First few posts on this thread (7 pages back!) explain why the signaller needs to be aware of sidings etc that haven’t been used for a while. Rust on the railhead could lead to a wrong-side track circuit failure, with the siding apparently clear, but a train in there, invisible to the signalling system.

Or a wrong side failure that’s leads to a set points self normalising or being put to normal under a train. So it will act as a local reminder to the signaller to peg the points reverse until the train movement is conformed clear of the points.

Resignalling work is taking place in the Kingmoor (Carlisle) area over the next seven days:

1767277266191.png

Just to be clear, Carlisle PSB itself is not closing - as I understand it, the changes just affect a small part of
one of the panels at the main PSB which interfaced with the Kingmoor interlocking which is (or rather was)
located in the old Kingmoor PSB building, which closed back in 1973:

location on Google maps:

When the work is complete, that section of line will be controlled by a new workstation located
in Carlisle PSB, but all the signal numbers/locations in the affected area will remain unchanged.

Likely to mean the driver is in the mess room, for when the train is ready to move
Room almost invariably means room in an occupied platform for an another train to arrive, at many locations it has to be advised verbally to the signaller by station staff or train crew.

Does anybody know what 'EYES' means. I often see this on the up/down goods line just by Ashburys station Manchester. It also appears just after Denton Junction heading towards Guide Bridge station.

Patrolling/Inspection taking place?

Is this just a recontrol (Workstation taking over from panel but keeping the actual relays or SSI or whatever) or is the interlocking itself being updated as well?

Quite often what's shown on RTT or whatever is a reverse of the way round a Signaller's panel is, so it will read the correct way round to the Signaller
RTT doesn't show signal berths <D.

But Yes, OTT, Signalmaps, Traksy et al will all have some displays 'flipped' compared to the signaller's panel for various reasons and it can be reasonably assumed that the signaller has input the descriptions to display normally to them.

XMAS was interposed in 28 different berths across the country on 24th December, and in 26 different berths on 25th December.

Railcam and Freightmaster are based in the north of England, so when we were creating
our WCML and ECML maps back in the day, we started at the north end of both routes
and gradually worked our way south to London, hence all those maps having north on
the left and south on the right, which is the opposite of OTT and Traksy who were
presumably copying the 'official' layout of the signalling diagrams used by Network Rail.

But to be honest, I don't think I would do anything differently if I started again from scratch,
as it gives enthusiasts a choice as to which orientation they prefer...

IIRC NR official documents generally have the lower mileage end on the left so you read 'down' the line from left to right. Although some lines which run predominantly East to West such as the GWML and SWML are (often/generally/sometimes) presented with the low mileage on the right so that the diagram aligns better to geographic maps.

Also I think the signalling panels and frames themselves can be different to the diagams where it's relevent/useful to do so. E.g. for the diagram to be better related to the physical orientation of the signaller. Obviously AB boxes needed to have sight of the layout itself, and I think NX Panels generally kept the orientation of the major station. Probably not relevant now in ROCs & IECCs.

Traksy's West Coast maps have south on the right. The thinking is that broadly geographically they go westwards. Weirdly I think parts of the Lichfield-Carlisle map got painstakingly flipped over at some point to fit, although I have no idea why they it was drawn the other way round to start with.

The East Coast maps go the other way round because it fits in better with the Transpennine map, and I can't bring myself to draw Newcastle the other way up.

Either way, all the maps have details from multiple workstations, panels and boxes, many of which would contradict each other. I typically don't look at the direction of the signal box before drawing a map.

When will the new signalling at Church Fenton through Cross Gates be represented on the maps please?

Ah, I hadn't noticed it was open again tbh. I'll see if I can track some trains through and get it updated on Traksy tomorrow

The only bit still shut is Church Fenton platforms 3/4 (and the through line) to Micklefield. Opens 26th Jan. Leeds to Micklefield to Selby is open, as is Colton to Church Fenton to Sherburn.

I updated the Freightmaster map on Sunday - Railcam did theirs last week.

opened at 08.30 on Sunday 4th.

If you want any help pinpointing the location of any of the new signals/berths,
feel free to contact me by PM and I'll do my best to assist.

May not be the funniest of all messages but we have RUST seen today at Healey Mills TMD, I assume referring to the abandoned/rusty wagons that are left there
