Just asking if there are any 802s booked on WCML eg Manchester to Edinburgh route if there are let me know what services they are on as I saw an 802 at Piccadilly on an Edinburgh service would this be via WCML or Newcastle?

One of four services today is an 802 running via the WCML, as seen on RTT:

Then checking a few recent dates on RTT, some services are 802 operated. I don’t know if they are allocated to the same subset of services every day, someone else may know if there’s a known pattern.

Pretty sure there is a diagrammed 802 shift on the WCML, but I’m sure that they turn up on other services due to breakdowns / setswaps

There are two 802s on Edinburgh/Manchester Airport usually, one covering for the 397s getting a refresh.

There's 2 booked diagrams Monday to Saturday each doing 2 round trips which start with the 06:12 and 08:12 Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Airport. There are also Sunday diagrams but they run to a different pattern

10:13 Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Airport.
14:10 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh Waverley.
18:13 Edinburgh Waverley to Preston.
21:09 Preston to Edinburgh Waverley.

The Preston journey is essentially a booked set swap as it connects with a 397 diagram which turns back towards Manchester. This is because there's no balancing trip to get the 802 back to Craigentinny.

The other Sunday diagram starts in Manchester.

10:04 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh Waverley.
14:12 Edinburgh Waverley to Manchester Airport.
18:10 Manchester Airport to Edinburgh Waverley.

I wonder why TPE ordered the 397s over more 802s. Both have hard seats though.

802s usually run via Stalybridge, Huddersfield /Leeds route to Newcastle /York. 397s are the main stay for TP services to Edinburgh. These sometimes run to Doncaster via Crewe, WCML , a long way round until the Trans Pennine route is fully electrified.

The delivery time for more 802s would have been longer than for the 397s. Also, they don't need the bi-mode capability.
