A few freight trains have unofficial names. DB Cargo's 4M60 Southampton-Northampton and 4O56 vice-versa must surely be the "Inter-Amptons"?
4L36 08:12 Wentloog-Felixstowe North & 4V36 22:45 return is known as ‘The Wine Liner’.

Carolean Express is a dreadful name for a train because the average punter hasn't a clue what it is and it doesn't reveal anything interesting if you Google it. Unlike say, the Master Cutler.
It was a nice touch to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

If only there was a snappier name for a Scottish train to commemorate a king being crowned.

I think the platform CIS uses the headcode to pull the names through.

Within the last year or so when GWR reintroduced the names, the TfW system started announcing them, but for their services as well as the GWR ones where they shared a common headcode. TfW quickly disabled the feature.

There are quite a few GWR named trains.

- The Capitals United
- The Cathedrals Express
- The Cheltenham Spa Express
- The Atlantic Coast Express (Summer)
- The Pembroke Coast Express (Summer)
- The Red Dragon
- The Bristolian
- The Cornishman
- The Devon Express
- The Golden Hind
- The Royal Duchy
- The Mayflower
- The Saint David
- The Torbay Express
- The Night Riviera

I believe these all get announced by GWR station CIS systems.

They also had ‘The Merchant Venturer’ and ‘The Armada’ but I did read GWR discontinued the use of a couple of the named services in 2024 when they brought the names back following COVID, and it may have been these ones?

They also used to operate the ‘Weymouth Wizard’ on summer Saturdays, but it was never announced at stations. It was the HST round trip to Weymouth.
There’s also The Welshman and another Carolean Express (from memory both go between Swansea and London, though the Carolean does London - Swansea first. I happened to catch the first one and got a goodie bag).
Named trains on First Great Western. Some of the times have changed for a few services like the Devon Express being the 07:30 Paddington to Paignton via Bristol, Merchant Venturer being the 08:00 Paddington to Bristol, on the 2016 timetable.

Got a few labels with the named services but with GWR mostly dating January 2018. Two shown here as an example.
The name plates shown on the HSTs are great - though having been taking several of the South Wales ones since 2015 I’ve never seen a plate!

4L89 currently from Garston to Felixstowe seems to be known to some as the ‘Up Scotch’ even though it hasn’t run from Coatbridge for several years!
Funny how long it takes for anything to die out on the railway. Always been the same.

‘The Armada’ still exists in the Dec 25 timetable, 05.55 ex Plymouth and 19.03 ex Paddington.

There’s a couple more to add to your list: ‘The Cotswolds & Malvern Express’ at 09.52 from Paddington and 15.18 from Hereford and on the South Wales route ‘Y Cymro - The Welshman’ at 07.18 from Swansea and 18.48 from Paddington.

I have contacted EMR regarding their named train and am waiting for a response but obviously with the Christmas holidays things will be delayed, so I will report back when I have an answer. As far as I can see the new timetable doesn’t mention them but I have heard or seen any announcement that they have ceased, in fact hidden away in the latest timetable there is a brief mention of The Master Cutler, so we will have to wait and see.

With regard to GWR named trains they are all listed in the latest timetable. They are as follows……

The Bristolian
The Cheltenham Spa Express
The Cotswold and Malvern Express
The Devon Express
The Royal Duchy
The Torbay Express
The Capitals United
The Flying Carolean
The Red Dragon
The Saint David
The Welshman
The Armada
The Cornishman
The Cornish Riviera
The Golden Hind
The Mayflower
The Night Riviera

I also presume that in the summer timetable they will include The Atlantic Coast Express and The Pembroke Coast Express as they are Summer only trains.

Are the named trains any faster than usual trains?
In theory a named train should have something special about it whether it is the fastest, or maybe has a restaurant car when others on the route don’t or is more luxurious or commemorates something etc etc. While this can and does apply to some named trains and certainly did in the past, in today’s modern railway that is not always the case.

My own personal opinion is that many of these named trains should no longer be named unless there is something about them that makes them special. This would mean many names would disappear but would make more sense, and the remaining ones should then be properly promoted.

I inclined to agree. Although I'm normally sensitive to not changing things and keeping historical terms in place, I really don't understand why some random services to the same place, amongst some others, have been allocated a name that doesn't mean anything to most people and is only really published in the timetable (not displayed on information screens, etc) - e.g. see The Carolean Express!

GWRs 'Cheltenham Spa Express' (up and down) is just a regular service. Nothing Express about it.

It must pick up 100+ school kids at Stroud on the London service

Were there any named trains that ran mostly or wholly on the current Northern Rail network?

If you mean since the Northern Rail network began, then no. The LNER named trains use certain sections of it such as The West Riding Limited to and from Bradford Forster Square, and most of the LNER named trains at some point run over sections used by Northern Trains but not mostly or wholly.

No. I mean since railways began. I suspect only London bound trains and their returns were named though.

The 7.23 departure from Cardiff - ‘Capitals United’ is the fastest train between Cardiff and London running non stop from Swindon to Paddington. Does the journey in 1hour 51 minutes.

Over the years “The East Anglian” has been synonymous with the GEML. Originally an afternoon train from Norwich it settled down to depart Norwich at 07:45, 07:55 & then for years under NXEA at 07:40. That operator even went overboard and named a class 90 loco too. It was shown on display screens but sadly only a few of the more enthusiastic Senior conductors bothered to announce it onboard. Following the arrival of the class 745 fleet GA planned for this honour to go to the fast Norwich in Ninety (Ni90) service (08:00up) and the following Ni90 service at 09:00 was to be christened “The Broadsman” with services returning respectively from Liverpool St at 17:00 & 19:00. Unfortunately the pandemic put pay to all this planning. We are now left with fast(ish) trains at 08:00up/17:00dn SX (09:00/19:00 SO) but they carry no names.

Partly on the current Northern network.... there was a short-lived Regional Railways SO Blackpool - Holyhead that ran in the 90s and was named The Dubhlinn.

Yes and in the same era I was thinking of The Borderer, Tyne Enterprise, Tyne Enterprise, Ayrshire Trader, and Galloway Enterprise which all ran along the Tyne Valley route.

Capitals United is the previous train (0557 from Swansea rather than 0623), which annoying does now stop at Didcot, Swindon and Reading. 0723 from Cardiff as you say is non stop from Swindon.

That being the case, it would be better if the 6.23 from Swansea was named ‘Capitals United’ as that is the faster train and also likely to have more passengers.

In my experience, TFW run stations don't bother to announce or have on screens the GWR named trains. Perhaps they do not even know which ones they are?

While it is true that all the current named trains travel both to and from London (with the exception of The Flying Scotsman that these days only goes to London from Edinburgh) there have been quite a few in the past that haven’t. The North Briton was one example it ran from Leeds to Glasgow via York Newcastle & Edinburgh. It ran between 1949 to 1968 before reappearing in 1972 to 1975 when it finally ceased.

With regard to named trains that started and finished ENTIRELY within what we now know as the Northern Train region I am not aware of any, now or in the past, that did so. Regarding named trains that MOSTLY ran within that area then the closest I can see to that was the above mentioned North Briton. Of course today several named trains go through that region and a great many did in the past.

I think the 0557 gets the name as it gets you into London before 0900 - certainly I can easily make a 0930 meeting in the City, which you can’t do on the 0623. It’s also a very minimal time saving, as the 800s are quick off the mark and the approach into Paddington is slow and busy.

Someone else has previously said the issue with announcing GWR train names at TfW stations is that it’s linked to the head code, and some TfW services use the same head codes as the named GWR ones.
