I'm finding that RTT is becoming near-unusable on my phone lately, though I can't see an obvious cause for my problems. When browsing pretty much any results page with Safari on my iPhone (12 mini running iOS 18.7.2), the webpage will crash after some period and then reload itself. Before reloading, Safari displays a message that a reoccurring problem with the webpage has occurred. Crashes sometimes happen within only a couple of seconds of the page loading, usually whilst I'm trying to scroll down the page. As well as generally feeling somewhat sluggish, it means it's currently taking a number of attempts to navigate the site and read what I want to search for.

I could of course report this directly through RTT's contact channels, but I was curious if anyone else has been experiencing similar issues lately, or can otherwise comment (@Tom) or offer a potential solution? Nothing about my phone has changed recently (including OS version) so I'm at a loss as to what is causing it, but it is frustrating to say the least.

Have you turned your phone off and then restarted it recently, it could be that your phone needs a refresh to update things.

Yep. I've done all the basic standard 'tech support triage' that I expected to clear the issue. One option I haven't done yet is to purge Safari's history and site data, but that will affect other websites so have held off for now.

I had a problem about a month back where the advert obscured part of the screen on my phone where I change the setting - Type of train, Calls Previously/Subsequently, Actual/Planned.

The registration flow expired 3.79 minutes ago, please try again.

I got the jist of what it meant, but I've never known of any other site using wording like that.

Also, why is the non-QR authenticator code called an authenticator 'app secret'? I've never heard of an 'app secret' before.

Anyway, off to manage buy my RTT+ subscription now :D

I will add, I think this might be the first time I've checked a "yes, I would like to receive news" checkbox

Random question, are there any plans for an RTT app.m? AKAIK there used to be one but it’s no longer thing
My understanding is that it's no longer considered necessary with modern, high-performance smartphones that are much more capable of displaying websites smoothly compared with older ones. I believe that's true in general (in my opinion, the only couple of exceptions are the two most popular video and music streaming services, which I do have as the apps). As long you don't mind the "get the app" nag bars.

What RTT functionality do you think would be done better on an app rather than just on the mobile website? :)

Yes. They're expected to be released in mid 2020.

I have an iOS and Android version in testing at the moment.

It's part of the authentication system that we use, but the developer relevant has already fixed that particular wording following your message.

It is text that the QR code contains.

Fair enough - what functionality does it add that the mobile website doesn't have?

Ah thanks both, I suppose it's still early days :)

Thanks, after Googling it seems like it's a well-established term that I just hadn't heard of before.

Just had a random idea for a feature: a quick add button or something on a service page that lets you add that service, or part of it, to your railmiles

Perhaps there's already such a thing, but a Quick Reference Guide (QRG), or a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, about RTTs functionality and how to use it would be really helpful - especially for people like me, who sometimes don't really understand some of the questions asked on this thread, nor their purpose, let alone the answers provided!

Many thanks

I agree. Though Realtime Trains does have a FAQ page, the only mention it makes of the Quick Search Box (in particular) is:

How do I find the next trains from my station?

Enter the name of the station in the Quick Search box at the top of the page, or on the homepage.

The only mention made of any non-obvious search functionality is on the Detailed search page:
You can select the location you wish to view, you'll need to know its name or the three letter CRS code.

For some reason, nowhere does the site mention any of the following functionality:
  • Searching for unit numbers in the Quick Search box (e.g. "756102")
  • Searching for a location at a time other than "now" in the Quick Search box (e.g. "Cardiff Central at 1300", "CDF at 1300")
  • Using the "detailed" suffix in the Quick Search box, which works to enable detailed mode while searching for unit numbers (e.g. "756102 detailed"), location names "now" (e.g. "Cardiff Central detailed"), location names at a time (e.g. "Cardiff Central at 1300 detailed", CRS codes "now" (e.g. "CDF detailed", CRS codes at a time (e.g. "CDF at 1300 detailed" and headcodes (e.g. "2T16 detailed")
Searching for headcodes in the Quick Search box is mentioned, but only if you enter an invalid location, a unit number or a... headcode, into the Location search box:
We cannot find the location you asked for. Did you want to search for a headcode? You need to do that in Quick Search, at the top of every page in the menu.

I've always wondered why the functionality in the bulleted list in particular is "hidden" - I only found out about it from either this thread here on RailUKforums (a site external to Realtime Trains), or fellow enthusiasts who somehow knew about the functionality. Why isn't it mentioned on the site itself, and can it be?

Also, in the "Basics" section of the FAQ page, why does the "How do I find trains in the future or the past?" section still say, with regards to the past:
Make sure that it’s within the past week

...even though the "How far in the past can I look up a service?" section does say the correct, up-to-date dates depending on registration/membership type:
You can look up information for services that ran up to 14 days ago if you haven't registered. Registered users can search up to 1 month, and RTT+ users can search up to 5 years in the past.

In addition, why are there only English and Scottish stations in the "popular departure boards" links - no Welsh ones? Not even Cardiff Central? Can Cardiff Central be added at least, so there's at least one Welsh station in the "popular departure boards" links?

Finally, could a feature be added where RTT+ members can be sent STP notifications? A rival site has this feature, but with it only being on that rival site, I'd have to purchase a separate subscription for those in order to get them directly (currently, the ones I'm interested in, for Cambrian 197s, are forwarded to me by someone I know, who doesn't pay for STP notifications, as someone who's been getting them from that rival site since before they started charging for them).

(as always, I still very much appreciate Realtime Trains and I'm now an RTT+ member)

I’ll hazard a guess at this one - they’re not popular?

Fairly sure that list is the X most popular stations accessed by users, plus 1 other station at random from the network

In what way is Cardiff Central or any other Welsh stations "not popular", even though the English and Scottish stations in the (non-random) links are "popular"?

According to the links, the English stations of Bristol Temple Meads and Liverpool Lime Street aren't "popular" (even though they are)...

...but to not have any Welsh stations in the links, not even Cardiff Central, the main station of the capital city of Wales (despite some London stations and Edinburgh and Glasgow being in the links), I think is wrong.

Until this is fixed, the (non-random) links only represent England and Scotland, not also Wales. Again, I think that's just not right. What do @Tom / team think?

Again, at a guess, RTT’s user base isn’t very Welsh…

We’re not talking about the popularity of the station.

We’re talking about the popularity of the page on the website…

All the enthusiasts I know here in Wales use Realtime Trains.

Any supposed "low" Welsh usage of the site and any supposed "low" popularity of Welsh stations on it, even the most major one of Cardiff Central, I'm guessing will be down to Wales being the smallest constituent country of Britain by a long way, so no wonder none of its stations are in the links, but I don't think that's a good way of representing things.

All I'm asking is that Wales is represented "at all" in the (non-random) links, and the most obvious way to do that would be to at least include the single most major station of Cardiff Central.

It doesn't need to be represented. If someone would like to view trains at Cardiff Central they can by simply searching it, job done.

What an odd request. Wales would be represented if it contained a station that was one of the most popular - evidently it doesn’t so isn’t there.

I wonder if you're misunderstanding the logic others are making. The suggestion* is that the top 11 stations are not hard-coded and/or decided by the RTT developers - they are the 11 most popular stations of all users of RTT - there's no pro English & Scottish or anti-Welsh sentiment implied! It's possible that Cardiff Central is actually 12th (although I note it's only the 37th busiest station in the UK by passenger numbers). Just because RTT has users in Wales doesn't automatically mean that stations in Wales will be more popular.

As an aside, I've just opened RTT and on the first load, the random station was a Welsh one!

* this is the working assumption at least - until we hear from Tom!

The network is a British network, not an "English" or "Welsh" or "Scottish" network. Looking at it, other than wondering why an Australian outback town featured, I saw 11 of the busiest stations in the UK listed. If Cardiff isn't up there, it isn't up there. That's a skewed view, because 7 of the 12 stations listed are in London. If it were to be "fair", then that would suggest a different mix of stations, of which Cardiff might be one.

The list is reviewed about every 6 months but I've not had need to change it for a while. We base it off purely live departure board usage across the course of the previous 6 months because RTT's primary user base isn't enthusiasts - far from it. (Apart from the last one in the list that is deliberately randomised from the little ones.)

Looking at just last month, the busiest station for RTT was London Euston by a long way; to the degree that nearly 1% of all page views on the website were for Euston live departures split across simple and detailed. The split is heavily slanted towards simple mode. No prizes for guessing the busiest hours.

Continuing down that list, we end up with (all simple) Waterloo, Paddington, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester Picc, King's Cross, Edinburgh Waverley, Glasgow Central, York, Marylebone, Liverpool Street, Sheffield, Newcastle, Crewe, Bradford Interchange, and Bradford Forster Square before we get to Cardiff Central. If I'm adjusting it I'm anything I'm adding far more London/northern stations and pulling the likes of Clapham and Glasgow Queen Street!

Is it possible to have a toggle that removes Rail Replacement Buses eg 0B00? While it is handy having them, there could be a toggle like the WTT/VAR/STP/CAN ones could be named "BUS" so then schedules come up without them or with them if needed?.

If I could have a toggle that solely removes the ID 0B00, as I do not like the number of zeros but find the existence of such RRBs useful, then I support such.
