I have noticed some buses about tonight with 2 members of staff on them, seen the police helicopter flying overhead heading towards Bristol so there could be more trouble there.

I do have to admit we needs the police to take back the streets and not just the police the government needs to get its act togther, personally i think cameron boriss etc should have come back on sunday when we first had signs that there may be trouble, then again i dont think anyone has been prepared for this.

I will be keeping an eye out tonight and i know my neighbours are as well. One of my workmakes has a bus parked on his driveway (Bit of a squeeze but i cant blame him) as he is out on a early morning private hire duty going to newcastle.

i personally am saying to my boss tommorow if there is any trouble during the daytime in cardiff etc i will refuse to drive through some of these estates if i feel it is unsafe for myself and passengers.

If anything, immigration from Eastern European countries outside the EU got harder under Labour. I don't consider intra-EU movement as immigration as such.

90019 - your post about being a "young c*nt" was too long ago to trawl through and quote, but I feel generally the same, to an extent. I was an occasional nuisance when I was in my teens, not as bad as the hellraising you were getting up to (shouting at the odd dog-walker if they questioned our pyrotechnic stunts: we did it in the open fields in those days - fire-raising yes, but even we knew not to do it near anybody's house!) but I knew that if I was ever brought home in a polis car I would get a damn good drumming from my parents - far worse than anything the police could dish out, and I think this is where the problem lies.

It's all well not respecting the police, but when there's no other fear-factor from the parents thats when the trouble starts to arise, as per the latest series of events. Fortunately we were never on the scene long enough for a bobby to get a glimpse of us, it sure as hell improved our fitness

On a serious note, its been said on numerous occasions in various media that this trouble could filter its way up to Scotland. no evidence of that as of yet, there have been a few "scots don't sh*t on our doorstep" style social networking groups, but I daresay there are probably a few sects looking to cause riots up here for the sake of it.

Funny how Ken Livingstone told Sky News that back in his day 'getting a hangover' or 'being late with the fish and chips' was seen as seriously out of line, not charging around torching buildings.

And if you really want to see disgusting behavior, watch this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsRwwQJdKjE

Saw it on Sky News. The words that sprung from my mouth are not suitable for the forum.

I should point out that that's not me, it's someone else from a different forum. I'm definitely not that sort of person

I think it's relatively unlikely to spread to Scotland.
if it does, I think i'll need to keep an eye on the little c*nts from Pilton who occasionally come along my street and vandalise cars and things, I think some of them will have a field day if it starts up here.

Yes, but like facebook today, why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

Ahh my mistake! Apologies for tarring you as a hooligan

If it does kick off in the 'burgh, I'd like to hope (ever the optimist) that Lambert & Butler's finest have had a bit of notice to get their act together to deter/respond quickly to any such action. First sign of a torched Gregg's and they will be seriously peeved though :|

In places like Pilton, Muirhouse et al I suspect they'll be left to their own devices as normal.. I'd be seriously concerned for the wellbeing of my car if I lived in Wester Hailes right now thats for sure!

seems the MET are aksing retired officers to come back and give them a hand.

also it seems residents have taken up arms against these mobs:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/8691761/London-riots-residents-fight-back.html

Nice to see people from all communities, race etc working together to bring order.

Not sure if its true but i have heard that Bristol has flared up again and a police helicopter has just flown over the bristol channel heading that way.

I wonder if we will see the right wing paries like the BNP saying that this is all due to illegal immagrents?

Yes, that's exactly it. They get mobile phones and other 'luxury' items before they have earnt a penny. Very few of them have to do chores around the house. They get whatever they want, on demand.

This shows that in many cases, the parents are much of the cause of the problem. As flamingo pointed out, there are far too may people who don't know their responsibilities and aren't prepared to be accountable for their own actions. They just expect everything to be given to them. There's far too much greed with people just expecting things, whilst at the same time claiming to be living on the bread line. Yes, we're absolutely skint, but we still have money to go out on the ****, buy a new smartphone, go away on holiday with mates, new 90" plasma TV etc. Sorry, but try living all those years ago when people barely couldn't afford food to last the whole week.

Norman Tebbit may not have been the most subtle of people, but there was definately an element of truth in what he said in the 80s!

Was he the bloke that said that in the Thirties his dad just got on with it?

Yes that's him. The full quote was:

"I grew up in the '30s with an unemployed father. He didn't riot. He got on his bike and looked for work, and he kept looking 'til he found it."

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
One of the main ticketing agencies in Manchester (Ticketmaster) who are based in the centre of the city and cover all UK areas on a 24 hour basis, sent their late shift workers home at 2030 tonight and closed and secured their premises.

One of the young men from our village works there and he called in to see us tonight, after using the Macclesfield-bound train, and said that the police had blocked off the approach leading to Manchester Piccadilly station and that passengers were directed to use a different method to access the station. He said that the ticket office had been closed early and that many police were in the station area.

Shame people can't do that anymore :(

I agree, when i was looking for work i was applying for jobs in London Birmingham etc even though i live in south wales.

Its a shame when people in merthyr kicked off when Ian dunken smith mentioned that qoute.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Hariet Harman is talking sh*te about job centre closures causing all this.

She talks nonsence anyway, isnt she that minister who kept going on about womens rights etc in fact from what i have seen on sky news the women are much worse than the males on the streets most likely because the police are afraid to touch them

The quote was taken rather literally at the time Tebbit said it. I believe what he emant wa smore along the lines of 'Don't give up looking for ajob, keep on trying desite the knock backs and eventually you will find one'.

It was a rathe rfoolish analogy to compare the early 1980's with the 1930's. Many couples both had to work to make ends meet, making it more difficult to relocate the whole family to wherever there did happen to be some jobs.

More people also own their home now, making it far harder for them to just up sticks and move.

Chavs (or whatever you want to call them - the name isn't important) have been slowly attacking us for years, and growing in number. They've always been disorganised and their damage sporadic - until now. Now they're literally at war with us. And it's a war that is heavily biased in their favour at present. We can't do anything, the police can't do anything. But something has to happen, the tide has to turn otherwise this country is going to be wrecked.

I am hoping now that the tide will slowy start to change against these yobs, the governemnt have questions to answer at teh end of this, that said harriot halman hasnt helped things tonight. the cuts are no excuse for this, hopefully the conservatives will perhaps re-think cutting the number of police and hopefully perhaps get a backbone and deploy the army on the streets of london, it might not look good but i think it would be better than more nights of caos

Even McDonalds (and the rest of them) is difficult to gain employment in after uni, they'd rather take on sixth form students who are 16 or 17 years old, cuts down on their wages. And even then, you have to have at least 5 GCSE's A*-C, and MUST have at least a C in Maths and English, just to flip over a burger on a grill!

Can i just add to this comment if i may, I have worked for said company for 7 years with a year in between working for Scotrail, which i did not like, i then went back to working for them, I am paid roughly the exact same wage as i was with the railway bar a few pounds which i dont really notice. As for the fact of flipping burgers that does not happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am under the impression that phoning the BTP on 0800 40 50 40 is not free from mobile phones. This makes me very reluctant to call it especially as networks take advantage by charging ridiculous amounts uniformly for all 08 numbers.

Can anybody confirm / oppose this?

Try: 0121 634 5600, that routes to the same call centre for BTP. But only call it if you genuinely know of / or see something happening. They are very busy at the moment

I can't deny that my immediate thoughts when I saw the masses of tracksuits and hoodies and looting at Sports Retailers was, indeed, "chav scum". I don't like to stereotype, but those were my initial thoughts.

Being branded a "chav" is an insult to most younger people. To the ASBO crowd, it isn't though. "Chavs" can come from all backgrounds, and they are "neds" in Scotland.
