Can I remind everybody to be polite and respectful please.

Also if anyone wants to discuss any ideas for what they think the railway "should" do in these storm situations then please start a thread in the speculative section.

thanks

It's close enough to Birmingham to be Birmingham for taxi purposes too. Birmingham has a huge number of Ubers, getting say fifty of them to Bromsgrove would not be hard provided the roads were at all passable (and I think there are a lot of non-drivers here who don't have an appreciation of when roads are passable in a car even if they may not be in a bus or coach - having front wheel drive makes driving in snow and ice much, much easier - rear wheel drive is far, far worse on slippy roads and almost all if not all buses/coaches are rear wheel drive). It wouldn't be cheap but it would not be hard either.
I live the Bromsgrove side of Birmingham and couldn't get uber to deliver food, I ordered it at ten past 7 and they cancelled because there weren't any drivers by 10. And Bromsgrove might as well be Cardiff for those guys.

The Uber drivers all stayed in, they don't get paid enough to take the risk.

Do you drive?

I wasn't there last night so I can't comment on specific roads around Bromsgrove
I do and I was. The roads, while not necessarily an issue for a competent driver (so that rules out taxis...) on quiet roads, quickly became a lost cause. The snow came down thick and fast while the roads were still busy, so it predictably ground to a halt very quickly. Cars abandoned, HGVs stuck, buses stuck - the service in south Birmingham was curtailed and then completely abandoned - and there was even a council gritter/snowplough stuck in it.

From the social media reports, it was close to midnight before the chaos was cleared and driving potentially became a better option than walking...

Heritage railways manage it fine. If a tree is blocking the line they will just send their normal P-Way team out with chainsaws. There is no need to over-complicate something with additional red tape.
Heritage railways are entirely irrelevant to a discussion about a working railway, timescales, line utilisation levels, line speeds, requirement to be up and running again etc are completely different. The only similarity is that the H&S requirements for both for removing felled trees are exactly the same.

No heritage railway would be thinking of operating in the areas worst affected in any event.

This is not comparing apples with oranges at all. I work on the main line and volunteer on a heritage railway so know that the two are not comparable in any way, other than above, H&S requirements.

I'm determined not to fall out with anyone about this, especially you,

I agree. We are all entitled to our opinions and views differing though they may be. And I do actually agree that our (ie UK) railways act nowadays with an excess of caution..... But after (not only but in particular) Carmont, that is not surprising.

Glossop is closed all day despite the snow there being a mere dusting. That should be the easiest of all the lines to get open again, being a relatively short and local self-contained branch line, but it appears that Northern and/or Network Rail are simply going to leave it shut because that's what they decided two days ago. It's not good enough.

Agree. Maybe it does suggest that the Sunday issue wasn't the sole issue last time though, but rather one of culture.

The main things I criticised Northern for last time seem to stand - not operating things they could operate e.g. Lancaster-Preston shuttles, and not starting back up when they quite patently could. The cultural approach they seem to have taken was "we have said we'll start operations on Saturday so we'll work towards that, and have a relaxing time of it if it isn't too hard" rather than "we've said we can't operate on Friday, but things aren't as bad as it turned out so we'll bust a gut to get things going by Friday afternoon so peoples' weekends away aren't wrecked". A customer-focused organisation would clearly choose the latter path.

Has Network Rail reopened either east of Guide Bridge or the Hope Valley yet? If not when do they currently plan to do so? Northern are of course constrained by that.

Does anyone know what time the Hope Valley Line is likely to open by tomorrow morning please? I am travelling Sheffield-Preston tomorrow and Northern's website just says it is closed until the end of today, but nothing more specific regarding reopening.

Can we have a third option for the people who want to speculate about what is happening?

No snow here in the Calder Valley this morning. Trains running normally.
Was the snow forecast quite that far North? Seems that it's been parts of the West Midlands and East Midlands that have been adversely impacted by Storm Goretti heavy snow. Anywhere else?

No trains in Cornwall till at least 1600 according to guy from GWR on Radio Cornwall just now. Route proving train is out with chainsaws on board. Lot of trees and debris on the mainline.

I'm really shocked by the London North Western reduced timetable this evening. I'm off to MK to watch my team play Franchise in the FA cup, and up until this morning my journey from Long Buckby to Bletchley was 43 minutes on the way and 52 minutes on the way back.

I will now have to leave half an hour earlier as the trains are only hourly though Long Buckby. But that's not the worst of it, according to journey planners the last possible train is 21.10 from Bletchley, or around 10 minutes before the game finishes a mile and a half away!

If I go to Milton Keynes Central, it looks like the only route home is the 22.46 Avanti to Rugby, half an hour wait, then the last train back to Long Buckby. This last train has run around 40 minutes late twice this week, so it's pot luck whether it's late again (the only bright spot being they do usually run it eventually).

Does anyone know why the service has been decimated? I could understand it this morning, but all day seems a bit much.

Will I be able to claim full delay repay for the lack of services from Bletchley or does the fact the timetable has already been announced veto that? The last train is 1hr 20mins earlier than usual.

Just spotted on RealTimeTrains that there's a 22.02 from Bletchley to Northampton that misses the Long Buckby connection by 10 minutes. But it would still get me home earlier, even with 50 minutes wait at Northampton. Is there a reason this doesn't show in journey planners? I'll need to make a choice about aiming for Northampton or Rugby and don't want to make the wrong decision. I've just split the journey up and searched Bletchley to Northampton, Northampton to Long Buckby and neither train shows as an option - 22.02 from Bletchley doesn't show at all and 23.12 from Northampton shows cancelled. Weird.

Birmingham - Stansted Airport line reopens between Leicester and Peterborough this afternoon but passengers from New St, Nuneaton will need to change at Leicester as it is operating as 2 separate services. First one departs Leicester at 15:12.

Amusing to hear a network rail engineer on the tv news explaining that we have rails that have to move to enable trains to change tracks and they get blocked, the word points is presumably no longer one the general public is aware of, I suppose in days gone by every little boy had a train set with points but computer games are the norm now.

I'd love to see the risk assessment & vetting process for giving people chainsaws travelling on passenger trains, particularly in light of the recent incident at Stevenage....

Flooding on the line is what I've been told by Network Rail. Line block in place until Monday

Yes, I have too. Also when going to work. At my old job I lived 20 miles from the office and I can recall two occasions when I drove in through icy and sleety roads in winter, setting off extra early to give myself plenty of time. I'd get to the office bang on time and discover that the local workers who lived less than 2 miles away hadn't turned up as they had no way of getting in apparently. It used to wind me up no end.
Similarly. I used to have a 30 mile rail journey to work and on snowy days I would find that I was the only person who made it into the office. That was 15 years ago though in the days when the train service didn't preemptively get cancelled because of the risk of two inches of snow.

Other observations... In my part of the midlands we had more snow and colder temperatures on Monday, with no disruption. On Monday none of the stations including major city stations bothered to grit the platforms, but yesterday they gritted profusely just before the forecast rain hit in the evening and washed it all away.

No, South Yorks and Peak District were about the furthest north of anything that wasn’t just an odd shower.

There is a chance the line block mentioned is only for a branch line

Also i spotted 2Z99 at Wivelscombe Junction but it's disappeared from the tracker i'm using

Only after a number of trains were stuck for several hours last night (and several still are)...
Including train crew being put up in hotels across the region overnight. Which won't be available to work their shifts today

Is this not related to the Liskeard - Looe branch which has been closed for a while?

From National Rail Enquiries

The line between Liskeard and Looe remains closed following a period of recent heavy rain which flooded the track.

The water levels have now dropped and Network Rail have been able to inspect the bridge structures. The results of the investigation have confirmed some damage that will require repair work. This will need to be carried out before the line can be reopened and trains are able to run again.

No trains will operate between Liskeard and Looe until at least the end of Saturday 10 January. Rail replacement transport will run as stated below, subject to road conditions being safe to do so.

Please note there is no Sunday service on this route.

About an inch of snow overnight here in the Barnsley area which is turning to slush but roads are clear and buses are running.

You'd think therefore that Northern would be running a normal service but no, services on the Penistone Line have been suspended all morning and aren't expected to resume till this afternoon. The question remains therefore, if Northern can reintroduce services on the Penistone Line at short notice why can't they do the same for the Hope Valley?

Evidence required, rather than uninformed supposition.
Winter can be brutal over there. Over the years I've seen dozens of people skating on frozen canals, significant snowfall and freezing rain. Cycling back from the station to my grandmother's house was interesting to put it mildly.

My mum is currently at Manchester Piccadilly and is meant to travel on the 12:25 train to Reading with an advanced ticket. However, with no CrossCountry trains serving Manchester at the moment, does anyone know if there is a is a ticket acceptance in place? As in could she get Avanti to Stafford then London North Western to Birmingham?

For info I left Birmingham (by the Childrens hospital) at 2130 last night intending to stay on the A34 all the way to Great Wyrley. I had reached the outskirts of Walsall in 30 minutes but it was obvious the roads were untreated and the very wet snow was becoming ice at one degree above. All sorts of vehicles were having serious traction issues and I didn't fancy sliding down the hill on the Broadway so cut through the town instead. The problem I encountered was NXWM buses trying to get up the hill towards their depot at Birchills, so I decided to divert back onto the A34 where I got stuck behind more buses. There was an RS recovery truck with its winch cable out trying to assist the procession of buses, but there was no police presence to try and get some order going. Fortunately the RS guy helped me out by using his 4x4 to drag me up the hill, and RS Recovery pretty much saved the day, and Assume they are contracted to NXWM.

The very wet snow was turning into ice at one degree above, and turned the roads into skidpans. I eventually got home at about 0015 - about 20 miles.

This has been forwarded to me. Despite all of the "Britain has gone soft" moaning on here, this is a fine example of management at Network Rail using their initiative to source a snowplough.
