New XC fleet by 2035 ?

If they go for a uniform fleet of 7 car trains to replace the 22x, there is need for it to be a 1:1 swap, considering there are now plenty of 8 & 9 car formations using paired up voyagers. You wouldn't need as many units to maintain the servcice.

Not convinced 350/2 would be without some sort of alterations for luggage. You also have the issue no one would want to sit in large bays. Other 350s would be ok with luggage space added.

True, maybe some shuffling around with other 350s.

However, be careful or @The Planner will be pointing out the Birmingham issue (hehe)

They would need a full refurb anyway, so the current configuration is somewhat mute.

Nothing in England will get new overhead wires when Labour are in charge, they see the benchmark of Crewe to Kidsgrove (as completed by the 1997-2010 lot) as a distance too great.

Why invest in overhead wires when you can fit some batteries to trains, after all when the time comes to replace those batteries 7 years later they won't be in power and won't have to deal with the cost.
Without pointing out the obvious flaws in the political rant, battery chemistries for rail vehicles are designed for the preferred business case. Some of the manufacturers are guaranteeing to midlife. Of course by that time, batteries will be much lighter and cheaper still.

Plenty of data must be available even if not all published so one would hope the industry (including the non GBR bits) can get better at working together to use it to deliver better outcomes. Those outcomes will inevitably have to include improvements for the taxpayer, but even with the same seat miles operated more could probably be done to balance demand and supply geographically and temporally.

Folks on here may not like more variable timetables, maintenance schedules and fares, but they are one way of balancing things out without necessarily adding more cost.
It's then identifying the opportunities for five-car formations to come in handy, and the cost of the performance risks they bring in.

You might be able to save vehicle miles by splitting quieter services at Bristol, Reading, Newcastle etc., but you then have to weigh that up against the:

  • Inevitable shortforms when the attachments and detachments fall apart when there are delays
  • Cost of partial refunds for lack of seat reservations
  • Lost catering revenue during overcrowding
  • Cost of maintaining twice as many cabs
  • Lower ratio of seats:carriages
  • Cost of duplicate staffing in multiple portions
  • etc.
I'm not saying it's not possible, but I just don't think there are enough services on XC where you could run single formations over enough of the route to make this worthwhile, especially with some aggressive advance pricing on quieter services and the release of supressed demand once using XC becomes tolerable.

That really depends on how many billions it costs to electrify the line. Some of those ongoing cost savings have been eclipsed by ballooning costs.

That's the rub here in the UK. We are talking about battery services on routes that elsewhere in Europe would be electrified as most cost effective approach.

It's all about the business case, and NR seems to have developed the world's most expensive electrification, by a multiple not a percentage.

Versus the actual cheaper cost of buying and running shorter trains?

Many Southbound services have almost 15 minutes in Bristol Temple Meads (leaving Bristol Parkway at xx:22 and then Bristol Temple Meads at xx:45) so there is plenty of time for splitting. Northbound is only 8 minutes, but still ample joining time. I am afraid that is the one I know well, I expect the other split point (York/Newcastle/Edinburgh) can have similar scheduling.

I note your list does not balance the inevitable cost when the single unit is cancelled (which is a lot higher and real) compared to the cost of a shortform (which is not a financial cost, it is a saving).

I assume some of your costs are actually reputational?

We don't know for sure, but it would be a bad choice. On top of all the reasons listed above, it would be a bad use of platform capacity on a network that isn't exactly flush with capacity.
It would be a similar length to a 9 coach voyager, while providing a similar capacity, so no worse than the voyagers. The only major concerns I can see would be acceleration at low speeds, but even then, loco hauled sets are a realistic solution

9 coach 80x would provide additional room for future growth.

I love loco-hauled due to the lack of in-coach noise but the issue is there is a single point of failure (ie if your loco goes down, you’re going nowhere).

With units you can still go places if one of your under-floor engines goes down.

That said, if you have a spare loco nearby they are easier to swap for faulty ones.

I'd go for a mix of these, as per Avanti's two lengths of Pendolino. Diagram them based on how busy things are.

I love loco-hauled due to the lack of in-coach noise but the issue is there is a single point of failure (ie if your loco goes down, you’re going nowhere).

With units you can still go places if one of your under-floor engines goes down.

Modern MUs aren't that noisy these days. I find 80x are noisier on electric where you hear a loud whine than they are on diesel where it's just a quiet rumble. Even Voyagers are fairly quiet. And a bit of noise is no bad thing, it drowns out people playing Insta videos out loud and the likes.

There were restrictions on some steep gradients like the South Devon banks. On one power car, I think they needed a clear run at Dainton from Newton Abbot station without a signal stop in the old Aller Junction area. ISTR calls at Totnes were withdrawn too, so the trains didn't have to start again from a stand at the bottom of the next steep gradient.

Individual locos can have some built-in resilience too. The class 92 was an example of this, channel tunnel safety regulations requiring two completely separate standalone traction systems in their own fireproof compartments within the same bodyshell. Effectively, two locos in one, they are now considered overcomplex, technologically obsolete, and not particularly reliable. Some diesels in mainland Europe have up to four truck size engine-powered generator units in the same bodyshell rather than a traditional single large engine. Only as many engines as required for real-time load conditions are kept running. This is similar to the Stadler power pod concept.

Yes, would be interesting to see how Spanish or Italian contractors (or other countries) where they seem to find it economic, would price the job.

There is no need for 140mph bullet proof catenary on XC mainlines, not that many miles of 115-125mph unelectrified XC route either. The vast majority of the missing sections (and won't include south of Bristol, or north to Scottish highlands) are 90-110mph routes. Some sections are 85mph or less which really ought to allow simpler (and cheaper) design

7 coach 80x provides significant growth on all but a handful of services, and still provides a small growth on 9car sets. There are not many 9 cars running around and there will be even less of they ever revert to the pre COVID timetable.

7 car 80x makes sense.

I would go for base model with 26m bodyshells but with the 810's engines so should get to 125 on diesel without batteries. TPE has successfully fitted a battery to an 802, but a large proportion of the routes served by TPE's 802s are electrified, with Stalybridge-Church Fenton being the gap. An XC version would have much more off-wire running with few opportunities to charge the batteries south of South Kirkby Junction. GWR didn't fit its 802s with a battery as it would be flat by Castle Cary. They would then be hauling that dead battery for the remaining 110 miles to Plymouth, which includes steep banks, even without continuing to Penzance. Short lengths of wire could alleviate this but surely would offer limited time to charge. Bi-mode is probably the best solution now, with hopefully further electrification in due course. Birmingham-Derby is also a busy freight corridor so electrification is more worthwhile. If MML electrification is extended to Sheffield it would be a no-brainer to electrify from Sheffield to South Kirkby junction. At that point throw in the fast lines from King's Norton to Longbridge. Bristol Parkway to Westerleigh could be used but little point as there would be 2 power changes in quick succession.

For catering, I personally prefer the micro-buffet setup as found on LNER trains, and maybe a kitchen for First Class but it's hard to see if that will be used on an XC intercity service.

Order enough to replace all the Voyagers with a standardised go-anywhere fleet. The timetable could see its first major change in years with a standardised fleet enabling journey times to be optimised based on the new fleets' performance. Of course, given the number of trains XC interact with, it would be a challenge to redesign the timetable and meet everyone's needs as with the ECML timetable change.

Are any of the 80x fleet capable of chopping and changing length, like the 222s and Pendolinos? If so XC could bulk order 7-car units, then if future demand suffices, add an extra 2-carriages to some units.

There are not many stations that can handle a 9car voyager, but 10car is too long.

10car voyager (23m vehicles) is around 231m
9 car 80x (26m vehicles) is about 234m

A lot of main stations on West coast mainline are nearer 300m platforms
Many on GWR route marked for 2x5car IET (260m)
Those on South Coast Route are about 245m (for 12x20m)
Most on East Coast mainline also around 240-250m

Of course XC choose to call at some stations that have platforms that are much shorter, including some as short as about 120m. But that is fairly irrelevant to a 8 or 9 or 10car decision.

How is 7 car 80X a waste of capacity when it offers more capacity than a 9car 22X set?

Most stations along the route already see 9 car 80x so shouldn't be too much of a problem. On the XC route, GWR 9 car 80x operate on routes from just south of Worcestershire Parkway, of course not a direct service, but those stations served by XC are served by 9-car 80x. Same goes for Wakefield/Doncaster to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen so no issues there. Sheffield should be capable of handling a 9 car 80x, I'm sure EMR will be running 10 car 810s which will be longer than a 9 car 80x. Derby, Tamworth and New St have platforms long enough to take a 9 car 80x. Only Chesterfield and Burton will need platform extensions

Because you can't double up a 7 car 80X unless we make a 3 car 80X.
I think current XC policies have generally scared everyone away from double sets instead of one longer set. (catering often in one part only, sometimes one set locked out etc)

I do know where you are coming from, longer units are overkill at the fringes of the network, and in an ideal world would have a 5car set fully gangwayed that was doubled up on busy core (north of Bristol and Oxford, south of Chesterfield etc). The alternative idea of a 3car capacity booster set to avoid crowding, that never operates on its own, but which is designed to work coupled to provide extra seats in the busy central core is not daft idea.

The reality is even with auto couplers there are not suitable stations to detach a unit, leave it sitting in a platform for a while (in case of late running), then attach it to train going opposite direction. Bristol Temple Meads or Taunton could probably handle it, but can't think of other places with suitable spare platforms for stabling (and really would need a location around 70-150 miles from Birmingham in every quadrant to make it fully work).

The unknown stations are Chesterfield, Derby, Burton, Tamworth and New St. Derby has recently been rebuilt so should take a 9 car 80x, so it only leaves those other 4 stations to sort
There are few more stations than that with insufficient platform length, don't forget XC also serves places like Filton Abbey Wood, Chepstow etc with shorter platforms. These would all be relevant if there is one standard XC fleet system wide.

I know SDO selective door opening is a partial solution, but having been sold an advance ticket where allocated coach wasn't in the platform, and seen accessibility problems associated with it. It is long way from perfect.
