We don't have any water cannons in this country. And apparently it would be illegal for them to be used even if we did

There are six and they're in NI. As it's only just after the period when things traditionally kick off over there I doubt they'd be willing to part with them.

Time for some of the London bus operators to refuse to send their vehicles out until the authorities get a grip on this?

Just to refer back to my previous postings, I offer my apologies to any student members here who I may have offended, I wasn't intending to suggest that these riots are all a result of students. Obviously the recent student protests, in which a lot of students did sadly let their cause down, as well as the idiot mobs who hijacked the whole thing, didn't ultimately earn students many favours, and yes i do take issue with that I'm afraid. But my point is that the whole university situation in this country is a sham, and it's time it was stopped. Promoting thousands of people attending Uni each and every year when it is common knowledge that the jobs to support them all don't exist, is criminal. If less people attended, some of this would affect people who wish to persue a genuine career path, which is unfortunate. But equally there are many, many individuals who attend Uni each year simply because they think it will be a laugh, and because pretty much everybody who wants to get into a Uni will get there, regardless of what educational achievements they may or may not have to their name. The whole system being skewed to cater for people like this and generating a culture where everyone goes to Uni because it's 'what you do', doesn't help. Those who argue that making Uni less accessible is a crime against our youth would do well to think a little further outside the box. No, I do not mean that 'only rich people should be able to attend', but there does need to be a cull in numbers, perhaps based on the value of what people are hoping to achieve with their time at Uni.

Police are prepared to use plastic bullets if the violence continues tonight.
Suits me, the police need some force behind them in order to quell the looters, who in Birmingham at least are out purely to chance their luck and see what they can get their hands on and generally cause some bother rather than having any particular cause to protest for. Mindless thugs.

The rumour is that more aggressive activity is already beginning again in Birmingham city centre around the Bullring at the moment, focusing on Jamie Olivers' restaurant to begin with, according to a phone call received by the bar manager in The Square Peg (my local Wetherspoons in the city centre): They certainly started clearing away the glasses and bottles from the shelves pretty darn sharpish and started preparing for an early closing at any rate.

My local pub (Not the 'Spoons; but my genuine local) was acting as a safe house for folk seeking sanctuary from the riots last night, with many staying overnight. With the boards up on the windows that place seems to be virtually impregnable, not bad for a Victorian era drinking establishment!

I imagine Croyden Trams are going to have some difficulties tomorrow. That big fire is right next to the tram lines and is that hot that the dirt in the rails is on fire (looks like the rails are on fire other than the fact steel doesn't burn), and the overhead must be totally ruined.
A number of trams were marooned last night and smashed up with the passengers robbed at gunpoint. No exact details but a bod from work got caught up in it sounds very grim.

I'm quite happy to be the first poster here to suggest that we arm the police as a result of this. If you're looting a shop, burning other people's belongings or robbing innocent members of society, I'd see no issue with you being shot where you stood. Saves the taxpayer forking out for Court, prison, etc.

I'm afraid that Ken is wrong this time criticising people in power in times like this. What he should do is stand in line with them until we get through the situation and criticise them afterwards for any deficiencies in the system. I am normally with him on many things nevertheless I must say that the timing of his remarks is poor to say the least this time.

He has a point to a certain degree, especially with the division the new tuition fees reform has caused in the society, as an example, however I have my own views on this and this whole theory about people not being given opportunities in life. I'm not going to say much on this subject as some of it is highly sensitive to many however I do believe that everyone is given the opportunities to succeed, not just once or twice but all through their lives. Whether one takes these opportunities, or if they have the role models to encourage them to take these opportunities is a totally different matter. Young people in this country, from any background, have far more opportunities than those in many other countries, and the way things have gone this time is absolutely appalling.

By being a bit firmer, Ms May will win a lot of support and respect from the ordinary hard-working individuals. I don't think that the current government has the bravery to do what is necessary, for fear of the criminal justice system putting the wrong priorities first.

Worrying times indeed.

This gives you an idea what we are up against:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14458424

We have to prove to them that they can't do what they want. And, whatever it takes to do that, will have to be done.

There is no place for anarchists like them in our society. They don't like our society so their wish should come through. I'd deport anyone involved in rioting. Sadly I know this could never happen, and we have to accept them and welcome them as part of us. The only thing stopping them doing this 24/7 is the fear of police action. If they no longer fear the police, they will do anything they want.

They even loot from injured people and also trash charity shops.

Now, I think most people who do wrong can of course be reformed and can realise the error of their ways. But some of these people are so bad that, no I don't think there is any hope for them.

Exactly like that. Even up to the point that there is a supposedly deactivated gun over the bar that we all reckon is actually live :D I love my local :)

And any day now it could be surrounded by a huge crowd of dead-eyed zombies desperate to get in at any cost! Have you got any Queen on the jukebox?

Calm down Yorkie. You can't deport people if they don't originally come from abroad. We don't have an empire any more you know ;)

I think prison may be a more realistic option though.

Where? Prisons are understaffed and overcrowded. London's cells are full and there is no way we can lock them up without trial.

Shoot them all. We're better off without them.

Better still - create Penal Battallions and send these scumbags down the road in Afghanistan ahead of the regular squaddies, save a good soldier getting blown up and get rid of scum at the same time - simples

I wonder how many of them would defect to the enemy though? They've already shown they have no respect for Britain.

So you put them on an island and just hope they stay there? No guards? Compounds? Fences? New prisons will have to be built to accomodate this mob.

I'm afraid that the lawyers will have a field day should that happen.

Lightly guarded on the mainland I suppose. Even in the middle of summer the North Sea is not warm.
We could of course put these new prisons on such islands.

Building new prisons is all very well and good but it has much the same problem HS2 has - NIMBYs

Well, if we're going to lock the buggers up, it'll have to be somewhere. Maybe we could abandon HS2 and spend the money on prisons instead. It seems something this country is in greater need of.

More prisons mean more prison guards, something the coalition is opposed to.

The coalition will have to accept the state of affairs as it is, not as they would like it to be. Their response so far has been underwhelming to say the least. Nick Clegg saying "I don't think so" when asked by a member of the public if this is what England is going to be like in the future. Theresa May blustering like an angry school ma'am who has just caught the head girl in the company of the rugby captain with her knickers round her ankles.

Have the prisons run by the army, and use old barracks as the prisons...

I thought the army was largely in Afghanistan and other places we haven't been invited to?

It mostly is, those elements that aren't are either recovering from/preparing for deployment or waiting for the envelope in the post that will tell them they're surplus to requirement.

If you want them to man some prison camps you're either going to have to draw down from Afghanistan faster or not make them redundant and even then you'll probably still need more troops than we currently have.

Most of these are kids, we don't need massive prison camps off the coast of Shetland, we need to reverse the 'don't care' society, that runs from top to bottom, from the Bankers to the Hoodie smoking grass.

A lot of this is cultural, from trash TV, music and films, to don't-care parents, essentially not giving a fig about anyone else, and getting what 'you' want, and sod everyone else. The easily gratified, greedy, consumerist me, me, me society that thinks it's entitled to things without hard work, and doesn't look at the big picture.

Having said that, this lot also need discipline, and you have to ask where the parents are and what valves they give to their kids. We need to stamp down on this nonsense first, then start asking some deeper questions.

Precisely. It's a sad state of affairs the way things have turned out to be.

Communities don't get neglected by the society. In today's political environment a community with the desire not to be excluded from the mainstream society cannot be ignored.

No one can fail a disassociated community apart from the community itself. As I said before, everyone has opportunities. Whether it is taken is what differentiates someone successful and someone who is not.

Some people in this country needs to learn that they need to take responsibility for their own lives rather than pinning the blame on someone else.

I agree with what Diane Abbott said. The only real outcome of this is that the local communities hit hardest will be the ones that are already struggling. Some people just do not think. They are not Robin Hood helping the poor by robbing the rich. They are robbing people in their own community, who are probably also struggling in this economic climate. Looting shops will only result in those local branches being shut, hence losing more employment opportunities in the local area.

Yes, these people are very often damaging and ruining their own community, small independent businesses in the areas these people are destroying may suffer immensely. Their cover story is poverty, when all they are doing in many cases is making the poverty worse for the people of their own communities. It shows an utter lack of respect for anything.

This assumes that these people feel part of 'their own' community, or indeed that they are part of any community at all. What seems more likely is that they are beyond the reach or control of any community, be it local or national. Expecting them to respect anything at all in this circumstance is just wishful thinking, and all talk of 'respect' is naive and irrelevant.
