Update regarding Journey Beyond (Indian Pacific, Ghan, etc.)
I find this important. JB charges outrageously huge ticket prices.
I wanted to provide an update on my situation. Based on my experience, I must again advise caution when booking with Journey Beyond (JB).

I wanted to provide an update on my situation. Based on my experience, I must again advise caution when booking with Journey Beyond (JB).
- In March 2025, Journey Beyond (JB) cancelled my booking due to the derailment of a Southern Shorthaul Rail freight train. I was only notified whilst standing on the station platform.
- I immediately contacted Journey Beyond to explore options, stating my preference was to be rebooked onto another service. Unfortunately, JB did not reply to my initial emails.
- Consequently, I escalated the matter to the COO. The response was disappointing and unhelpful; I was criticized for contacting the freight operator directly to seek information.
- Over the following months, roughly 30 emails were exchanged between myself and the COO.
- After 4.5 months of fruitless negotiation, I asked my card issuer to pursue a chargeback.
- Regrettably, the bank denied the request as I had missed the 120-day deadline from the date of cancellation. This was an oversight on my part, as I had assumed the window was at least a year.
- I then returned to JB to demand a straightforward refund. I faced significant bureaucratic hurdles; at one stage, it was implied that refunds were only for Australian residents. The COO requested a copy of my driving licence, but when I provided my non-Australian one, I was told only an Australian licence would suffice.
- UPDATE: After further difficult correspondence—and escalating the matter to JB’s owners, Crestview Partners—the COO finally relented and agreed to issue a refund.
- However, JB refused to refund the original credit card and insisted on a wire transfer. Consequently, I have lost approximately 10% of the fare value due to transfer fees and exchange rates.
