Economics of airline cancelations?

So I took an extreme day trip to Berlin yesterday. The 1st of the year and 8 last year.

My return flight was cancelled as was another BER-LGW flight earlier plus a BER-MAN flight as well.

I had to overnight in Berlin.

I wonder, out of pure curiosity this costs airlines?

easyJet put me up and I've saved reciepts for food and the taxi back from the hotel. My new ticket flies home today, which will no doubt be at cost to the Airline.

I notice majority of flights involving Amsterdam were cancelled yesterday.

It does cost what most of us would consider a lot of money to cancel a flight. Sometimes though if it’s due to roster disruption elsewhere, some airlines will cancel flights that are perhaps not as full to build resilience back into the operation. It may therefore minimise costs that are an inevitability anyway. Either way you’re probably talking £tens of thousands each time.

Liverpool Airport shut because of weather. My Gatwick one was due to delays in the schedule before my flight. De icing operations, while not the primary reason, added extra tome to the delay. Both the incoming flight and my return flight got cancelled as there is an airport curfew at Berlin of 23.30hrs local.

As for the other Gatwick and Manchester, I don't know. I didnt ask or didnt come across someone who said they were on that flight. I was tired from it all, as were many so maybe i missed out to ask.

What I do know is easyJet run 2 rescue flights that were not up for general sale, nor searchable on skyscanner etc. Even Gatwick airports websites own arrivals and departures page did not list these flights.

We had people who were on the Manchester and Liverpool who were flown to Gatwick and ultimately had to find a way home from there. Some women from there were having to go to London on the train tonight and stay in a hotel near Euston, then go to Lime Street in the morning and file a claim for it. That situation, once multiplied must cost an arm and a leg.

That's all I can say.

Unfortunately these weather related delays and cancellations are an occupational hazard to airlines and by extension the passengers. Amsterdam appears to be having a horrid time of it at the moment with I understand over 50% of the flights cancelled due to the snow and freezing fog which is not conducive to safe flying! I feel sorry for the displaced passengers as a result of this, regardless of whether you’re recompensed it’s the fact that people might be struggling to get home, certainly none of the KLM flights to Humberside have operated in the last couple of days I don’t think and a lot if the people using that do so to commute home so it’s eating into their time off!

Depends, 261 payments may not be qualifying in this instance because there may be significant ATC restrictions placed on airlines due to the weather. However even so I suspect the disruption is costing at least £10000 per flight cancelled. That’s a very conservative estimate and it’s likely to be much more.
